Southwest Airlines and its pilots' union have reached a new preliminary labor agreement that would give pilots 50% cumulative pay increases over the life of the contract, a deal that could end years of tense negotiations. The five-year deal is worth about $12 billion, Casey Murray, president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, told CNBC on Tuesday. In comparison, larger rival United Airlines ' new four-year pilot contract is worth about $10 billion, according to the aviators' union. Once the contract becomes amendable, Southwest pilots would get 2.5% annual bonuses until the airline and union reach a new agreement. FedEx pilots rejected an preliminary deal earlier this year, while UPS pilots' union is set to start negotiations in mid-2024.

That is because in his four years working the tower at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the controller said, Southwest planes usually took off as soon as they got permission. “But hindsight being 20/20,” controller Damian Campbell told investigators, he “definitely could have held them,” referring to making the Southwest crew wait. Campbell said he couldn't even see the Southwest plane through the dense early morning fog on Feb. 4. FedEx is encouraging its pilots to apply for a job with PSA Airlines, a unit of American Airlines. The move came on the back of a decline in air cargo demand. FedEx employs around 5,800 pilots globally, while PSA Airlines has about 1,900 pilots. Interested FedEx pilots are eligible for an expedited interview process for a captain's position with PSA Airlines, according to the latter's online recruitment page. PSA Airlines is also offering FedEx pilots $250,000 in sign-on bonuses.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers (UAW) says its members have voted to reject a tentative agreement with Mack Trucks and will go on strike Monday. Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks, was quoted by Reuters as saying he was “surprised and disappointed” that the union had chosen to strike. CNN has reached out to Mack Trucks for comment. Mack Trucks is one of the major US makers of heavy duty and medium duty trucks, with deliveries of 27,000 in 2022 and 16,000 for the first half of 2023. UPS workers ratified a massive five-year labor deal that includes big wage increases and other improvements to work rules and schedules, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said Tuesday. The deal passed with 86.3% of votes, the highest contract vote in the history of Teamsters at UPS, according to the union. The parties had until July 31, when the previous labor contract was set to expire, to reach a deal and avoid a work stoppage. Current workers will get $2.75 more an hour this year and $7.50 an hour more over the five-year contract. FedEx pilots turned down a tentative agreement for a new labor contract earlier this summer.

New York CNN —On Tuesday, the Teamsters union will announce if their 340,000 members at UPS have ratified a new contract or if they rejected it, reviving the risk of a crippling nationwide strike. The company is calling it a win for the union members, for the company and for its customers. While rank and file at UPS voted down a deal five years ago, a majority did not participate in that ratification process. There are numerous examples in recent years of rank-and-file union members voting down deals recommended by their leadership and sometimes forcing a strike. What’s in the dealThe UPS deal being voted on does give the Teamsters union some of its key bargaining goals.

July 24 (Reuters) - FedEx pilots have rejected a tentative contract deal with the parcel delivery firm and the two sides will reopen negotiations, likely under the supervision of the National Mediation Board, the company and the pilots' union said on Monday. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) did not detail the reasons why members voted 57% to 43% to reject the deal. "Our members have spoken and we will now regroup," Captain Chris Norman, FedEx ALPA chair, said in a statement. The tentative FedEx deal included a 30% pay increase and a 30% increase to the pilots' legacy pensions. American Airlines (AAL.O) and the Allied Pilots Association are revising their tentative deal following the United agreement.

The FedEx pilots who belong to the Air Line Pilots Association voted 57% against the proposed contract, which was reached in May and endorsed by union leadership. But even with the “no” vote, the 5,200 FedEx pilots won’t be able to go on strike any time soon. FedEx pilots are covered by the Railway Labor Act, which despite the name, covers both rail workers and airline employees. The FedEx pilots, who unlike most FedEx employees count as airline employees when it comes to which labor law they work under, have not cleared any of those hurdles so far. There have been numerous examples in recent years of union rank-and-file voting no on deals that were recommended by union leadership.

May 17 (Reuters) - Pilots of FedEx Corp's (FDX.N) air delivery unit on Wednesday voted "overwhelmingly" in favor of a strike if needed, the Air Line Pilots Association said as it enters the final stages of a contract negotiation with the company. With aviators in short supply and air travel demand booming, pilots are enjoying enhanced bargaining power, encouraging them to push for better contracts with airlines and parcel firms. More than 97% of the union members took part in the vote and 99% of them authorized union leaders to call a strike, if needed, by the pilots of FedEx Express. "We are still in productive negotiations with our pilots under the supervision of a government-appointed mediator and will return to the bargaining table next week," FedEx said in a statement. Pilots' union at Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) too had recently backed a strike mandate ahead of the busy summer travel season.

May 17 (Reuters) - Pilots of FedEx Express, a unit of FedEx Corp (FDX.N), have voted "overwhelmingly" in support of a strike, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said on Wednesday. From over 97% of members who participated in the vote, 99% authorized union leaders to call a strike, if needed, to achieve a new contractual agreement with the delivery firm. FedEx pilots are currently working under contractual provisions and benefits arrived at in 2015, after negotiations for a new agreement began in 2021. Earlier this month, Southwest Airlines Co's (LUV.N) pilots union said its members had approved a strike mandate by an overwhelming majority ahead of the busy summer travel season. If either side declines, both parties enter a 30-day "cooling off" period, after which pilots and management can engage in self-help - a strike by the union or a lockout by management.

In this photo FedEx logo is seen in Washington D.C., United States on February 16, 2023. FedEx on Thursday hiked its full-year earnings forecast as it said cost-cutting measures offset continued demand weakness at units including FedEx Express. FedEx now expects adjusted earnings per share for fiscal year 2023 of between $14.60 and $15.20, up from a prior forecast of between $13.00 and $14.00. FedEx reported net income of $771 million for the period, down from $1.11 billion during the same quarter a year earlier. The company also said it expects volumes to improve in the current quarter and into its fiscal first quarter of next year.
The union representing FedEx pilots unanimously approved a strike authorization vote last week, according to a Wednesday press release. According to a statement on the FedEx pilots' website, pilot leaders allege the company has failed to "acknowledge pilot contributions." After 30 days, pilots and management could exercise self-help, which could include a union strike or a company lockout. A statement by pilot leaders says FedEx customers should plan alternative means in the event of a pilot strike. The update comes a month after the Southwest Airlines pilots' union called a vote to authorize a potential strike after souring contract negotiations.
United Airlines on Thursday said it was giving pilots 5% raises that were part of a pandemic cost-reduction agreement months ahead of schedule, citing the carrier's return to profitability and upbeat outlook. United is offering the raises during talks for a new contract with its pilots union. The company could have waited until May 2023 to pay the raises, Bryan Quigley, senior vice president of flight operations at United wrote to pilots on Thursday. United pilots overwhelmingly voted down a recent proposed agreement that would have increased pay by about 15% over 18 months. The union said that United pilots plan to picket outside United's flight training center in Denver next Tuesday.
Pilots talk as they look at the tail of an American Airlines aircraft at Dallas-Ft Worth International Airport. American Airlines ' pilots union is weighing an offer for higher raises in a new two-year contract proposal, the latest attempt to seal up a labor deal at the country's largest airline. The total would be higher than the raises American offered in June. Pilots are in short supply and regional airlines, where the shortage is most acute, have raised wages sharply this year. Those hikes included American Airlines' subsidiaries where pilots got 50% increases through August 2024.
