Biden wants Congress to allow $400 billion for home care to help cut the wait, which can last years. Under Biden's plan, Congress would increase home-care funding by $400 billion over eight years to help more people get care. Biden's $400 billion plan wouldn't address all the problems with home care but would make a significant difference for many families who need it, proponents say. The $300 billion home-care industry doesn't have a large market leader lobbying the issue as might typically be seen with other healthcare interests. Casey also said he wasn't sure that all Democrats were willing to vote for the full $400 billion Biden is asking for.

Novavax said its coronavirus vaccine was 90% effective at preventing COVID-19. The biotech company Novavax said on Monday that its coronavirus vaccine succeeded in a final-stage clinical trial, demonstrating 90% efficacy at preventing COVID-19. It remains to be seen how the Novavax vaccine will be used in the US immunization campaign. Among the most vulnerable population — including older people and those with frequent exposure to the virus — Novavax's vaccine was 91% effective. Despite the uncertainty surrounding its use in the US, Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine program has been a remarkable and unlikely success story.

Cruise Lines Wrestle With Florida Ban on Vaccine Passports

Ron DeSantis and the cruise industry over whether to require passengers to show proof of Covid-19 vaccines is coming to a head as some cruise lines prepare to relaunch ships from their top ports in the state this summer. But Florida, as well as Texas and Alabama, which also have cruise ports, passed laws barring businesses from requiring “vaccine passports,” or proof of vaccination. Florida filed a lawsuit in April challenging the federal government’s restrictions on the cruise industry. The states’ measures have put cruise companies in a bind, analysts say, and the companies have responded with a mixture of policies. Royal Caribbean International, owned by the same parent company, is strongly encouraging, but not requiring, vaccinations for passengers on voyages departing from Florida ports, he said.

Peruvian socialist Pedro Castillo overtook right-wing rival Keiko Fujimori in the country's presidential election vote count on Monday, taking the lead in the official tally on the back of a late surge of rural votes. The official count from Sunday's election showed outsider candidate Castillo with 50.1% and Fujimori on 49.9%, with over 94% of the vote counted. The leftist candidate had trailed in early counting, but taken as much as 75% of some newly counted vote updates to steadily haul himself clear. The slower-to-count rural vote has helped Castillo's late charge, though uncounted overseas ballots could still boost Fujimori. Texas GOP’s new voting restrictions on verge of approval

But the bill must still clear a final vote in the Texas House later Sunday in order to reach Republican Gov. Texas is the last big battleground in the GOP's nationwide efforts to tighten voting laws, driven by former President Donald Trump's false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Georgia and Florida have also passed new voting restrictions, and President Joe Biden on Saturday unfavorably compared Texas' bill to election changes in those states as "an assault on democracy." Governor Brian Kemp's Twitter feed | Handout via ReutersThe vote in the Texas Senate came just a short time after a final version of the bill had been made public Saturday. Election officials would also face new criminal penalties, including felony charges for sending mail voting applications to people who did not request one.

Live Live Updates: House to Vote on Creating a Commission to Investigate the Capitol Riot The vote is expected to be largely partisan after the Republicans’ leader, Representative Kevin McCarthy, and his team urged his members to vote no. The House is set to vote to create an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Mr. McCarthy’s opposition to the bill on Tuesday was followed by a statement from his leadership team encouraging a “no” vote. In rejecting the commission, Mr. McCarthy essentially threw one of his key deputies, Representative John Katko of New York, under the bus in favor of shielding Mr. Trump and the party from further scrutiny. “Enough said.” Mr. Katko predicted a “healthy” number of Republicans would still vote for it.

With roots in more than 20 countries, Asian Americans make up one of the most diverse groups in the United States. Yet, pop culture depictions sometimes fail to reflect the depth of the Asian American experience, often neglecting smaller communities and ethnicities within the diaspora to focus instead on larger, more established populations. This Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we talked to acclaimed Asian American authors Christina Soontornvat and Sheba Karim about the often overlooked parts of Asian America, what they are reading right now and the importance of being seen in the books we read. “I didn’t see books that were set in Asian worlds — there were no characters of color even,” she recalled. McCarthy Announces Opposition to Jan. 6 Commission The top House Republican said he could not support an inquiry into the attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob because it would not examine unrelated “political violence” associated with the left. Representative Rashida Tlaib urged President Biden to end his support of Israel amid its bombing campaign against Hamas. In rejecting the commission, Mr. McCarthy essentially threw one of his key deputies, Representative John Katko of New York, under the bus in favor of shielding Mr. Trump and the party from further scrutiny. Ms. Cheney has said the commission should have a narrow scope, and that Mr. McCarthy should testify about a phone call with Mr. Trump during the riot. Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is undergoing a probe carried by the Congress on mismanagement of the pandemic. South America's largest country, previously renowned for demonstrating leadership during health crises, has become an international pariah amid the coronavirus pandemic. Brazil has recorded the highest coronavirus-related death toll in the world outside the U.S., is lagging in terms of vaccinations and is still without an effective and coordinated public health response to the outbreak. Flores told CNBC that all available public health measures should be stepped up "as soon as possible" and the country's vaccination campaign needs to be accelerated. He added that an effective testing and tracing system along with coherent guidance on public health restrictions must also be implemented.
