It was the most times she had mentioned Trump at an event so far this year, according to a Biden campaign official. She also mentioned how abortion bans like the one going into effect in Florida on Wednesday threaten medical providers with criminal prosecution. “Donald Trump stripped away the rights and freedoms of women in America,” Biden said in Tampa. In remarks last month from Tucson, Arizona, she issued a blistering rebuke of the state’s Civil War-era ban while warning a second Trump term could see a possible federal abortion ban. “Part of a full-on attack, state by state, on reproductive freedom – and we all must understand who is to blame.

Campaign officials are fully aware the Trump trial could dominate news coverage in the weeks to come. Even some occasional critics of Biden’s campaign strategy have not found fault in his approach to the Trump trial. Their strategy of not campaigning, wasting money, acting like small time thugs, and pushing their extreme agenda is driving away voters,” Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer said in a statement Friday. On the trail during the trialIt is that viewpoint that has largely animated the president’s schedule as Trump’s first criminal trial gets underway. The trip followed swings through battleground Pennsylvania during the court’s jury selection and Virginia on the first day of Trump’s trial.

Glendale, California CNN —Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the “wildest ride in the wilderness,” sits at one edge of Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park, the most visited theme park in the world. “It’s probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom,” Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World site portfolio executive, said Tuesday during a rare media event previewing new Disney attraction designs and technology at its Walt Disney Imagineering facility in California. Disney’s 10-year investment planThe Magic Kingdom expansion is one part of a $60 billion investment Disney has said it’s planning for its parks, cruises and experiences over the next decade. But any plans for expanding the theme park footprint at the Disneyland resort would need Anaheim city approval because of zoning issues. The Florida Supreme Court issued a separate ruling on Monday that could energize Democrats’ efforts to hold Trump to account on abortion. The ex-president has long been wary of taking a definitive stand against abortion rights. But some Republicans are infringing the spirit of the Supreme Court ruling – which sent the issue back to individual states – by pushing for a national ban. And Democrats believe they have an issue, in abortion rights, that could thwart him – despite Biden’s own unpopularity. Democrats are delighted since they have had considerable success in using ballot initiatives to protect abortion rights or reject further restrictions.

Referendums protecting abortion access are on a winning streak nationwide, including in states far more red than Florida. Outside of Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 victories, Democrats have struggled to find success in Florida while Republicans are on a roll. The GOP now controls every statewide Cabinet office in Florida, its two US Senate seats and both state legislative chambers. In 2016, Trump won Florida despite a medical marijuana initiative on the ballot that Democrats hoped would aid their performance. “There is nothing more common than Democrats claiming they have some magical way to win Florida and they always come up short,” Power said.

Many Republicans plan to skip the House GOP retreat as they grumble about both the location and the idea of spending time with one another, with tensions still running high inside the party in the wake of their unprecedented speakership drama. Fewer than 100 Republicans have RSVP’d to attend the retreat, which is less than half of the entire conference, according to a GOP source familiar with the attendance sheet. GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, for example, is scheduled to appear on “Real Time with Bill Maher” later this week. In a remarkable split screen, firebrand GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida will be attending a rally in Texas on Thursday in support of Brandon Herrera, a far-right candidate who is challenging GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales. Among the Republicans who have decided to skip the retreat include Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee; Reps.

Democrats scored a big win in New York on Tuesday, and the numbers were extremely encouraging for the party. Across the country, Democrats are winning special elections and overperforming in elections they have predictably lost. And it's fueling optimism among Democrats looking at a challenging election year for both the White House and Congress. Last month, Democrats picked up a critical state House seat in Orlando, Florida – an important indicator of political mood in the I-4 corridor, home to many Hispanics. That doesn't necessarily translate into support for Biden, experts note, since the president often polls lower than Democrats running for lower office.

