For those outside the Westminster bubble, the announcement felt less like a starting pistol than a final gasp. But unlike Sunak, who with his wife Akshata Murty is worth an estimated £651 million ($828 million), most of us can’t afford it. The British economy never fully recovered from the 2008 recession and, consciously or not, most people still feel the sting every day. As Sam Knight recently noted in the New Yorker, the average British worker is estimated to be £14,000 ($17,800) worse off per year now than they would be if earnings had risen at pre-crisis rates. Her disastrous mini-budget wiped £30 billion off the UK economy that autumn, according to independent think tank Resolution Foundation, and sent interest rates rocketing.

First it was France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, who angered his NATO allies by suggesting that soon the West could be forced to send troops to Ukraine, portending a direct confrontation with Russian forces that the rest of the alliance has long rejected. Then Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany took his own turn exposing new divisions. Trying to justify why Germany was withholding its most powerful missile, the Taurus, from Ukrainian hands, he hinted that Britain, France and the United States may secretly be helping Ukraine target similar weapons, a step he said Germany simply could not take. While neither Britain or France has commented officially — they almost never discuss how their weapons are deployed — Mr. Scholz was immediately accused by former officials of revealing war secrets. “Scholz’s behavior has showed that as far as the security of Europe goes he is the wrong man in the wrong job at the wrong time,” Ben Wallace, Britain’s former defense minister, told The Evening Standard, a London daily.

CNN —There’s method dressing, and then in the case of BAFTA-winning Irish actor Barry Keoghan, there is method un-dressing. On Wednesday, the “Banshees of Inisherin” star set the internet alight when he made a divisive nude appearance in a video promoting Vanity Fair’s latest Hollywood Issue cover. It was a nod to Keoghan’s latest role (and one explosive final scene) in British director Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” a salacious depiction of class, power and desire set at Oxford University in 2007. If you’re yet to watch the bloody, bathwater-soaked film, forgive us for spoiling the fact Keoghan gets naked in that too. While naked male magazine covers are rare, they’re typically infused with a certain sense of humor that protects them from public rebuttal.
