WASHINGTON — President-elect Joe Biden has promised to rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement if Iran abides by the deal, but both sides will have to race against the clock and navigate a political minefield to reach that goal. Iran and the bombThe 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers lifted punishing economic sanctions on Tehran in return for strict limits on Iran's nuclear activities. If Iran returns to strict compliance with the nuclear deal, the United States would rejoin the agreement as a starting point for follow-on negotiations," Biden wrote. Joe Biden's defeat of Donald Trump caused widespread relief in European capitals. There was a huge collective sigh of relief in Berlin when it became clear that Joe Biden had beaten Donald Trump in the presidential election earlier this month. President Trump made a habit of attacking Germany for failing to spend 2% of its annual GDP on defense, as required by the military alliance. Such is Trump's deep unpopularity in Berlin that caving into one of his foreign policy demands was almost impossible. "The Biden administration might make it actually easier for Germans to take a clearer position on China," Dalibor Rohac said.

Budapest and Warsaw on Monday vetoed the adoption of the 1.1 trillion euro 2021-2027 EU budget and the 750 billion recovery fund because the budget law included a clause which makes access to money conditional on respecting the rule of law. Because both the budget and the recovery fund require unanimous support of all of the EU’s 27 countries, without the consent of Poland and Hungary no EU country will get any budget or recovery money in the coming years, including Poland and Hungary themselves, who are both net beneficiaries of EU funds. If the link is introduced, both countries risk losing access to tens of billions of euros in EU funds. But a large group of countries led by the Netherlands as well as the European Parliament want an even stronger link and refuse not approve the budget without it. “We are awaiting new proposals that will be coherent with EU treaties and secondly, will be in line with the conclusions of the European Council (decisions) from July, when the EU budget was agreed,” Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller told state radio.

REUTERS/Yves HermanBRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union edged towards finalising its next 1.8 trillion euro ($2.12 trillion) budget and COVID recovery package on Thursday after an agreement that countries breaching rule of law commitments risk losing EU funds. Finnish European lawmaker Petri Sarvamaa, who sits on the parliament’s budget committee, called the agreement a milestone for protecting EU values. Both the European Parliament and the European Council, the body representing the 27 EU countries, will have to approve the agreement. In September, Hungary said a German proposal to tie future EU aid to rule of law conditions as “unacceptable”.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the fighting via telephone on Wednesday, calling on the warring sides to immediately de-escalate tensions. CNBCLeaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan have dismissed the suggestion of holding peace talks, accusing each other of obstructing negotiations. The Kremlin has offered to host talks between the two sides, claiming it had contacted the foreign ministers of both Armenia and Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
