CNN —The United States has proposed new language to bridge gaps in discussions for a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, a senior US administration official said Friday. But dashing hopes for a breakthrough, earlier this month Hamas responded to the Israeli proposal with further amendments. The US is pushing Egypt and Qatar to press Hamas to accept the change in language, according to Ravid. Jack Guez/AFP/Getty ImagesThe second phase of the proposal has been a source of disagreement in the months-long negotiation between Israel and Hamas. The total number of Palestinians killed in Gaza since Oct. 7 is now 37,834, while the number of injuries has risen to 86,858.

President Biden on Friday delivered one of the most forceful performances of his campaign, acknowledging that he doesn’t “debate as well as I used to” but firing up a crowd of thousands of supporters by furiously accusing former President Donald J. Trump of being a “one-man crime wave.”Speaking to a large and boisterous crowd, Mr. Biden, 81, tried to beat back a chorus of doubters that emerged following a devastating debate against Mr. Trump the night before, when he appeared disjointed and unclear. On Friday, he was once again the fierce and loud-spoken campaigner that many had doubted still existed. He directly confronted questions about his age, saying that “I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious.”But he sought to minimize concerns about his own fitness for office, saying he would never run for re-election if he didn’t think he was up to the job. And he repeatedly sought to cast the election as a choice between right and wrong, morality and criminality, an honest man and a convicted criminal.

A group of some of the most powerful social conservatives in the country, fearful that Donald J. Trump may push to water down the Republican Party’s official position on abortion, sent a pointed letter to the former president this month imploring him to keep strong anti-abortion language in the party platform. The letter, which has not previously been reported but was reviewed by The New York Times, is the latest sign of the fierce behind-the-scenes lobbying underway over the language that will officially outline the party’s principles. The Republican platform has not been updated in eight years and is especially outdated on the topic of abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. The letter urges Mr. Trump to “make clear that you do not intend to weaken the pro-life plank.” Specifically, it asks him to commit to keeping language in the platform that the party supports a “human life amendment to the Constitution” and legislation to “make clear that the 14th Amendment’s protections apply to children before birth.”It was co-signed by 10 anti-abortion leaders, including Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, Ralph Reed of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and Penny Nance of Concerned Women for America. Ms. Dannenfelser delivered the letter via email to Mr. Trump’s top adviser, Susie Wiles, on June 10, as the party prepares to hold its national convention in Milwaukee starting July 15.

For much of my childhood in the Berkshires region of western Massachusetts, I didn’t give a hoot about the Housatonic River. Notions of Edenic riverbanks came from my mom reading “The Wind in the Willows” out loud after dinner — not from encounters with the actual river that flowed 330 yards from our front door. An arched bridge over it, which I crossed on my walk to high school, marked the transition from home to the stresses of my teenage years. I learned, too, that reaches of the river acclaimed by Melville, Ives and Longfellow were laden with PCBs, an industrial pollutant. Tourists, taking their cue from locals, have only rarely ventured down to the Housatonic’s banks.

The charges stemmed from allegations by Duterte that De Lima had received payoffs from convicted drug gangs to fund her 2016 senatorial bid. Speaking to reporters outside the court, De Lima said Duterte would be held responsible for “sins committed” against Filipinos. Jam Sta Rosa/AFP/Getty ImagesDuring his tenure as president, Duterte repeatedly said the killings of drug suspects are lawful if police are acting in self defense. In July last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) rejected an appeal by the Philippine government to block an investigation by prosecutors into Duterte’s drug war. The Philippines was formerly a signatory to the ICC but Duterte canceled the country’s membership after the court began probing his drug war.

Fundstrat's Tom Lee, who's been correctly nailing the stock market for the past few years, hinted that he was about to hike his year-end S & P 500 target even with the benchmark at record highs. Lee's 5,800 call would represent another 6% gain for the S & P 500 from current levels. Lee believes a strong force that could help lift the market is the $6 trillion in cash that's in money market funds. Lee would join a host of others on Wall Street who have recently raised their S & P 500 targets. On June 14, Goldman Sachs increased its price target on the S & P to 5,600.

BEIJING — China's ByteDance is working with U.S. chip designer Broadcom on developing an advanced AI processor, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, a move that would help TikTok's owner secure sufficient supply of high-end chips amid U.S.-Sino tensions. Securing AI chips is crucial for ByteDance to make its algorithms more powerful. To support its AI push, ByteDance has stockpiled Nvidia chips, according to a separate person who was briefed on the matter. Bytedance currently has hundreds of semiconductor-related job openings posted, including 15 for ASIC chip designers, according to checks of its website. It has also been poaching top people from other Chinese AI chip firms, according to one of the sources who has direct knowledge of this issue.

CNN —Only a fraction of the violence that raged across Dagestan on Sunday is visible at the moment, and it is already horrific. But it is particularly bad in Dagestan, where protests broke out in the earlier months of the war, as their sons had been disproportionately mobilized. Putin came to power in 1999 graphically pledging to wipe out “in the toilet” the extremists apparently behind apartment bombings in Moscow. But it is still the same problem Putin faced when he sneaked into Beslan in 2004. A raging sore for the Kremlin, and a reminder of both how Putin came to power and his limits on it.

EU and China set for talks on planned electric vehicle tariffs
  + stars: | 2024-06-23 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The EU and China have reportedly agreed to start talks on the planned imposition of tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck said he had been informed by EU commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis that there would be concrete negotiations on tariffs with China. The minister had said earlier on Saturday that the European Union's door was open for discussions regarding EU tariffs on Chinese exports. Proposed EU tariffs on Chinese goods are not a "punishment", Habeck told Chinese officials earlier in Beijing. Proposed EU duties on Chinese-made EVs would hurt both sides, Zheng added.

AdvertisementHowever, Nvidia's run faces one big risk: it depends on the generative AI boom lasting. Though tech giants, including Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, now appear to have made generative AI their priority, there appears to be awareness of the technology's weaknesses. Google, for instance, was forced to apologize earlier this year after its generative AI image generator created historically incorrect images in response to user requests. For now, though, the industry seems intent on moving ahead with LLM-enabled generative AI. That should keep Nvidia in the race with Microsoft and Apple to a $4 trillion valuation.

Future Publishing | Future Publishing | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China spent $230.8 billion over more than a decade to develop its electric car industry, according to analysis published Thursday by the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. Last month, the U.S. announced it was raising duties on imports of Chinese electric vehicles to 100%. There are some exceptions, but in general Western automakers and governments have dilly dallied and not been aggressive enough. But he also noted that the U.S. has not created conditions that are as attractive as China's for developing its own electric car industry. But these multigenerational brand names are now trailing behind Nvidia, suddenly the most-valuable public company in the world. With a market value of over $3 trillion, Nvidia is worth more than most countries’ entire economies. All that demand for Nvidia chips surely must’ve increased competition, right? All that means is demand for Nvidia chips isn’t going away any time soon but that competition will continue to grow more fierce. Before we know it, another company with a name most people can’t pronounce will be referred to as the next Nvidia.
