LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cillian Murphy called himself a “very proud Irishman” after he trotted onstage to claim his first-ever Oscar for portraying the man who created the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster biopic “Oppenheimer.”“I'm a little overwhelmed,” said Murphy, who won best actor for his stellar role as J. Robert Oppenheimer. Murphy, though a regular presence in Nolan films going back almost two decades, had always been a supporting player. Murphy thanked Nolan and the director's wife, Emma Thomas, a producer on the film. “It's been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively, satisfying journey you've taken me on over the last 20 years,” Murphy said to Nolan. “But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him.”Murphy came into the Academy Awards a strong contender after picking up trophies at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and BAFTA Film Awards.

Christopher Nolan's quirks as a director are well known, from the absence of chairs on his sets to his refusal to use a smartphone or email. Robert Downey Jr., who appeared in Nolan's historical epic "Oppenheimer" this past summer, says the 53-year-old director has a very specific quality that makes him a great leader. "He won't ask anyone to do anything that he's not a thousand percent willing to do himself, twice as hard," Downey Jr. told Variety in a joint interview with costars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt last month. A Nolan set, Murphy said, can feel "a bit like a private, intimate laboratory," something he appreciates as a performer. "Oppenheimer" earned 13 nominations at next month's Oscars, including acting nods for Murphy, Downey Jr. and Blunt, as well as Best Director for Nolan.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — Offshore wind power company Orsted is trying to get out of a $300 million guarantee it agreed to pay New Jersey in the event it failed to build its first wind farm off the state's coast. Last Tuesday, the Danish firm scrapped its Ocean Wind I and II projects in southern New Jersey, saying the projects were no longer financially feasible. It also was obligated to pay an additional $200 million toward the development of the offshore wind industry in New Jersey. Orsted wrote off $4 billion last week, due largely to costs associated with the cancellation of its two New Jersey projects. New Jersey still has several other offshore wind projects in various stages of development, with four new proposals submitted in August alone.

Microsoft is set to shed about $100 billion from its market capitalization if the loses hold until close of trading. "The tech earnings season has started on a mixed note," said Mark Haefele, global wealth management chief investment officer at UBS in a client note. "The tone set by quarterly results over the next week will be crucial to the performance of tech stocks through the rest of the third quarter." Large tech companies, which rely heavily on borrowed money, have been pressured since the Fed started its tightening cycle to tame inflation. However, optimism over AI and hopes that the Fed is nearing the end of its rate hiking cycle have supported tech stocks in recent months.

The Atlantic League, which has been active since 1998, is a place of optimism and experimentation.

Bumb three weeks ago blocked other parts of the law in a similar lawsuit brought by different plaintiffs. Those measures included bans on carrying guns in public libraries, museums, bars and restaurants and on private property without the owner's explicit permission, as well as transporting loaded guns in vehicles. Other parts of the law, including measures tightening gun licensing requirements and handgun safety rules, remain in effect. Both lawsuits argue that the state's new restrictions violate the right to bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. U.S. District Judge Renee Marie Bumb said that the state's new restrictions violated the right to bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Tyler Jones, a spokesperson for Murphy, said the governor's office was disappointed that the judge had struck down "common sense restrictions" and would work to get them reinstated. The decision left open the possibility for states to restrict guns in "sensitive places," but said any restrictions must be consistent with the nation's historical tradition of gun regulation. Bumb ruled Monday that New Jersey's restrictions did not fit with that tradition. LOS ANGELES, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Comedian Eddie Murphy will accept a lifetime achievement honor next month at the Golden Globes, the annual ceremony that is trying to restore its reputation in Hollywood after a diversity and ethics scandal. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that votes on the Globe winners, announced on Wednesday that Murphy would receive the Cecil B. DeMille award to celebrate his contributions to entertainment. Previous DeMille award recipients have included Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Sophia Loren, Tom Hanks, Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro. The honor for Murphy adds a big name to the Globes telecast on Jan. 10. The Globes were tainted after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation probed the HFPA's practices and revealed the organization had no Black members.
