WASHINGTON — Attorney General Merrick Garland is coming under increasingly intense criticism from progressives who say he is protecting former President Donald Trump. But it's not Trump who stands to be the primary beneficiary of Garland's shield; it's President Joe Biden. They noted that Jackson had slammed the Trump-era Justice Department for misleading the court about the contents of the memo. Similarly, Garland's Justice Department is trying to protect former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos from having to testify in a student loan case. And on Friday, Garland announced DOJ would double the number of staff dedicated to protecting voting rights within the department's Civil Division.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - When Brian Moynihan took the reins at Bank of America Corp in 2010, the U.S. bank was reeling. Since then, Moynihan, 61, has not just righted the ship, but transformed Bank of America, leaving analysts, industry people and some investors wondering what - and who - comes next. That leaves Moynihan with a new challenge over the next few years: determining who would best replace him, and marketing that person to the world without alienating other senior executives. Yet it leaves Moynihan as the longest-tenured CEO on Wall Street who has not offered a crisp idea of who is next, analysts said. “Now that he has four or five years of runway left, investors should be rightfully saying, ‘Hmmm,’” said one former bank employee.

When the pandemic hit, the remodeling market crashed before bouncing back stronger than it was pre-pandemic. The surge isn't just a newfound pandemic hobby or some post-pandemic repair, but a natural evolution of a very heated housing market. As Will explained, many are often more concerned with the down payment and acquiring the property as opposed to investing in home improvement projects. It's the latest way millennials are getting screwed in the housing market. When it comes to the housing market, millennials are hitting every branch on the way down.

I hope that part of the pandemic's legacy will be greater awareness about mental health and more open dialogue, particularly in business. To keep myself in a good place and improve my mental health, I took certain hobbies and made them rituals: morning walks with my dog, meditation, yoga and exercise. Every Sunday, I go for a walk with a friend with the sole purpose of discussing our mental health to prepare for the week ahead. Openly discuss mental health with your teamThe more I told people I was struggling with my mental health early on in the pandemic, the more support I received. A staggering 72% of entrepreneurs are directly or indirectly affected by mental health issues, compared to 48% of non-entrepreneurs.

In a brief statement late on Tuesday, James’ office said the investigation into the Trump Organization was now considered a criminal matter and officials with Trump’s company were informed. She would now work closely with Vance, who has led a criminal probe into the company and its officers since 2018. Two assistant attorneys general from James’ office are joining Vance’s team to work on the criminal investigation, according to a source familiar with the inquiry. Several congressional committees also are probing Trump’s financial affairs. Her ex-husband, Weisselberg’s son Barry, is a Trump Organization employee.

Why Cash Is Better Than Expanded Health Insurance for the Poor

In other words, from the recipient’s perspective the alternatives are $5,500 in cash or only about 40 percent of that — $2,200 — in health insurance benefits, on top of the care they were already receiving. Hospitals are major beneficiaries of health insurance expansions, which reduce their financial burdens and increase their profit margins. Health insurance has always been an important financial tool for hospitals. During the Great Depression, they pioneered the first widespread health insurance in the United States to help ensure payment for provided care. Of course, the newly insured have also benefited greatly from health insurance expansions.

Buying old homes and renovating them has made homeownership more attainable for the generation. As prices for homes reach record-highs, millennials are turning to fixer-uppers as a more affordable solution. More than three-quarters (82%) said in Bank of America Research's sixth annual millennial home improvement survey that they're more likely to buy a fixer-upper than a newly built home. It's the latest takeaway from a historic housing shortage that's forcing millennials into their second housing crisis in 12 years. Half (52%) of millennials started their home improvement projects within six months of their purchase, per the BofA survey.

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein said that the company does not consider Amazon a competitor. 2020 was a standout year for Shopify, the e-commerce company known for its tools that empower other businesses to build online stores. Finkelstein said that if Shopify were an online retailer, it would be the second-largest online retailer in the US, behind Amazon. But, Shopify doesn't consider itself an online retailer — or a direct competitor of Amazon. He thinks that it's possible for both types of e-commerce models to coexist, as they serve different purposes.

Now he says it “gives me shivers” to be called a Republican. He hopes to show that there is still a way to beat back the lies and false beliefs that have spread from the fringe to the mainstream. Mr. Riggleman summarized his conversations with the 70 percent of House Republicans he said were privately appalled at the former president’s conduct but wouldn’t dare speak out. It’s that simple.”Stocky, fast-talking and inexhaustibly curious, the former congressman is now working for a group of prominent experts and academics at the Network Contagion Research Institute, which studies the spread of disinformation in American politics and how to thwart it. Getting lawmakers to see radical movements like QAnon as a threat has been difficult.

