Stokes says he always planned to play at World Cup
  + stars: | 2023-09-14 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The talismanic 32-year-old, the architect of England's maiden 50-overs World Cup triumph in 2019, announced his shock ODI retirement last year citing his heavy workload. As speculation that he might return to the format for England's title defence swirled during the Ashes in June and July, Stokes quashed talk of a possible return to the ODI squad, citing a nagging knee injury. However, he returned to the England set-up last month ahead of their World Cup title defence in India, and gave another example of his explosive batting in the third ODI against New Zealand on Wednesday, smashing 182 off 124 balls. "I knew that I'd be playing in these games and potentially in the World Cup then when I said that, but it was just the easiest thing to say that and put you (the media) off the radar." "This is the first time that I've been clear in my mind that that's the one thing I can focus on," Stokes said.

Record Stokes ton leads England to huge win over New Zealand

Stokes, who last month reversed his retirement from ODI cricket, hammered a 124-ball 182 to record England's highest individual score in the 50-overs format, bettering Jason Roy's previous record of 180. "Coming back into the team after a while out, it's nice to come back and help the team," Stokes said. We weren't able to build partnerships," New Zealand captain Latham said. There's levels that we can keep achieving, there's more in the tank," England captain Buttler said. The series is crucial for both sides' preparations as they look ahead to next month's Cricket World Cup in India.

England's Stokes comes out of ODI retirement ahead of World Cup

Stokes retired from ODIs last July, two months after being named England's test captain, and the reversal opens the door for him to play in their 50-overs World Cup title defence in October and November. "I am certain that every fan will enjoy seeing (Stokes) back in an England ODI shirt again," national selector Luke Wright said in a statement. He also hit a match-winning unbeaten 52 to lead England to the Twenty20 World Cup title last year, with victory over Pakistan in the final in Melbourne. White-ball coach Matthew Mott had said earlier that Stokes would be welcomed back into the ODI squad with open arms. England will play four T20s against New Zealand starting on Aug. 30, followed by a four-match ODI series from Sept. 8-15They face New Zealand in their World Cup opener on Oct. 5 in Ahmedabad, India.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja last month revealed he had approached the ICC about reducing penalties for slow over-rates in test matches after the governing body announced it had decided to soften sanctions. Khawaja said it was "really frustrating" for players to lose their match fees despite delivering entertaining matches. The hosts beat Australia by 49 runs in the fifth and final Ashes test at The Oval on Monday, securing a 2-2 series draw. Australia are third in the WTC standings, while England are placed fifth. Fired-up Stokes gives England hope of unlikely victory

Bairstow and Stokes looked bemused but Australia refused to withdraw the appeal and the right-hander trudged off to loud boos around the ground. Stokes, clearly fired up to play another match-winning innings as he did in the 2019 Ashes, went on the attack. Duckett and Stokes had batted cautiously after England resumed on 121-4, milking singles from the predominantly short-pitched bowling they faced. Stokes, on 39, was given out lbw to Mitchell Starc but the batsman reviewed immediately and replays showed the ball had hit the bat before striking his pad. Bairstow picked up one of the men and carried him off the field before dropping him to the ground outside the boundary markers. Ground staff cleared the powder and play resumed after a delay of around five minutes. "We are aware of protesters on the Lord’s Cricket Ground pitch today. Just Stop Oil protesters have disrupted other sporting events in England this year, including the Premiership Rugby final and the World Snooker Championship.

Stokes looked in discomfort when he took a catch to dismiss Ireland's Curtis Campher during England's 10-wicket win in the one-off test at Lord's. The 32-year-old has had knee trouble for some time now, restricting his seam bowling in test matches. My weight went on the inside of my knee, I hyper-extended it. It was one of those things, but I am 32 (on Sunday) so that probably explains it," Stokes said. "He obviously played that third seamer role and we used him with different plans at different times," Stokes said.

CNN —England won the T20 World Cup Final in sensational style, defeating Pakistan by five wickets in front of more than 80,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. As he did three years ago when England won the one-day World Cup, Stokes hit the winning runs and, with those runs, England became the first ever men’s side to hold the one day and T20 World Cup at the same time. I think the way we bowled, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, that’s what won us the game,” Stokes said afterwards, according to the BBC. William West/AFP/Getty ImagesPakistan batted first, after England won the toss and elected to bowl, but struggled to set a high total under a barrage of precise bowling. But England attacked off the final four overs and wrapped up the victory with six balls to spare.