Watch CNN’s coverage of Senate GOP leadership and Donald Trump on ‘Inside Politics Sunday with Manu Raju’ at 11 a.m. Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell hasn’t spoken to Trump in more than three years and tries to avoid uttering his name in public. As Trump steamrolls to the nomination, there are ample questions in GOP circles about how – and whether – Trump can rebuild Senate alliances that were critical in his first term but are nonexistent now. But Mullin said that the next Senate GOP leader and Trump need to move past the bad blood if they take back the majority and the White House. Asked last week if he could work with Trump as president, Thune said: “We can work with everybody.”Pressed again if he could do so as GOP leader, Thune said: “Well, that’s a hypothetical.”And the elevator doors closed.

But Greene said she had a tougher time connecting with Speaker Mike Johnson, who doesn’t have a strong relationship with the congresswoman. “I haven’t heard much from him,” Greene told CNN earlier this week. Greene said Johnson heard her out and gave her assurances that her impeachment articles would move through committee and on to the floor. Taking a page from his predecessor’s playbook, Johnson has tried to dole out commitments and face-time to some of his potential critics. GOP Rep. Before the court action, Alabama – which is 27% Black – had only one Black-majority congressional district out of seven seats. The case is expected to land before the all-Republican state Supreme Court, where DeSantis appointees hold most seats. A separate federal case in Georgia challenges the congressional map on constitutional grounds and is slated to go to trial next month. UtahThe state Supreme Court, in a case it heard in July, is considering whether it even has the authority to weigh in on map-drawing decisions by the GOP-controlled state legislature. Advocacy groups and a handful of voters are challenging a congressional map that further carved up Democratic-leaning Salt Lake County between four decidedly Republican districts.

CNN —This summer’s record-breaking marine heat wave may have been the “nail in the coffin” for an iconic species of coral that serves as a building block of marine life around Florida. They were also the first coral species to gain protected status under the Endangered Species Act, Jennifer Moore, a threatened coral expert for NOAA told CNN. Staghorn coral may have faired slightly better than elkhorn this summer, Williamson said, but still faces similar long term challenges. Scientists fear this summer's ocean heat was the "nail in the coffin" for elkhorn and staghorn species. “We are definitely looking at a major mortality event, we just won’t know the extent of it for a couple more months,” Moore told CNN.

CNN —Top Senate Republicans look at the prospects of a Donald Trump primary victory with trepidation, fearful his polarizing style and heavy baggage may sink GOP candidates down the ticket as their party battles for control of the chamber. Daines argues that Trump is “strengthening” among independent voters and that could be a boon for his Senate candidates – even in purple states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Pennsylvania. “What’s key is we want to make sure we have high-quality candidates running with President Trump,” Daines said. Kyrsten Sinema nor Joe Manchin could hold onto their seats if they ran for reelection in their states as independents. And that’s a losing strategy.”Daines is also in the middle of another internal party war – between Trump and Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, as the two men have been at sharp odds since the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Who Really Gets Hurt During a Government Shutdown?

It’s a reality that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called “completely unfair,” as federal workers feel the brunt of lawmakers' inability to agree on a plan to fund the government. A shutdown occurs when Congress can’t pass legislation to fund the government before the start of the fiscal year. The Office of Management and Budget directs each federal agency to create a shutdown contingency plan reviewable on its website that identifies essential workers and services. Government shutdowns have become familiar to many federal workers, with the last shutdown ending in 2019. Other federal employees may hold jobs that are considered essential and may be required to work without pay during a shutdown.

CNN —House Democrats have begun internal discussions about how to deal with the prospects of a chaotic situation: The possibility that Speaker Kevin McCarthy could lose his job in an unprecedented vote on the floor. One of the strategies being discussed by Democrats is to vote “present” or vote to kill it all together if a motion to oust McCarthy is brought to the floor. Bacon warned that he would cut a deal with Democrats if they reach an impasse with conservative hardliners. Democrats considering bailing out McCarthy say it wouldn’t necessarily stop there. If McCarthy were challenged, it may only take a handful of Democrats to save him.