If those inquiries suspend Crown’s gambling licence, as the Sydney regulator did, the company’s main revenue would stop. “The Crown companies do not accept, in terms, the findings made,” Finkelstein added. On Feb. 11, Crown Chair Helen Coonan said in a statement in relation to the Sydney inquiry that “I accept criticism is warranted and reiterate our unreserved apologies for these shortcomings”. The New South Wales Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority, which commissioned the Sydney inquiry and has suspended Crown’s licence, was not immediately available for comment. This week, Crown said it received a $6.2 billion buyout proposal from private equity giant Blackstone Group Inc. Crown, which lost about half its board in the past month following the Sydney inquiry, is yet to say if it supports a takeover.

Why It’s So Hard to Cut Waste in Health Care

Medicaid increased preventive care, which was intended, but also increased emergency room visits, which was not. Similarly, financial incentives that encourage physicians and hospitals to refrain from superfluous treatments may also jettison some indispensable care. Or a network of health care providers might be paid $10,000 a year for all of a patient’s health care needs. A recent study of health care in 10 countries — including several with single-payer systems — concluded that, to one degree or another, they all are rife with inefficient and unnecessary care. One reason it is so hard to trim waste is that physicians and regulators have already eliminated so many demonstrably harmful or useless treatments.

Its founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has steered the company from infancy to global supremacy with a personal slogan of "step ferociously." After he predicted that ecommerce was about to take off, Bezos founded Amazon as an online book retailer in 1994. According to the man himself, the value that "surprises people" is Amazon's fourth leadership principle: "are right, a lot." "No PowerPoints are used inside of Amazon," Bezos has said. Bezos still runs elements of Amazon like a startup, such as being notoriously frugal when it comes to company expenses.

Cyber Monday just became the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history, with consumers spending $10.8 billion online, according to Adobe Analytics. Consumers saw the biggest discounts on computers, sporting goods, toys, appliances, and electronics, Adobe said. “But here's the thing, your items might not exist — and if you're shopping online, you might run into shipping issues.”Like the discounts, the record-breaking sales seen on Cyber Monday aren’t specific to one day. Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday also did well, totaling $5.1 billion, $9 billion and $4.7 billion respectively, according to Adobe. Small-business hub Etsy saw an 84 percent increase in sales during the first eight hours of Cyber Monday alone, according to Edison Trends.

Just last week Trump summoned Michigan Republican leaders to the White House to try to throw out the state's election results. The most egregious example is Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, the subject of an ethics complaint we filed, along with former Office of Government Ethics Director Walter Shaub, last Wednesday with the Senate Ethics Committee. Senate ethics rules prohibit Senate employees from engaging in campaign activity, unless it is clear that they do so on their own time, outside of Senate space, and without using Senate resources. Can Shopify Compete With Amazon Without Becoming Amazon?
  + stars: | 2020-11-24 | by ( Yiren Lu | ) www.nytimes.com + 0.00   time to read: +6 min
Part of what enables Amazon to offer two-day delivery, after all, is that everything is shipped in the same kinds of packaging by Amazon employees trained from the same manual. For most of the mid-to-late 2010s, the playbook for a direct-to-consumer brand was straightforward: a Shopify site and Facebook ads. Let’s say you spend $15 to manufacture a sweater, pay another $15 to market it through Facebook ads, then sell it for $80 on your Shopify store and pocket $50. The problem was that Facebook, like Amazon, is a landlord who knows how to squeeze blood out of a stone. Brooklinen, for instance, a well-funded direct-to-consumer sheets company that runs on Shopify (and has blanketed the New York subway system with ads), began selling on Amazon as well two years ago.

Few companies were as well-positioned for a global pandemic as Shopify. Founded in 2006 to help physical retailers establish a web presence, Shopify offers easy-to-deploy cloud software so small businesses don't have to do the heavy lifting of going digital. That puts it about even with Zoom and behind only Salesforce among pure cloud software companies and Microsoft and Adobe, if you include legacy vendors that have transitioned to the cloud. Now Shopify is gearing up for its busiest season of the year, or what Harley Finkelstein, the company's president, calls "our Super Bowl." Finkelstein sat down with CNBC via video chat last week to talk about the wild year for the company and what Shopify expects over the holidays.
