American Express is one of Wells Fargo's top picks for a tougher recession scenario. The firm said the payment card company has an excellent risk-reward valuation — even in the case of revenue growth being cut in half. "Their ability to flex peak investment expense is a powerful lever," Wells Fargo said in a Wednesday client note. "We view AXP shares as quite defensive, and it's our Top Pick. We believe their earnings would hold up better than many expect should we head into a tougher economic environment than the mild recession we assume.

American Express is showing "strength in uncertain times," according to Wells Fargo, which is confident in the stock following an investor meeting with Chairman and CEO Stephen Squeri and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Campbell. Fandetti maintained his overweight rating on American Express, and reiterated his price target of $200 per share, implying 27% upside from Monday's close. He added that despite the "turmoil" in U.S. banking following the failure of SVB and Signature Bank that spurred a broad selloff in financial stocks, American Express was confident in its business outlook. Wells Fargo believes that American Express' advantage around small and premium business customers is strengthening, making it more difficult for its competitors to catch up. American Express shares were up 1.8% on Tuesday before the market open.
Ally Financial 's weak third-quarter results were enough for analysts at two major Wall Street shops to downgrade the auto lender. "We believe ALLY shares will trade at a discount to tangible book value, as used car prices decline and [net interest margin] moderates around Fed rate hikes," Fandetti said. Ally's stock also got hit with a downgrade to equal weight and an earnings per share forecast cut from Morgan Stanley. "These include rate hikes ending, bottoming of used car prices, and credit quality stabilizing." Ally shares have tumbled more than 44% this year.
