America's power grid is old and stressed. The main problem: It takes way too long to build towering high-voltage power lines that carry electricity across state lines and to hook up new power to the grid. AdvertisementBut upgrading the power grid gets bogged down by several issues. A new rule issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission this month is aimed at tackling some of the problems. If the US doesn't invest in regional transmission lines, customers will pay the price in the form of congestion and more life-threatening outages.

Super PACs, which can accept unlimited donations, are legally barred from coordinating with or donating directly to politicians' campaigns. Advertisement"I'm gratified that a bipartisan group at the FEC has rightly rejected this baseless, headline-seeking complaint," Luke Thompson, the executive director of the super PAC, told Business Insider. "This super PAC was keeping him afloat as a candidate with research, messaging ideas, and all of the stuff that basically allowed him to remain viable." In recent years, it's become increasingly common for campaigns and super PACs to use public websites to get around existing campaign finance laws. The photograph, taken in 2008 by the late British photographer Tim Hetherington, is from a time when nearly a fifth of all combat in Afghanistan was taking place in the six-mile valley. Tim HetheringtonBoth Hetherington and Junger became “enamoured with the opportunity to show the intimacy of a platoon in combat,” Junger said in an interview via telephone. “My examination of young men and violence, or of young men… It’s as much a journey about my own identity as it is about those young soldiers,” he wrote. ‘It took a little bit from his soul’In this process, Hetherington worried about how photography could be extractive. Basic income has become a trending strategy to combat poverty in cities nationwide. ARPA funds have been used to partially or fully fund most US basic-income pilots so far, but funds are set to expire. While philanthropy and nonprofit work have been central to basic-income pilots, they are not always a long-term or large-scale funding solution. More GBI programs are electing to focus on specific groups of participants, like low-income parents with children and foster youth. The program is funded through the Temporary Aid to Needy Families Program (TANF), an existing federal cash assistance program for low-income families.

Things are so bad that even tech workers, who make some of the highest salaries of any profession, are feeling the crunch. Entry-level tech workers made an average of $75,262 in 2023, and could only afford 2.1% of studio and one-bedroom rental apartments in the city, StreetEasy found. "If these tech employees can't afford housing, then who can?" But even as New York City has created 800,000 new jobs in the last 10 years, it's only built 200,000 new homes. This time, officials were unveiling plaques designating the former Rio Vista Bracero Reception Center in Socorro, Texas, as a National Historic Landmark. While the bracero program provided a legal pathway for guest workers, crackdowns on illegal immigration were also common during that period. Why Rio Vista is so significant – and rareThe Rio Vista site, a key hub for the program, is about a 30-minute drive from El Paso, Texas. Before its role in the bracero program, the area known as Rio Vista Farm was a poor farm and an orphanage. All of this went through Corral’s mind as he revisited Rio Vista on May 11.

“It is so incredibly important to diversify our revenue and business model,” Swati Sharma, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Vox, told CNN by phone Monday. In those four years, it has received more than 100,000 contributions, Vox Media’s consumer revenue chief Priyanka Arya told CNN. “We are taking a bet on people caring about news organizations,” Sharma told me. News publishers are navigating challenging terrain, and most have been forced to undergo painful layoffs in recent years, including Vox. Which is likely why so many major newsrooms have signaled they will, in one way or another, wade into creating and/or bolstering subscription models that include members-only content to supplement other revenue streams.

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Alito poses for an official portrait at the East Conference Room of the Supreme Court building on October 7, 2022 in Washington, DC. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito sold shares of beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev as conservatives were ditching the Bud Light brewer over its partnership with a transgender social media influencer . The Supreme Court did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on Alito's transaction report or the timing of his stock activity. In May 2023, Modelo replaced Bud Light as the top-selling beer in the U.S. Data from around that time showed sales of Bud Light had dropped nearly 25% year over year. Roth noted that the beer companies in question have no pending business before the Supreme Court that he can think of.

E-commerce artisan marketplace Etsy is at a crossroads as it tries to balance declining gross merchandise sales, a tumbling stock price and high inflation with the needs of its 7 million sellers. Etsy CEO Josh Silverman attributed the tough quarter to consumers' continued reduction in discretionary spending. The Covid pandemic brought Etsy new customers and a massive sales boost; its stock price reached an all-time high of $296.91 on Nov. 24, 2021. The number of active users on Etsy's platform has increased almost 70% since 2019, but purchases haven't followed. About half knew Biden was for marriage equality but only one knew he was for it before President Barack Obama. These students knew little about the warmer parts of Biden’s pre-presidential story, but a lot about the more troublesome aspects. "As a result, consumers continue to scrutinize their spending and make near-term decisions based primarily on need, price and perceived value. London CNN —The world is facing a shortage of the minerals needed to make the electric vehicles, wind turbines, solar panels, and other clean energy technologies essential to ending its reliance on fossil fuels. The world is on track meet only 70% of global copper demand and 50% of lithium demand by 2035, the agency added. Prices for some critical minerals have returned to their lower pre-pandemic levels, the IEA noted, with those needed to make batteries falling particularly sharply. However, “today’s well-supplied market may not be a good guide for the future, as demand for critical minerals continues to rise,” it added. Concentration risksConcentration of critical minerals production in a small number of countries increases the risk of shortages, the agency warned.

"Once they enter the Red Sea, though, ships can be tracked by spotters ashore or on boats or using mobile Houthi radars ashore. Does Your Dog Really Belong in This Restaurant?
  + stars: | 2024-05-16 | by ( Rachel Sugar | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a quiet weekday evening inside a restaurant in Brooklyn, a dog under a table announced its presence with a single pronounced yap. At a scoop shop in downtown Manhattan, a large white poodle was spoon-fed what appeared to be vanilla ice cream. In the dining room of a chic Midtown restaurant, a teacup Pomeranian strutted across the floor. There are 617,000 licensed dogs in New York City, and the vast majority, presumably, eat in. But while no city agency tracks how many dogs are regulars at the city’s restaurants, anecdotal evidence suggests that the number is far from zero.

Rinehart has reportedly called for the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) to remove her portrait, one of 21 individual works that make up a single piece in Namatjira’s exhibition “Australia in Colour,” from display. The painting of Rinehart is one of 21 portraits by artist Vincent Namatjira that feature in his exhibition "Australia in Colour." Vincent NamatjiraAustralian media has reported that Rinehart approached the NGA’s director and chair to request the painting’s removal. Blum turned to programs mostly in states where abortion access — and, by extension, abortion training — is likely to remain protected, like California, Colorado, and New Mexico. The AAMC analysis found the number of applicants to OB-GYN residency programs in abortion ban states dropped by 6.7%, compared with a 0.4% increase in states where abortion remains legal. For internal medicine, the drop observed in abortion ban states was over five times as much as in states where abortion is legal. The AAMC analysis notes that even in states with abortion bans, residency programs are filling their positions — mostly because there are more graduating medical students in the U.S. and abroad than there are residency slots. Stulberg and others worry that this self-selection away from states with abortion restrictions will exacerbate the shortages of physicians in rural and underserved areas.
