It is the first German-language adaptation of a 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, which was also made into a best picture-winning film in 1930. The film was nominated in nine categories this year, including best picture. "All Quiet on the Western Front" beat out international film nominees "EO" from Poland, "The Quiet Girl," from Ireland; Belgian film "Close;" and "Argentina, 1985" from Argentina.

LOS ANGELES, March 12 (Reuters) - Independent film studio A24 emerged as the big winner at Oscar night on Sunday, sweeping every major category, propelled by the quirky, reality-bending film "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and the drama "The Whale." The studio claimed a total of nine Academy Awards, with "Everything Everywhere All at Once" receiving seven Oscars, including for best picture, director, actress, original screenplay and supporting actor and actress. Disney's leading Oscar contender, "The Banshees of Inisherin," received multiple nominations, but no awards. CNN celebrated its first Oscar win for "Navalny," a portrait of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, which won best documentary feature film. NBCUniversal collected 15 nominations, led by Universal Picture’s "The Fabelmans," directed by Steven Spielberg, and six for "Tar" from Focus Features, but no Oscars.

If you think completing an Ironman takes perseverance, try getting Hollywood to invest in the retelling of a World War I novel. It took Scottish screenwriter and professional triathlete Lesley Paterson 16 years to see her Oscar-nominated screenplay for “All Quiet on the Western Front” come to life. The persistence paid off, as the film, an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 antiwar novel of the same title, took home seven BAFTAs—the most prestigious British film awards—in February, including for the best adapted screenplay. The “All Quiet” script, by Ms. Paterson, Ian Stokell and director Edward Berger, earned one of the film’s nine Academy Award nominations. The Oscars take place Sunday night.

"All Quiet on the Western Front" tells the story of young students who go to World War One blinded by right-wing propaganda and nationalist hate, something that Grunert says resonates with modern times. The movie is also nominated for best international feature film, adapted screenplay, cinematography, visual effects and production design. That film and Steven Spielberg's coming-of-age story "The Fabelmans" were the two big winners at the Golden Globes earlier this month, but the latter received just one BAFTA nod, for original screenplay. Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Presley biopic "Elvis" came in third with nine nominations, including best film and a leading actor recognition for Austin Butler. Drama "Tar", in which Cate Blanchett plays a gay conductor of a Berlin orchestra whose career comes tumbling down due to an abuse scandal, had five nods, including best film, director, original screenplay and leading actress.

But a shorter and more satisfying narrative would not have been as true to the material, or to Remarque’s pacifism. This "All Quiet on the Western Front” doesn’t have a real plot, per se. For most of the movie, viewers and soldiers alike know that peace is coming at any moment. War is a kind of anti-narrative, which causes a rupture in the satisfying progress of the plot. “All Quiet on the Western Front” is an antiwar movie that refuses to turn war into a tale of progress or success.

Fully understanding the war—who does?—may not be necessary in appreciating the disturbing, moving and sometimes too-beautiful production. But that production certainly puts a Teutonic tweak on history, sometimes to outrageous effect. Can a concrete room filled with the corpses of innocent young German recruits—who have all just been gassed—suggest anything other than the death camps of World War II? These sequences sanctify the historical position that the onerous terms of the treaty are what led to Hitler and the Holocaust. Just for good measure, one of the concluding murders in the film is committed by a French farm boy, avenging a theft of duck eggs by two starving German soldiers.

The manner of writing is captivating and adding the pictures to the end of the book, was the perfect way to end this autobiography. At the same time, the twists of the plot are merciless – the reader falls under the spell and into the trap. Although he begins his book by recalling how his mother threw him out of a minibus because of a racist, dangerous driver, he defines very well his relationship with her.