CNN —Florida is bracing for “major impact” as Tropical Storm Idalia is expected to rapidly strengthen into a powerful Category 3 hurricane and aim for its Gulf Coast, threatening dangerous storm surge and winds, authorities said. “Idalia could become a hurricane later this morning, and is forecast to become a major hurricane by early Wednesday,” the National Hurricane Center said. The Florida National Guard activated: More than 5,000 National Guard members were activated to help respond to the storm. Idalia posed a “notable risk” of this phenomenon, the National Hurricane Center warned Monday, as it travels through the Gulf of Mexico. Cedar Key could be cut off by the high storm surge, National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome said.

Almost as soon as Trump left Atlanta after surrendering at the Fulton County jail Thursday, his team began to monetize his mug shot. Meadows to provide first major test of Georgia caseThe hearing in Georgia that could yield major revelations does not involve Trump directly, but rather Meadows. Meadows and Trump are among 19 co-defendants in a vast racketeering case built by Willis. Extensive pre-trial litigation in the Georgia case could also end up frustrating attempts by Willis, who initially sought a March 2024 trial date, to bring the case before the 2024 election. Trump had to agree, for example, to make no threats on social media against co-defendants, witnesses and the 30 unindicted co-conspirators. The former president has excoriated special counsel Jack Smith, who indicted him twice, on social media and in speeches. Elliot Williams, a former federal prosecutor and CNN legal analyst, said that the terms were fair and did not infringe on Trump’s rights. Trump’s many late-night social media eruptions will make it hard for observers to believe that he will stick to the conditions to which he’s agreed. By Monday evening, Trump had already posted on his social media network about the bond.

The summer Andrea first crossed paths with Lewis Kelly. He seemed aloof, “a loner,” as Andrea thought back then. When Andrea didn’t hear from him, she assumed he’d forgotten about her. “We’re so cute.”Then, as the date of his arrival got ever closer, Andrea started doubting herself. “I just want to make it work and be with you.”At this, Andrea started crying.

Why Biden worries about a third-party rival in 2024

This would normally be the part of the story where I’d tell you that a third-party candidate has little chance of winning next year – and I am telling you that. It’s also true, however, that 2024 is shaping up to be the kind of election Biden could lose primarily because of a third-party candidacy. This year it’s pretty clear that such a portion of third-party voters probably already exists for a simple reason: Biden and Trump are historically unpopular. The headlines and the fears Democrats have about a third-party candidate are, at least partially, a tacit acknowledgement that Biden is unpopular. So why aren’t we hearing Republicans worry about a third-party candidate?

CNN —A jury has acquitted on all counts the former school resource officer who stayed outside during the February 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida – absolving him of wrongdoing in the rare trial of a law enforcement officer for his response to a mass shooting. His attorney argued the then-Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy didn’t enter the building under attack because he couldn’t tell where the shots were coming from. And even if Peterson had known where the shooter was, speculation he could have made a difference is false, Eiglarsh argued. Eiglarsh emphasized Peterson was at the scene for the last 4 minutes and 15 seconds of the shooting, which lasted about 6 1/2 minutes. Peterson also arrived at the scene without a bulletproof vest or rifle and called for measures to lock down the school, the attorney told jurors.

Shevrin Jones, a Florida state senator and member of the Biden campaign’s advisory board of elected officials, said he’s eager to tell the country the story of what he’s seen under DeSantis’ leadership. Biden and DeSantis and their wives walk to meet with local residents affected by Hurricane Ian in Fort Myers, Florida, on October 5, 2022. The voter registration advantage Florida Democrats had when President Barack Obama narrowly won the state in 2012 has flipped to Republicans. An adviser to the former New York City mayor told CNN that so far, there has been no outreach to Bloomberg’s operation from either the Biden campaign or the DNC. There was also a fleeting belief that they could push Biden over the top in Florida – though Trump ended up carrying the state by 3 points.
