Elliott Management said Tuesday it will call a special meeting at Southwest Airlines "as soon as next week," shortly after the company put forward a sweeping board shakeup that it hoped might stave off a proxy fight. The push comes days before the airline's investor meeting, where it is expected to unveil improvements and operating changes. Southwest's shareholder meeting is typically scheduled for May, but by calling for a special meeting Elliott is looking to elect new directors much sooner than that. Earlier this month, executive chairman and former CEO Gary Kelly said he would step down after the carrier's shareholder meeting next year. "The need for change is urgent, and our request for a special meeting may come as soon as next week," Pike and Xu said.

Headline CPI had come in at 2% in May and June, in line with the Bank of England's target rate. Services inflation — which is closely watched by the BOE, given its dominance within the U.K. economy and its reflection of domestically-generated price rises — rose to 5.6% in August from 5.2% in July. Core inflation, excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, came in at 3.6%, up from the 3.3% recorded in July. "Despite recent data showing a stagnation in UK economic output and easing wage growth, core inflation remains sticky, with services inflation rising from 5.2% to 5.6% which will weigh heavily on the BOE's decision-making," Carter said in a note.

Reuters —Cruise will offer its autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform starting next year, the companies said on Thursday, as the General Motors-backed robotaxi firm attempts a comeback. The multi-year partnership will allow Uber riders to choose a trip using a Cruise autonomous vehicle, they said. Uber’s partnership with Cruise comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to unveil its delayed plans for a robotaxi product in October amid slowing demand for electric vehicles. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been tougher than expected and taken longer than promised due to complex technology, soaring investments, tight regulatory scrutiny and federal investigations. Activist investor Elliott Management is preparing to launch a proxy fight at Southwest Airlines , and intends to nominate as many as 10 directors to the company's 15-person board, according to a person familiar with the matter. Elliott plans to call a special meeting, rather than waiting for the company's annual shareholder meeting, the person said. Elliott needs to own at least 10% of the company in order to call a special meeting, under Southwest's bylaws, a threshold that it will likely cross soon. Southwest rebuffed those requests, and CEO Jordan since told CNBC that Elliott's engagement with the company had not been meaningful. The activist had already intimated that it would seek to call for a special meeting in its second letter to Southwest's board.

Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

New York CNN —Spirit Airlines, the ultra-low cost carrier known for charging bargain-hunting passengers for anything and everything, is introducing business class seating. Farther back in the plane Spirit will also allow passengers to pay more for seats in rows where the middle seat will not be sold. Spirit looked at merging, first with another ultra low cost carrier, Frontier Airlines, and then with JetBlue Airways. Last week Southwest Airlines, the nation’s older lower fare carrier, announced it would end its open seating policy it has used throughout its history and let passengers reserve seats for the first time. However, Southwest has not announced any plans to offer wider, business class seats.

Airlines now expect to grow flying about 4% year over year during the final three months of the year.
