There is a focus on fake stories to influence attitudes on subjects like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. But for the past year, the climate crisis has been the second-most targeted subject, according to the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). Official statistics, however, tell a different story: In 2022, renewables accounted for 23% of the energy consumed in the EU. The EU is considered a global leader in tackling planet-heating pollution, but climate disinformation could undermine the bloc’s ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2040, compared with 1990 levels. Its community standards policy in the past had only targeted video, but in April, it was expanded to include audio.

In a 2023 Pew survey on teen internet use, only about one-third of US teens ages 13 to 17 said they used Facebook. Compare that with Pew's 2014 survey, when 71% of teens said they used Facebook. Even so, there are few scenarios in which a middle-aged corporate executive can be treated like an aging rock star by thousands of fawning employees. Around the time Ballmer announced his plans to go, the company’s stock price was lower than when he started the job. The media was bemoaning Microsoft’s “lost decade.” While its tech rivals had seized on new markets, Microsoft had changed fairly little. Apple dominated smartphones, Google prevailed in search and giants like Facebook — which didn’t even exist when Ballmer took the reins — stood atop a whole new sector of the economy. With the arrival of Ballmer’s successor, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s stock price soared.

Not only would that deal another huge blow to China’s tech ambitions, it would further deepen the divide between two digital worlds centered around the rival economic superpowers. Congress on Tuesday approved legislation that could compel ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a national ban. That leaves few options for ByteDance to secure the future of TikTok in the US, its biggest market with 170 million users. “This includes everything from who owns and operates data centers, to space-based internet satellites, to undersea cables and, of course semiconductors.”In that sense, the TikTok ban has its silver lining for Beijing. Growing challenges for Chinese appsThe TikTok legislation was included in a wide-ranging foreign aid package meant to support Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan.

In today's big story, we're breaking down how to identify a meme stock . Three years after GameStop upended things, meme stocks are back in fashion. But how does one find a meme stock? Donald Trump is repeating his defense of TikTok, calling Facebook the real "enemy." Congress is considering a bill that would ban TikTok due to national security concerns. Around 40% of teenagers say they have cut back on their time on social media, according to a report published Monday by the Pew Research Center. Nearly the same proportion of teens acknowledge that they spend “too much” time on their smartphones (38%) and social media (27%). However, some revealed mixed emotions, as 44% of the teens surveyed said they feel anxious when they’re without their phones. Many parents also say they are keeping tabs on their teens’ smartphone and social media use, with half of parent respondents reporting they’ve looked through their children’s phones, particularly parents of younger teens. (And in most cases, their children seem to know it: 43% of teen respondents said their parents had looked through their phones.)

Could Trump Save TikTok?

Trump’s TikTok U-turnTikTok users have continued to flood the social media platform — and lawmakers’ inboxes — with pleas to halt a bill that would force its Chinese owners to divest or face a ban in the U.S.That effort to keep TikTok online has now attracted some unlikely backers, including Donald Trump. A recap: Last week, a powerful House committee voted 50-0 to remove TikTok from U.S. app stores by Sept. 30 unless its Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, sold its stake. President Biden said on Friday that he’d sign the bill if it reaches his desk — even as his campaign has embraced the platform. But Trump has potentially scrambled the political calculus in Washington. Starting last week, the former president has pushed back against a TikTok ban, arguing that such a move would strengthen Meta’s Facebook — the “true Enemy of the People!” (Remember that as president, Trump issued an executive order ordering ByteDance to divest its American assets.)

The S&P 500 rose for nine straight weeks, its longest winning streak since 2004, as optimism built about future interest rate cuts. Stoltzfus predicted that S&P 500 earnings will end 2024 between $240 and $250. "Just about everything that you buy costs more today than it cost in 2019, 2020, before 2021 when this started taking hold, except for stocks," Stoltzfus said. Another argument that's more widely discussed is that last year's gains were driven by a handful of large growth stocks. "Some, on a multiple basis, are considerably cheaper outside of Big Tech," Stoltzfus said.

Facebook now has 3 billion monthly users, but most of the growth came from outside the US and Canada. And while the app's monthly users have more-or-less increased quarter on quarter, there were panic signals when Facebook's daily active users shrank for the first time in the app's history in the last quarter of 2021. Facebook's monthly active users in the US and Canada increased by only around one million, while it actually dropped by two million in Europe, per the company's earnings presentation. The largest increase in Facebook users came from the Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world, at around 25 and 16 million monthly active users, respectively. The app amassed over 100 million users within its first five days.

For Yavuz and his counterparts, there's serious appeal in having another ad-supported app inside Meta's ad manager. Once Meta adds a check box to extend ads to Threads, ad buyers will check it. Facebook's ads, technology, and interfaces are much better than Twitter's," said Trevor Dudeck, CEO of ad agency Lemonade. "If it's just the same thing as Instagram, that's not going to be as enticing," said one executive at a major digital advertising agency. When Zuckerberg inevitably adds the Threads checkbox to Meta's ad platform, it'll be ominous for Twitter's flailing ad business.

A big tech company with billions of users introduces a new social network. Leveraging the popularity and scale of its existing products, the company intends to make the new social platform a success. If this sounds like Instagram’s new Threads app and its push against its rival Twitter, think again. Despite the internet search giant’s enormous audience, its social network failed to catch on as people continued flocking to Facebook — and later to Instagram and other social apps. But as Google+ shows, bigness alone is no guarantee of winning the fickle and faddish social media market.

He says a US ban of TikTok could crush his business, but he doesn't want to pivot to Instagram. The majority of his customers find him through TikTok, Spangler said, where he has over 237,000 followers across two accounts. "The immediate impact of a TikTok ban would be a loss of my primary income source." In April, Montana legislators voted in favor of a bill that would ban TikTok within state lines. But ideally, Spangler said, TikTok will avoid a ban and he won't have to rely too much on a pivot to YouTube.

The MemoriesGP website still advertises Bed Bath & Beyond as an authorized dealer and as a registry option. “We take concerns raised by our customers very seriously,” Bed Bath & Beyond said.
