CNN —Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke the 400-meter hurdles world record for the fifth time on Sunday, clocking 50.65 seconds at the US Olympic Trials. Running in lane five, McLaughlin-Levrone was leading the race by the 250-meter mark and had opened up a huge lead as she raced down the home straight. “I would love to dip under 50 at some point,” said McLaughlin-Levrone. In the men’s event, Rai Benjamin set a trials record of 46.46 as he looks to upgrade the silver medal he won behind Norwegian Karsten Warholm at the Tokyo Olympics. CJ Allen and Trevor Bassitt also made the team after finishing second and third respectively.

On Friday she added to her list of remarkable feats by competing in the 100-meters hurdles at the US Olympic track and field trials for the first time in 12 years, aged 41. “I know what it’s like not to make the Olympic team … You sometimes feel your world is over in your 20s if you don’t make a team. CNN —Sha’Carri Richardson became the second-fastest women’s 200-meter runner in the world this year as she cruised to victory in her heat at the US Olympic Trials. Long ran the fifth-fastest time in Thursday’s heats, behind Gabby Thomas – the 200m bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics – NCAA record holder Abby Steiner, and 2019 world championship silver medalist Brittany Brown. “Any time I touch the track, there’s an opportunity for me to work on being my best self,” Richardson told NBC after her heat. The 24-year-old ran the fastest 100m time in the world this year with her victory at the trials on Saturday, finishing in 10.71 seconds. In the men’s event, Tokyo silver medalist Rai Benjamin comfortably won his heat, while Caleb Dean set the fastest time of the day with 49.45.

CNN —Athing Mu’s hopes of defending her 800-meter title at the Paris Olympics ended in heartbreaking fashion on Monday as she fell to the floor at the US track and field trials. The trio of Nia Atkins, who won in a time of 1:57.36, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker completed the podium to make the Olympic team. Mu’s fall underlined the sometimes brutal nature of the US Olympic trials, which dictate that only the top three finishers will make the team for an individual event, regardless of an athlete’s pedigree and past results. Despite her lack of races due to a lingering hamstring issue, Mu appeared in good shape at the trials, winning her semifinal in a time of 1:58.84. “I don’t know if my season’s over yet,” Wilson told reporters on Monday.
