Drone footage shows the devastating aftermath of the partially collapsed Miami Beach condo building that seemingly flattened out of nowhere early Thursday. Drone video shows an aerial view of Champlain Towers South, a once L-shaped building, which lost its entire northeast-facing corridor — nearly half the building — in seconds around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, when many were asleep. The video shows a compact pile of rubble where the 12 floors used to be and the remains of dozens of condo units exposed to the open air. "We are working around the clock to search and rescue people in this rubble," Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Thursday. The Godfather of Critical Race Theory
  + stars: | 2021-06-25 | by ( Adam Kirsch | ) www.wsj.com + 0.00   time to read: +2 min
Today, critical race theory is undergoing that kind of transformation. But over the last year, critical race theory has moved to the center of American political debate. In September 2020, the Trump administration issued a memo instructing executive branch departments to cancel “any training on ‘critical race theory,’” which it equated with teaching “that the United States is an inherently racist or evil country.” This year, legislators and school boards in many states have introduced proposals to prohibit the teaching of critical race theory in schools, with Florida’s State Board of Education adopting such a rule earlier this month. Far more Americans have learned about critical race theory from its opponents than from the theorists themselves. But at least one major work is more accessible: “Faces at the Bottom of the Well,” the 1992 book by Derrick Bell, who is often described as the founder or godfather of critical race theory.

Mike Pence said Thursday he was "proud" to do his Constitutional duty and certify the election. "There is almost no idea more un-American than the idea that one person could choose the president," Pence said. Some members of the mob believed the vice president could stop the certification, as Trump had claimed, and were chanting "Hang Mike Pence." "But the Constitution provides the vice president with no such authority before the joint session of Congress." Some Trump supporters still hold Pence accountable for certifying the election for President Joe Biden.

WASHINGTON — A federal judge in Florida halted the Biden administration’s new debt relief program for minority farmers on Wednesday. Howard ordered the Agriculture Department not to issue payments under the program for "socially disadvantaged" farmers until she can rule on the merits of the case. She wrote that the program, which is embedded in President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan law, is "significantly likely" to violate the constitutional rights of the plaintiff, a white farmer named Scott Wynn. Several white farmers have filed suit in cases across the country, at least one of which is backed by America First Legal, a group founded by former Trump White House aides. Howard implored the plaintiffs' lawyers and the Justice Department to move swiftly so that a more permanent ruling can be made quickly.

Private capital has remained on the sidelines eager to invest. Let’s start with the basics: Infrastructure is a terrific, necessary investment, and the private sector has the capital to pay for it. The original toll roads, meanwhile, saw safety improve, congestion decrease and toll rates fall thanks to private sector investment. It can allow states to commission projects worth many times the public investment, as has already happened in Virginia, Maryland and Florida. Too often, the answer is “someone else.” This compromise proposal has sent the bill to private capital, the “someones” volunteering to pay.

While the goods trade deficit widened last month, that was because of an increase in imports as businesses desperately try to keep up with robust demand. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 7,000 to a seasonally adjusted 411,000 for the week ended June 19, the Labor Department said. STRONG GROWTHFederal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell told lawmakers on Tuesday that he believed the economy would see strong job creation in the fall. Strong demand and tight supply are forcing businesses to turn to imports, boosting the trade deficit. In a third report, the Commerce Department said the goods trade deficit increased 2.8% to $88.1 billion in May.
