But while the unsigned, 13-page opinion the Supreme Court handed down Monday decisively resolved the uncertainty around Trump’s eligibility for a second term, it left unsettled questions that could some day boomerang back to the justices. A state court removed Griffin from office and New Mexico’s top court dismissed his appeal and Griffin appealed to the US Supreme Court. And it just makes the presidential transition – if Trump wins – more complicated, unpleasant and problematic than it needed to be.”What about other qualifications for candidacy? The seemingly preposterous hypotheticals came up repeatedly during the Trump ballot cases. But the Supreme Court hasn’t addressed the issue and didn’t offer clues on the point in Monday’s opinion.

The New Mexico secretary of state's office will accept signature petitions from candidates seeking a major party nomination for Congress or the U.S. Senate. Republicans also are choosing a contender to take on U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez in a congressional swing seat along the U.S. border with Mexico. Former one-term U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell hopes to reclaim the 2nd District seat she lost in the 2022 election. The district is one of about a dozen in the national spotlight as Republicans campaign to keep their slim U.S. House majority in 2024. The Republican Party unsuccessfully challenged a Democratic-drawn congressional map that reshaped the 2nd District as it divvied up a conservative, oil-producing region among three congressional districts.

As Nikki Haley has risen in polls, so has her viability among top political donors, per The Times. Some donors are describing Haley's candidacy as one that's creating enthusiasm among party leaders. GOP donor Eric Levine told The Times that Trump's air of inevitability has "peeled away completely." "His aura of invincibility is just peeled away completely," Levine said, pointing to Haley's polling surge among GOP voters.

CNN —Three former New Mexico State University basketball players have been charged with felony sex crimes and other offenses over allegations they were hazing teammates and student staff members – accusations that helped prematurely end the team’s 2022-23 season – the state attorney general said Thursday. The offenses are alleged to have happened from August to November 2022, grand jury indictments released by Torrez’s office say. Washington, a junior guard last season, and Bradley, then a sophomore forward, each face five counts of false imprisonment and criminal sexual contact. CNN has sought comment from the attorney general’s office and New Mexico State University. The Aggies resumed their men’s basketball program under a new coach, and the team played its first two games of the 2023-24 regular season this week.

But the case that may pose the greatest threat to Trump’s candidacy in 2024 is not one of his criminal cases. We are confident the rule of law will prevail, and this decision will be reversed — whether at the Colorado Supreme Court, or at the US Supreme Court,” a Trump campaign spokesperson said. But the Colorado case could be the one that makes it to our nation’s highest court. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment was intended to keep former Confederates from holding office after the war. The state’s Supreme Court rejected Griffin’s final appeal to overturn the decision earlier this year.

The first concern for those looking to leave Israel was when departing flights would resume, followed by the frustrations of actually booking the flight. Documents to travel with pets were not being processed to any country but the United States, she told CNN, but flight prices were skyrocketing into the thousands. “As we were boarding — because it was so manic — 10 or so people just went past the crew member,” they told CNN. Others looking to leave Israel detailed hearing misinformation about rocket strikes destroying the airport. It was days before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and the U.S. government was urging Americans to stay away from Russia. That’s when Bill Richardson boarded a plane to Moscow. The former New Mexico congressman, governor and cabinet member was pursuing his passion: freelance diplomacy with a dangerous foreign government. CNN —Two former New Mexico State University (NMSU) men’s basketball players filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against former head coach Greg Heiar, three former NMSU players, assistant head coach Dominique Taylor and the NMSU Board of Regents, citing alleged hazing and sexual assault incidents within the team. Benjamin and Odunewu say they reported the alleged incidents to the NMSU coaching staff but that no action was taken, according to the lawsuit. “This action is clearly needed, especially after receiving additional facts and reviewing investigation reports related to the hazing allegations involving student-athletes on the team,” New Mexico State University Chancellor Dan E. Arvizu said in a statement to CNN in February. At the time, New Mexico State University said it was hiring “another law firm to conduct another internal investigation” according to the lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, Benjamin and Odunewu will not be a part of the team next season.

The most serious charge prosecutors are pursuing — which carries five years in jail — would require them to show beyond a reasonable doubt that Baldwin was more than just negligent. In announcing her intent to charge Baldwin, Carmack-Altwies said it was his responsibility to personally ensure the gun was safe to handle and would not fire. They said that criminal charges are rare even in accidental shooting deaths that take place in non-professional settings without safety protocols. And civil suits against Baldwin that are pending have claimed systemic cost-cutting led to dangerous conditions on set, allegations Baldwin and the film's production company have denied. But prosecutors face a much higher burden in a criminal case and will likely need to demonstrate extraordinary safety lapses across the board, legal experts said.
They said that criminal charges are rare even in accidental shooting deaths that take place in non-professional settings without safety protocols. Host Alec Baldwin arrives at the 2nd Annual NFL Honors in New Orleans, Louisiana, February 2, 2013. Experts interviewed by Reuters could not cite another instance in which criminal charges stemmed from an accidental shooting death on a film set. And civil suits against Baldwin that are pending have claimed systemic cost-cutting led to dangerous conditions on set, allegations Baldwin and the film's production company have denied. Involuntary manslaughter charges are most common in fatal traffic accidents involving extreme recklessness, such as intoxication or excessive speeding, according to experts.
