Read previewVice President Kamala Harris' campaign is in the process of choosing her running mate, and who she chooses will provide insight into her battle plan for November. With 20 electoral votes, winning the battleground state will likely be a crucial part of both former President Donald Trump and Harris' campaign. Choosing Shapiro, the state's governor, who has proven he can win in Pennsylvania, could significantly bolster Harris' ticket there, Gift said. Kevin Fahey, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Nottingham, agrees but told BI that a Shapiro pick may indicate some trepidation in Harris' campaign. Plus, he's already been an attack dog against Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, going after him for his Appalachian credentials.

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Thomas Gift, director of UCL's Centre on US Politics, told BI that Trump's selection of Vance was "a confident — some might say too confident" decision. AdvertisementShe noted that with Biden leading the Democratic ticket, Trump and Vance could effectively criticize Biden's age and competency. While Vance's first solo campaign rally in Virginia on Monday wasn't as disastrous or widely watched as Biden's debate performance, Fahey told Business Insider it still revealed a potential weakness. Beyond his loyalty to Trump, Fahey said, "Vance adds nothing to the Republican ticket."

CNN —“Fragile Beauty” is an exhibition of extremes. One mom told AP about how she had delayed important care for her child because she believed Kennedy’s vaccine falsehoods. The AP found dozens of individuals included in the book died of known causes not related to vaccines, including suicide, choking while intoxicated, overdose and allergic reaction. Kennedy’s Children’s Health Defense produces articles, newsletters, books, podcasts, even TV shows on its own CHD.TV. And hack into that.”Because of his national profile, Kennedy’s work has ripple effects beyond the most devoted anti-vaccine activists. But people involved in the response who spoke to AP said Kennedy and the anti-vaccine activists he supported made things worse.

After AP contacted Kennedy and others involved in the book last week, the president of Skyhorse Publishing, which co-published the book, texted the Faheys. She declined all vaccines for her son after buying into the insistence by Kennedy and other anti-vaccine “gurus” that vaccines cause autism. But people involved in the response said Kennedy and the anti-vaccine activists he supported made things worse. In June 2019, Kennedy and his wife, the actress Cheryl Hines, visited Samoa, a trip Kennedy later wrote was arranged by a local anti-vaccine influencer. He also met with anti-vaccine activists, one of whom wrote on Instagram that the meeting was “profoundly monumental ... for this movement."

Goth is for everyone, Tolhurst writes, and it’s not a “phase” one has to outgrow. “My life in Goth served as a kind of communal reverse meditation,” Tolhurst writes. Part of what appealed to Tolhurst in goth, and why he continues to consider himself goth, is its “inclusive philosophy,” he said. CNN —Dragons and zombies and Jedi, oh my. HBO’s gaudy show of force – with half the best-drama nominees and 127 bids overall, the highest total of any individual network or service – featured a combination of both. "Obi-Wan Kenobi," starring Ewan McGregor, was one of three "Star Wars" series to receive multiple Emmy nominations. Fabio Lovino/HBOWhen those nominees need to begin rehearsing their acceptance speeches is itself a source of mystery as of now. The last time a delay of the Emmys happened: 2001, after the September 11 terror attacks.

Law Firms Duane Morris LLP FollowJune 20 (Reuters) - David Weiss, the top federal prosecutor in Delaware, wrapped up the most closely watched investigation of his career on Tuesday when U.S. President Joe Biden’s son Hunter agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax crimes. Weiss, 67, who was appointed to his post by Republican then-President Donald Trump, agreed to stay on the job into the Biden administration to complete a long-running probe into Hunter Biden’s finances. Hunter Biden, 53, agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges of willfully failing to pay income taxes and reached an agreement on a gun-related offense that could allow him to avoid a conviction, according to court filings. “I don’t think he’s thinking about the politics at all,” said Thomas Ostrander, who worked with Weiss at law firm Duane Morris. Weiss was nominated to be U.S. attorney in Delaware by Trump in 2018 with the support of Delaware’s two Democratic U.S. senators.

The world is not reducing emissions fast enough to mitigate the most deadly effects of climate change, so it's time to study temporary methods to cool the Earth by blocking some of the sun's rays, according to an internationally recognized group of scientists. What altitude you're injecting it. How much you're injecting. Generally speaking, conversations about releasing particles into the stratosphere are referring to sulfur dioxide, but there are no clear answers to the other questions. Releasing sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere is fast and cheap compared to more long-term solutions.
Earth’s protective ozone layer is slowly but noticeably healing at a pace that would fully mend the hole over Antarctica in about 43 years, a new United Nations report says. “In the upper stratosphere and in the ozone hole we see things getting better,” said Paul Newman, co-chair of the scientific assessment. Natural weather patterns in the Antarctic also affect ozone hole levels, which peak in the fall. A third generation of those chemicals, called HFC, was banned a few years ago not because it would eat at the ozone layer but because it is a heat-trapping greenhouse gas. The report also warned that efforts to artificially cool the planet by putting aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect the sunlight would thin the ozone layer by as much as 20% in Antarctica.
McDonald's was reluctant to roll out Happy Meals to all restaurants in the 1970s, its inventor said. Bob Bernstein, an advertising exec, told CNN he got the idea when he saw his son eating cereal. Bernstein proceeded to design a box that the McDonald's golden arches as handles, as well as riddles, games, and illustrations. The Happy Meal has since become a crucial part of the McDonald's menu and has evolved over the past four decades. Data research firm Sense360 calculated in 2016 that McDonald's sells 3.2 million Happy Meals each day, generating about $10 million in revenue.
But four decades ago, when the first Happy Meal debuted, the company didn’t quite get it. They didn’t immediately embrace it,” Bob Bernstein, an advertising executive who created the Happy Meal in the late 1970s, said in a video interview from his Kansas City office, which is decked out with Happy Meal memorabilia and original art. The meal’s name was an offshoot of a 1960s McDonald’s jingle, in which it called itself the “happy place.” “It’s such a happy place / Hap, hap, hap, happy place,” it went. For some reason, the company’s corporate offices outside Chicago were reluctant to roll out the Happy Meal nationally. Mario Anzuoni/ReutersIn the 1990s, Beanie Babies, Transformers and Power Rangers Happy Meal toys were massive hits for McDonald’s.
The network has seen an early lift in linear-TV ratings since reviving unscripted franchises from the 2000s like "Jersey Shore" and "The Hills." Turn on MTV during any weeknight and you might think it's 2010, with new episodes from old reality-TV franchises like "The Hills," "Jersey Shore," and "Teen Mom" rolling out weekly. Parkes spoke with Business Insider about selling nostalgia with revivals like "The Hills: New Beginnings" and the "Jersey Shore" spin-offs as well as courting the next MTV generation. It followed another MTV revival, a dating spin-off of "Jersey Shore," called "Double Shot at Love with DJ Pauly D and Vinny." For the premiere of "The Hills," it was 24% — close to the 25% the "Jersey Shore: Family Vacation" spin-off had.
