While public auction sales are declining in the art world, private sales — done behind closed doors between discreet buyers and sellers — are growing. Classic cars are also seeing a shift to private sales, especially with the most expensive and rare models. But its newly formed RM Sotheby's private sales division has seen its sales more than quadruple over the past four years, according to Shelby Myers, global head of private sales for RM Sotheby's. The rise in private sales for classic cars, art, real estate and other markets is being driven by social media, technology and cooling prices for collectibles. "They're leaving money on the table," said real estate broker Noble Black of Douglas Elliman.

Roberto Cavalli, a Life Out Loud

His animal prints did not always originate from nature but from his own imagination, chimeras of exotic skins that telegraphed excess, sex and aspiration. If Gianni Versace was the id of Italian fashion, Mr. Cavalli made it roar, hitting mass saturation in the late nineties as an antidote to the minimalism of Jil Sander and Helmut Lang. He stepped into the vacuum created by the murder of Mr. Versace in 1997, was further buoyed by the frothy stock market, and soon, Paris Hilton was wearing him. So was Candace Bushnell, creator of “Sex and the City.” Victoria Beckham was a fan during her Posh Spice era. Little wonder he was the main sponsor of the 2004 show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute: “Wild: Fashion Untamed” — or that Ben Stiller wore Mr. Cavalli’s designs for “Zoolander,” Mr. Stiller’s fashion satire.

CNN —Just four races into the Formula One season, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes the title is Max Verstappen’s to lose after another dominant win for the Red Bull driver. At the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, three-time world champion Verstappen finished 13 seconds ahead of teammate Sergio Pérez, who was eight seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in third. Last month, Sainz won the Australian Grand Prix when Verstappen was forced to retire from the race. Farrer is better known as the Timepiece Gentleman, the flashiest online dealer in the $75 billion luxury watch trade. All he needed was the right name for his luxury watch business — something distinctive, something memorable. In his mind, he pictured what the ultimate luxury watch dealer would look like. To launch his career as the Timepiece Gentleman, Farrer boned up on the jargon of horology, from escape wheels and spring barrels to flinques and guilloches. Despite the staggering size of the luxury watch trade, nobody had thought to market its glamour and mystique.

Lamborghini sold more than 10,000 vehicles last year for the first time ever and Ferrari had a more than 17% increase in revenue. But customers purchasing Lamborghinis, Rolls-Royces and Bentleys have an even wider array of infinitely customizable paint colors and interior materials, to start with, than carmakers offer for less expensive brands. If the customer has a favorite shirt, for example, the car paint could be matched to the fabric color. At Dixon’s Rolls-Royce dealership three quarters of the roughly 90 cars sold each year include some degree of custom options, she said. While she and Rolls-Royce’s design team can provide guidance, in the end, the choices have to be the customer’s.

AdvertisementIn the past, I've argued that Apple products have become boring because Apple seems to have lost its way with useful product innovation. But the truth is, there's a very good reason why Apple doesn't do drastic changes to its products: slow, steady and reliable products are keeping Apple on top. To be fair, under CEO Tim Cook, Apple has had several big hit new products: Apple Watch and Air Pods, come to mind. While Air Pods will work with others, they are really designed to work best with Apple products. But ultimately, even if you find Apple products boring rather than classic, they are a great choice for those looking for long-lasting, high-quality, user-friendly, reliable technology.

There's more enforcement to come, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act infused billions of dollars into the previously perpetually underfunded and paper-laden IRS. "Inflation Reduction Act funding gives us the ability to take swift and aggressive action to improve compliance and close the tax gap." Since the passage of the IRA, the IRS has closed several cases of high-earning taxpayers getting creative with their business expenses and deductions. The IRS is specifically taking aim at Americans who earn over $1 million, and have over $250,000 in tax debt.

A new study from Morgan Stanely makes the case that generative AI will enable people to work multiple jobs, writes Insider's Alistair Barr. In the US alone, multi-earning has increased 11% over the past year, largely thanks to the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT. New research from EY found that nearly 40% of Gen Zers had a side hustle to earn extra money. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact bosses don't seem to care if their employees are working multiple jobs, albeit with one caveat. To be sure, executives' acceptance of employees working multiple jobs might be short-lived.

A Tesla Model S drag raced a Bugatti Chiron. The Bugatti won, but the races were surprisingly close given the cost difference between the cars. The channel pitted the sportiest Tesla you can buy — a four-door Model S Plaid with the optional Track Package — against the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport, a multimillion-dollar supercar from a brand synonymous with world-beating performance. But the results were closer than you might expect — especially given that the Model S will run you only a little over $100,000. I say "only" because the Chiron Super Sport would have cost at least $4 million when new.

'Smooth operator' Sainz ends Red Bull's winning streak

"We nailed the race," said Sainz after his second career win for the Italian team and first since Silverstone last year. The Spaniard eked out his hard tyres for 42 laps, winning at the slowest possible speed, for Ferrari's first victory since Charles Leclerc triumphed in Austria in July last year. No team has ever won every race in a season of more than 10 rounds but Red Bull had looked capable of doing so until Singapore struck. Mercedes trimmed Red Bull's lead in the constructors' standings to 308 points, keeping them waiting at least another weekend for the title. Verstappen, who started on the hard tyres, moved up to second with Perez fourth but they were soon overhauled and plunged down the field after stopping under normal conditions.

MALIBU, California – The most amazing thing about the $2.1 million Rimac Nevera is how easy it is to just get in and drive. It sits low — very low — to the ground, and at first glance it looks like the simple act of getting into it could be complicated. Gears are shifted with a big knob to the left of the steering wheel, the power seat's adjustments are hidden in a touchscreen, and switches for the turn signals and headlights are mounted directly on the steering wheel. One of the first things I noticed as we got underway is that it's easy to see out of the Nevera. And the Nevera is very special indeed — as it should be for its just over $2 million asking price.

Verstappen hits back at Wolff over 'Wikipedia' comment

Wolff made his comments after this month's Italian Grand Prix, where Mercedes were beaten by both Ferraris as well as the two Red Bulls. Asked at the Singapore Grand Prix for his reaction, Verstappen said he was not disappointed. Verstappen, who is 145 points clear of team mate Sergio Perez in the championship and set for a third title well before the end of the season, suggested Wolff should focus on his own team. Marko had made his remarks on the energy drink company's television station following last weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza. An attempt by Marko to clarify his comments only dug a deeper hole. While Marko attends races in Red Bull Racing uniform, he reports to the energy drink company and is not an employee of the British-based champions. Germany's now-retired Vettel won four for Red Bull from 2010-13. Marko did compliment Perez for finishing second in Italy last weekend, a race that handed Verstappen a record 10th win in a row.
