Vivian Maier was a disappearance artist. He has dedicated himself to promoting her legacy, and co-directed an Oscar-nominated documentary film, “Finding Vivian Maier” (2014). “Vivian Maier: Unseen Work,” at Fotografiska until Sept. 29, is the first New York museum show devoted to Maier and one of the largest exhibitions ever mounted of her photographs. Organized by Anne Morin, director of diChroma Photography, it was first seen in a different iteration at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris in 2021. CNN —Two decades ago, the photographer David LaChapelle staged apocalyptic scenes for the pages of “Vogue Italia” — images that proved so controversial that they nearly became his final editorial shoot. The Vogue Italia editorial was photographed before Hurricane Katrina, but published shortly after the natural disaster. “Some people thought that they (the photographs) were exploitive of Katrina,” LaChapelle said; among the glamorized ruins and designer shoes showcased, one image in particular featured models handing off sandbags. Now, though, “The House at the End of the World,” has become an important touchstone in LaChapelle’s portfolio. The end of the world will not be glamorous, but the urgency of his work has come to pass.

In an interview, Huxtable said that she was “excited to do this show,” but had some reservations. “It’s probably not ideal for artists that there’s a new, really expensive development being built in what was formerly a squat,” she said. campaign.”Jochen Sandig, a co-founder of the Tacheles squat who now runs two Berlin art spaces, said he had similar concerns about the project’s conflation of art and commerce. “Tacheles, the highest symbol of Berlin creativity, is now a shopping mall,” he said. “The ideals are ruined, save the ruins,” was the slogan of the occupying artists, who Sandig said engaged in a “social experiment” for “anyone to join if they were active.”
