LONDON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Aston Martin driver ambassador and former W Series racer Jessica Hawkins has become the first woman in nearly five years to test a Formula One car, the Silverstone-based team announced on Tuesday. She alternated in the car with Brazilian test and reserve Felipe Drugovich. She joined Aston Martin as a driver ambassador in 2021. Formula One has not had a woman driver start a grand prix since Italian Lella Lombardi in 1976 but a number have tested the machinery. The last female driver to test before Hawkins was Colombia's Tatiana Calderon with Sauber, now Alfa Romeo, at Mexico City's Hermanos Rodriguez track in October 2018.

Aug 15 (Reuters) - Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur has spoken about his friendship with Lewis Hamilton as Formula One waits for the seven-times world champion to sign a new contract with Mercedes. Hamilton won Formula Three and GP2 (now Formula Two) championships with Vasseur's ART team in 2005 and 2006 before making a spectacular Formula One debut with McLaren in 2007. Hamilton, 38, was linked to Ferrari in paddock speculation earlier this year but the Briton has been clear he wants to stay at Mercedes. Vasseur said Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz could do better, as could the team as a whole in a so-far underwhelming season. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who had been hoping for his third home pole in a row, had to settle for third while Verstappen's team mate and closest title rival Sergio Perez crashed and will start last. "I think that is one of the best laps he’s ever driven in qualifying," said Horner of his champion's 23rd career pole. Last year's winner Perez, 14 points behind Verstappen after five races, crashed at the Sainte Devote first corner in the opening session. The Mexican crashed in the final phase of qualifying last year but started third, and ahead of Verstappen. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll was only 14th on the grid and behind the Williams of Alex Albon in 13th.
