“Just like the Rose Garden, the virus won’t touch the powerful,” one State Department official said sarcastically, referencing the White House event that became a super-spreader. Pompeo himself will host holiday parties on December 15 and 16, an official confirmed. The Washington Post first reported on Pompeo’s plans to invite hundreds to holiday parties. The State Department did not answer questions about how guests could consume the government-provided food and cocktails while wearing masks. The White House will host as many as 20 receptions in the next few weeks before Christmas.

New U.S. coronavirus aid bill uncertain as Senate leaders joust

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/Pool/File PhotoWASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday said there was some positive movement in congressional efforts to reach a compromise on a new coronavirus aid bill but he gave no hints on when such a deal might be struck. “Now it’s been heartening to see a few hopeful signs in the past few days” toward a deal, McConnell, a Republican, said of Democrats’ stance on a new aid bill. Democrats had been seeking around $2.2 trillion while Republicans were offering around $500 billion. Pelosi and Schumer on Wednesday said that a $908 billion aid bill cobbled together by a group of Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate should be the basis of new negotiations.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bipartisan, $908 billion coronavirus aid plan gained momentum in the U.S. Congress on Thursday as conservative lawmakers expressed their support and Senate and House of Representatives leaders huddled. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which represents businesses across the United States, on Wednesday had warm words for the $908 billion bill. Senator Lindsey Graham added: “The $908 (billion) bill, that’s the one I support.”Earlier on Thursday, Trump said he thought negotiators were “getting very close” to a deal, but he did not elaborate. Congress is working on a $1.4 trillion funding bill to avert agency shutdowns in mid-December and leaders hope to attach a coronavirus aid bill to that must-do measure -- if only they can reach a deal. But this week, Pelosi and Schumer said the bipartisan, $908 billion aid bill should be the basis of new negotiations.

Dublin (Reuters) - Flutter Entertainment raised its bet on the U.S. gambling market on Thursday, with a $4.18 billion (3.12 billion pounds) deal to increase its FanDuel holding to 95% and end Fastball’s involvement in online sports betting platform FOX Bet. The deal also leaves the door open to further involvement by U.S.-based FOX Sports, owned by Fox Corporation, giving it the option to buy 18.5% of FanDuel in July next year. Flutter said it will raise 1.1 billion pounds ($1.48 billion) in equity to partly fund the purchase, with Fox Corporation participating in the capital raising. Jackson said Fox held 2.6% of Flutter Entertainment ahead of the placing. Flutter plans to pay for the stake through a combination of $2.09 billion in cash and the issue of about 11.7 million new ordinary shares directly to Fastball.

(Reuters) - European shares ended little changed on Thursday, as a surge in material stocks and Rolls-Royce helped counter downbeat business activity data from the region and Brexit trade deal uncertainty. REUTERS/StaffLondon’s FTSE 100 reversed losses to hit a six-month high, up 0.4%, with miners Rio Tinto, Glencore and Anglo American providing the biggest boosts on record iron ore prices and buoyant copper. Rolls-Royce surged 16% to top London’s blue-chip index, as well as the pan-European STOXX 600 benchmark after a report said it was considering a possible re-entry into the narrow-body jetliner market. Keeping sentiment in check was cautious comments on a post-Brexit trade deal between Britain and the European Union. The STOXX 600 has recovered about 45% from March lows, with November’s bumper rally lifting it from a downtrend, but it still remains close to 10% below its highs this year.

Instances of voter fraud with mail-in ballots are quite rare, with individual errors presenting a much bigger problem for local elections officials. While the news division has fact checked Trump's voter fraud theories, some opinion hosts are still holding out.

The pro-Trump media has constructed an alternative reality, and I’ve spent the last four years dropping into it. Many of the biggest outrages in the Trump media ecosystem during the last four years have been about cultural institutions. Liberal Hollywood is a favorite target, one that predates Mr. Trump. But Mr. Trump’s choice to declare insufficiently servile journalists “the enemy of the people” raised the stakes considerably. Mr. Trump’s cultural cachet was a crucial asset in his surprise run and win in 2016.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday that the UK had approved Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine too quickly. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease expert in the US, has said UK regulators were too quick to authorize Pfizer and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine. The US is yet to approve a COVID-19 vaccine, and the FDA will decide on Pfizer's shot December 10 at the earliest. In November, Fauci said a COVID-19 vaccine could be available to all Americans as soon as April. Unanswered questions about the Pfizer vaccine remain, including around its long-term safety.

Former Trump campaign attorney Sidney Powell told supporters at a Wednesday rally in Alpharetta, Georgia, to boycott state elections until she deems voting systems "secure." Georgia Republicans worry that attacks by Trump and his allies on the state's officials and voting systems will actually endanger their chances of winning the runoffs and retaining control of the Senate. The former Trump campaign attorney Sidney Powell urged supporters at a Wednesday rally to boycott elections until she deems voting systems "secure" — potentially damaging Republican chances of victory in key Senate runoff elections in January. Powell, with whom the Trump campaign parted ways earlier in November, has launched her own legal challenge to President-elect Joe Biden's victory in Georgia. At the "Stop The Steal" rally in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Wednesday, she said that Republicans and other voters should boycott elections until voting systems are made secure.

(Reuters) - U.S. health experts on Wednesday welcomed British emergency approval of Pfizer Inc’s COVID-19 vaccine, a sign that U.S. regulators may soon follow suit in a bid to bring the surging pandemic under control. An FDA panel of outside advisers will meet on Dec. 10 to discuss whether to recommend emergency use authorization of the Pfizer vaccine. Of particular interest is how Britain manages the Pfizer vaccine’s requirement to be stored at minus-70 degrees Celsius (-94 Fahrenheit). But the British experience is unlikely to factor into U.S. regulatory approval, which instead will focus on the clinical trial data. Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca Plc have already started manufacturing their vaccines and say distribution could begin almost immediately after approval.
