SAN ANTONIO — In the three weeks since Texas’ attorney general executed raids at the homes of several Latino election activists, the state’s oldest civil rights organization has been marshaling members to step up voter registration for what they say is a stand against voter suppression. A voter at news conference to respond to allegations by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, on Aug. 26 in San Antonio. A contingent of LULAC members and other Hispanic activists attended the hearing in support of Medina. Texas LULAC President Gabriel Rosales said in a phone interview that along with the fear, the raids “kind of lit a fire from Hispanics around Texas. “Councils have been doubling their efforts to engage Latino voters across Texas and across the country,” Proaño said.

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas — Crews on Monday tore down a Texas church where a gunman killed more than two dozen worshippers in 2017, using heavy machinery to raze the small building even after some families sought to preserve the scene of the deadliest church shooting in U.S. history. A new church was completed for the congregation about a year and a half after the shooting. Workers continue demolition of the First Baptist Church, in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Monday, on Aug. 12, 2024. In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs alleged that some church members were wrongfully removed from the church roster before the vote was taken. After the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, it was torn down and replaced.

The Super Heavy booster and Starship spacecraft successfully separated after liftoff, as the Starship lit up its engines and pushed away. SpaceX's Starship launches on its second test flight from the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, on Saturday morning. The method was used to separate the Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket after liftoff. Then, the spacecraft’s flight termination system was triggered to prevent it from veering off course, bringing an early end to the test flight. After April’s explosive first test flight, SpaceX noted “success comes from what we learn, and we learned a tremendous amount.”

The measure, passed Tuesday in the House after being approved earlier in the Senate, will make it a state crime to cross the border from Mexico between ports of entry, for anyone without legal authorization to be in the U.S. It is set to allow state and local police to begin arresting people suspected of such crossings. Local judges could then order removal of migrants who prefer that to prosecution.
