The country is confronting a perilous moment, internally estranged over politics and culture and as multiple foreign policy crises deepen. Biden has dedicated his term to expanding NATO to counter the Kremlin’s onslaught on Ukraine and threat to wider Europe. This leaves Biden badly needing to use Thursday night’s debate to convince voters that he can make their lives better — and soon. Post-game coverage of Thursday’s debate is certain to zero in on the best verbal jabs, soundbites and the stamina and energy of the rival candidates. But the most meaningful impact of the clash between Trump and Biden will only begin to unfold after noon on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025.

Read previewThe US Army tested its new strike missile against a moving sea target in the Pacific earlier this month. The recent strike marked a "significant milestone" in the development of the new Precision Strike Missile, the Army said. The PrSM, a next-generation long-range precision strike weapon, will eventually replace the older MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS. The exercise involved the US Army's prototype Autonomous Multi-Domain Launcher and two Precision Strike Missiles, which were "able to engage a moving maritime target in conjunction with other Joint assets." Oil demand will rise for another 10 years, though producers are pulling back on new investment. The bank estimated oil demand would peak around 110 million barrels a day in 2034. AdvertisementThe global oil market could run into a supply shortage as peak demand is still a decade away, according to Goldman Sachs analysts. That's due to rising oil demand in Asia and increasing demand for petroleum products, the analysts said. "While peak oil demand is still a decade away, capital is slowing for the production of crude oil and oil products, contributing to constrained supply in the medium term," they later added.

The Promise of Weight-Loss Drugs
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In the past two years, Ozempic has become a synonym for weight loss. Ozempic was weight loss; weight loss was Ozempic. Scientists believe the drugs are about to revolutionize several fields of medicine, such as cardiology and endocrinology. If these trials prove successful, the drugs may extend many lives by years, save billions in medical costs and divide public health into before-and-after epochs. These drugs, called GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists), mystify even the scientists who study them.

For Indiana, Kelsey Mitchell recorded a team-high 24 points with reigning Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston adding 18 points. Putin said Russia and North Korea have ramped up ties to a “new level.” Kim, meanwhile, called the new “alliance” a “watershed moment” in bilateral relations. In contrast, the reaction from China, the main political and economic patron for both Russia and North Korea, has been all but muted. “But they do know that China plays an irreplaceable role for both Russia and North Korea,” she said. China remains the largest trade partner to both Russia and North Korea, providing a crucial lifeline to the heavily sanctioned economies. “China doesn’t think that an alliance between Russia and North Korea would be a betrayal,” said Liu with the City University of Hong Kong.

Prosecutors in Manhattan said on Friday that a judge should extend major elements of a gag order that was placed on Donald J. Trump, citing dozens of death threats made to District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg and other officials. The order, issued before Mr. Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial began in mid-April, bars him from attacking witnesses, jurors, court staff and members of the family of the judge who presided over the trial, Juan M. Merchan. It does not prohibit Mr. Trump from criticizing Mr. Bragg, Justice Merchan or the trial itself. In a 19-page filing on Friday, prosecutors argued that Justice Merchan no longer needed to enforce the portion of the gag order relating to trial witnesses, but they said he should keep in place the provisions protecting jurors, prosecutors, court staff and their families. The New York Police Department has logged 56 “actionable threats” since the beginning of April directed against Mr. Bragg, his family and staff members in his office, according to an affidavit provided with the filing.

Organizers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics plan to hold swimming in the home of the NFL’s Rams and Chargers — and softball and canoe slalom in Oklahoma. That’s according to an amended venue plan unveiled Friday by LA28, the 2028 Games’ organizing committee. It will be the largest swimming venue in Games history, per LA28, with 38,000 seats. LA28 organizers faced one complication with the SoFi swimming plan, however: The stadium is also set to be part of the Games’ opening ceremonies. The venue plan adjustments are in part due to new arenas that have become available for use and a previously assigned venue that became unavailable, LA28 said.

Danny Werfel, IRS commissioner, speaks after being ceremonially sworn in at the IRS headquarters in Washington on April 4, 2023. The IRS will deny billions of dollars' worth of claims for a pandemic-era tax break while working to process lower-risk filings, the agency said on Thursday afternoon. Enacted to support small businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic, the employee retention credit, or ERC, is worth thousands of dollars per eligible employee. However, the agency stopped processing new filings in September amid a surge of "questionable claims," the IRS said in a news release. Overall, compliance efforts for erroneous ERC claims have topped more than $2 billion since last fall, the IRS said.

Jack Taylor | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON — European stocks are heading for a cautiously higher open Friday as investors monitor a slew of central bank decisions and data releases. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index is on course for a weekly gain of more than 1.5%, its best performance since early May. Attention this week turned to central bank action, as the Swiss National Bank announced it would cut interest rates by 0.25 percentage points to 1.25%. The SNB became the first major central bank to cut rates during this cycle back in March. The Bank of England meanwhile kept interest rates unchanged at a 16-year high of 5.25%.

After my kids were born, my love for online grocery ordering grew even more. While I used to use a grocery delivery service nearly every week, I only use it in a pinch now. On top of that, there can be things like pick-up fees, service fees, delivery charges, and tips if you use a grocery delivery service. All of this means that I end up having to go to the grocery store anyway, usually stressed because I was counting on the grocery delivery service to save time. Using a grocery delivery service can save time and energy, but it also comes with added costs and, oftentimes, frustration.

The U.S. Department of Education may extend the eligibility of a popular student loan forgiveness program to early childhood educators. The agency on Thursday announced that it was issuing a request for information on potentially broadening the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program to include workers in early childhood education settings, many of whom report low wages. "Early childhood educators help young children learn, grow, and thrive," said U.S. "If these educators can access Public Service Loan Forgiveness, we can help our youngest children, their families, and their communities." Including early childhood educators would likely expand the reach of the program to at least some for-profit employers.

With ballistic missiles regularly flying nearby, Japan and South Korea need little reminder of the threat that North Korea and its nuclear arsenal poses to its neighbors. But the pledge, along with indications that Russia could help bolster North Korea’s continuing quest to build its nuclear capabilities, rattled officials in Tokyo and Seoul. Mr. Kim has grown increasingly hostile toward South Korea and this year abandoned a longtime goal of reunifying with the South, however unlikely that might have been. Now he describes the South solely as an enemy that must be subjugated, if necessary, through a nuclear war. And he has often tested his ballistic missiles by flying them toward Japan, demonstrating North Korea’s provocative stance toward its former colonizer.

Spaceflight veterans Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the space station aboard the Starliner on June 6. It’s not uncommon for astronauts to unexpectedly extend their stay aboard the space station — for days, weeks or even months.
