Voting in Katmai National Park's famed Fat Bear Week was underway Wednesday after a bear killed one of this year's competitors and delayed the bracket reveal by a day. Voting takes place over the course of seven days, culminating in Fat Bear Tuesday, when one bear is crowned the fattest of the season. The winner will then try to beat Bear #128, also known as Grazer, a mother bear who holds last year's Fat Bear title. The injured cub later died and the surviving cub competed in Fat Bear Junior 2024, according to the park service. In another round one face-off, Bear #903, a smaller male and another Fat Bear Week newbie, will meet Bear #909, the mother of the junior contest's winner.

CNN —The bracket for 2024’s Fat Bear Week contest was revealed Tuesday night, but only after a deadly bear-on-bear attack at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve on Monday delayed the unveiling. In what’s become a bona fide fall ritual, public voting in the annual Fat Bear contest is scheduled to start at noon ET Wednesday. A preliminary contest for Fat Bear Junior has already been held, with Bear 909 Jr. taking the top spot. Grazer, also known as Bear 128 to the fans of Fat Bear Week at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, won this year’s contest, handily defeating Chunk 108,321 to 23,134 in the finals. They then vote in tournament style brackets over the course of a week, advancing bears to the next round until a champion is crowned. Grazer was first identified as one the bears dining in Katmai’s Brooks River in 2005 as young cub. The runner-up32 Chunk shows off his fat form on September 17, 2023. Even Bear 747 – the 2022 Fat Bear Week champ – yielded fishing spots and salmon to him. Fat Bear Week has a new furry champ who is believed to be one of the biggest brown bears on the planet, but not after a voting scandal ensnarled the results. The latest winner of the competition, in which people vote for their favorite fat bear located in the Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, is a bear known as Bear Force One, or bear number 747. The winner of the competition, put on by Explore.org and the National Park Service, was announced Tuesday night.
