The annual Texas Republican Convention started Thursday in San Antonio, and culminated with George's election as party chair. Verizon , Comcast and Union Pacific sponsored the 2020 Texas Republican convention, according to The Texas Tribune. Pepsi and Chevron were sponsors of the 2022 Texas Republican convention, but they are not backing this year's event. The fight over corporate money also bubbled up in the election that George won on Friday, to lead the state party. This team "wears that as a badge of honor," he said, before the new chair of the state party was elected.

Former US President and Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump arrives for a "Commit to Caucus" rally in Clinton, Iowa, on January 6, 2024. Former President Donald Trump has secured enough delegates to seal the Republican presidential nomination, NBC News projects, setting up a 2024 rematch with President Joe Biden, who clinched the Democratic nomination earlier Tuesday night. Trump came into Tuesday's contests in Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi and Washington as the presumptive nominee after vanquishing all his primary opponents, while Biden faced little opposition in his primary. While Biden ran virtually unopposed on the Democratic side, Trump steamrolled through a Republican primary that included a handful of prominent politicians. He won all but two contests (Vermont and Washington, D.C.) through Tuesday and retained his grip on the Republican primary electorate in the process.

Trump's departure from the White House hasn't stopped him from using the old administration's star power to fuel Capitol Ministries' growth. The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

Doug Burgum, governor of North Dakota and 2024 Republican presidential candidate, speaks with members of the media in the spin room following the Republican primary presidential debate hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US, on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023. Doug Burgum ended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on Monday despite a stronger-than-expected showing fueled by a gift card-for-campaign donation gimmick that helped get him on the debate stage. The tactic drew skepticism over its legality, though Burgum's campaign said its legal advisers had reviewed and approved the method. On Friday, the board of OpenAI, the buzzy AI company behind viral chatbot ChatGPT, suddenly and publicly ousted its CEO Sam Altman. Conservative talk radio host Larry Elder announced Thursday that he was ending his 2024 Republican campaign for president and endorsing former President Donald Trump. Johnson also backed Trump on his way out of the race, while Hurd endorsed former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. Elder found little visibility in a primary race dominated by Trump and including other high-profile figures such as Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Gov. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican businessman Perry Johnson suspended his long-shot bid for president on Friday after failing to gain traction in the race. Johnson said the fact that he wasn't permitted to participate in the debates played a major role in his decision. Johnson spent money earlier this year to run an ad during the Super Bowl targeting voters in Iowa, the first state to vote on the GOP presidential field, touting his plan to cut federal spending by 2% every year. He announced his presidential bid in early March shortly after speaking at the opening day of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. Will Hurd of Texas on Monday suspended his presidential campaign, becoming the second notable GOP candidate to end his run for the Republican nomination. "Unfortunately, it has become clear to me and my team that the time has come to suspend our campaign," Hurd said in a statement announcing the suspension of his campaign. The former Texas congressman garnered some attention with his consistent criticism of former President Donald Trump, but he failed to qualify for both GOP debates so far. "It is important to recognize the realities of the political landscape and the need to consolidate our party around one person to defeat both Donald Trump" and President Joe Biden, Hurd said in his statement.

Another Republican presidential candidate has dropped out of the crowded 2024 field. He said the need to rally around one candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump had become increasingly clear. The GOP front-runner remains hugely popular in the Republican Party, despite making history as the first president to be impeached twice and inciting the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021. The Florida governor officially launched his 2024 presidential campaign on May 24 in a glitch-marred Twitter announcement, casting himself as Trump’s only legitimate Republican rival. The wealthy biotech entrepreneur and author of “Woke, Inc.” kicked off his presidential campaign on Feb. 21 with a video and op-ed.

Since the 2024 presidential race began, the second-place spot in GOP primary polling has been a coveted one.
