President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday that he will nominate Doug Collins, a former House member from Georgia, to lead the Department of Veteran Affairs in his administration. Collins, an Iraq war veteran who left Congress in 2021, was a fierce defender of Trump during his 2019 impeachment inquiry. "Doug is a Veteran himself, who currently serves our Nation as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserve Command, and fought for our Country in the Iraq War," Trump said in a statement Thursday. Collins said he was honored to accept the nomination and vowed to deliver best-in-class care to veterans. Trump has expressed support for Collins in the past, having floated him as a potential challenger to Georgia Gov.

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, has said that he believes women should not serve in combat and that he wants to see the military purged of “woke” officials who support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. On the last day of a brutal, wild and tightly contested campaign, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris blitzed voters Monday with their final pleas for turnout. Harris and Trump both put their emphasis Monday on Pennsylvania, suggesting they still believe "Keystone State" is more than just a nickname. The latest appeared in Philadelphia’s Maja Park Wednesday morning, where someone positioned a roughly eight-foot statue of Donald Trump directly behind a sculpture of a nude woman. A California judge on Tuesday sentenced David DePape, the man who broke into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and attacked her husband with a hammer, to life behind bars without the possibility of parole. DePape had previously been sentenced to 30 years in prison for federal crimes connected to the Oct. 28, 2022, attack in the upscale Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said DePape is "now being held accountable" for acts that are a "danger to democracy." "Mr. DePape has been convicted of crimes both federally and locally reflecting the public's unanimous condemnation," Jenkins said in statement after Tuesday's sentencing. "Recognizing the seriousness of his crimes and the danger to democracy that Mr. DePape posed he is now being held accountable and will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole."
