Rohit Chopra, director of the CFPB, testifies during a House Financial Services Committee hearing on June 14, 2023. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau declared on Wednesday that customers of the burgeoning buy now, pay later industry must abide by the same federal protections as users of credit cards. The agency unveiled what it called an "interpretive rule" that deemed BNPL lenders essentially the same as traditional credit card providers under the decades-old Truth in Lending Act. "Regardless of whether a shopper swipes a credit card or uses Buy Now, Pay Later, they are entitled to important consumer protections under long-standing laws and regulations already on the books," CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said in a release. The CFPB, which last week was handed a crucial victory by the Supreme Court, has pushed hard against the U.S. financial industry, issuing rules that slashed credit card late fees and overdraft penalties.

Amazon is upgrading its decade-old Alexa voice assistant with generative artificial intelligence and plans to charge a monthly subscription fee to offset the cost of the technology, according to people with knowledge of Amazon's plans. Amazon's subscription for Alexa will not be included in the $139 per year Prime offering, and Amazon has not yet nailed down the price point, one source said. The Alexa team worried they had invented an expensive alarm clock, weather machine and way to play Spotify music, one source said. When reached for comment, Amazon pointed to the company's annual shareholder letter released last month. It has undergone a massive reorganization, with much of the team shifting to the artificial general intelligence, or AGI, team, according to three sources.

Mortgage interest rates fell for the third straight week last week, sparking increased demand for refinances. Total mortgage application volume rose 1.9% compared to the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. Applications to refinance a home loan rose 7% for the week and were 21% higher than the same week one year ago. Rates last week were just 32 basis points higher than they were a year ago, and that gap has been shrinking. While higher mortgage rates certainly hurt affordability, today's buyers are still facing very low supply and stiff competition, which fuels bidding wars.

I spend about $1,600 on cleaning services and childcare monthly and around $1,000 each quarter on a stylist. Paying for things like a housekeeper, childcare, and a stylist allows me to put more time into making more money. Cleaning the house would take hours for me, and doing laundry for four people can easily take four to five hours a week. That's when we started getting a nanny a few hours a week, twice a week. I also love the fact that I can go to my son's karate class three times a week with the extra help.

Bhutan may reconsider its controversial $100 daily tourism fees if the country's tourism industry recovers soon, Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay told CNBC on May 10. Bhutan reopened its borders in September 2022 with an increased "Sustainable Development Fee" of $200 per person per day in place. Indian travelers pay a reduced fee of 1,200 Bhutanese ngultrum ($14.50) per night, and daytrippers from India are exempt from the fee, according to Bhutan's Department of Immigration. The rate often included hotel, transportation and tour guide costs, and the mandatory $65 Sustainable Development Fee. Now, those costs are in addition to the $100 Sustainable Development Fee.

An earlier generation of Supreme Court justices seemed to possess the capacity for shame. In 1969, Justice Abe Fortas resigned his seat for accepting a $20,000 consulting fee (which he returned) from a foundation led by a man who was convicted of securities fraud. Whatever Justice Fortas believed about his own honor and morality, he understood that the Supreme Court is an inherently fragile institution, and that its nine justices cannot afford the slightest whiff of bias or corruption. They are saying, in effect, that they don’t care if any of this bothers you. To go by recent polls showing that this court’s public approval has approached record lows, it bothers many millions of Americans.

If you subscribe to Netflix's cheapest plan, and also get Peacock's cheapest plan, and also get Apple TV+, it will cost you $23 a month. So Peacock and Apple would benefit more from being in a bundle with Netflix, so they are more likely to discount their rates to make the bundle work. Digital distributors like Apple have made it very easy for subscribers to turn their streaming subscriptions on and off. Netflix, Comcast, and Apple all declined to comment about bundle economics. Disney's streaming margins, while still negative due to losses and nowhere near Netflix's, have improved significantly in recent quarters and are now on the doorstep of an important milestone. Disney's streaming overview Disney+ is its flagship streaming service across the globe. The ARPU discrepancy on Disney+ core helps explain why Netflix is much more profitable than Disney's streaming business. Given that Disney's streaming business has rolled out pretty much everywhere across the globe, Cruetz said moving forward "it's about driving more penetration in those markets." The latest is a matchup with Disney and HBO's parent Warner Bros Discovery , whose flagship streaming service is called Max.

A lot goes into creating and managing an income-producing portfolio that works for you. Knowing your expenses will give you a good sense of the income you’ll need. Ways to generate incomeTake the income you think you’ll need and subtract from that the income you expect. For example, if you need $65,000 a year but will only bring in $40,000, you’ll need to generate the other $25,000. • For money you’ll need in three to five years, use short-term corporate bonds as well as longer-term CDs.

In a filing on Monday, AEP Ohio asked the state's public utilities commission to approve its proposals to create a new customer class and a set of tariffs specifically for data centers. On the other hand, data centers have created roughly "less than one" full time job per megawatt of energy consumed, the filing said. AEP Ohio's new service queue has been paused since March while the company assesses its response to the 30,000 megawatts of requests from data centers. "We believe some of that queue is speculative, but we want the real customers and counterparties to commit to Ohio," Reitter said. CNN —As Venice continues to trial its entry fee for day trippers, a popular village in the Swiss Alps is looking to follow its lead. One idea being mulled over is the introduction of an entry free for some visitors, Swiss Info reported Thursday, citing local newspaper Berner Zeitung. The first day of the Venice entry charge on April 25 was met with protests by some locals who felt their home was being turned into a theme park. The famous city, which is at the global forefront of the move to charge day trippers specifically, will continue to pilot it until July 14. Once Mr. Trump was elected, he agreed to repay Mr. Cohen for the $130,000 hush-money deal and more. And at a meeting in Trump Tower just weeks before he was sworn in, Mr. Trump signed off on the fakery, Mr. Cohen recounted from the stand. “What, if anything, did Mr. Trump say at that time?” a prosecutor asked Mr. Cohen. There, he said, Mr. Trump’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, explained how Mr. Trump would reimburse Mr. Cohen for the payoff. To reach Mr. Trump, Mr. Cohen testified, he called the candidate’s bodyguard, Keith Schiller.
