The stories of harvesters who’ve fallen from trees are numerous — some have had severe injuries and never walked again. Açaí harvesters expose themselves to the perils of the rainforest. Of those, at least 756,000 worked in what the International Labor Organization calls the worst forms of child labor, which includes “dangerous” conditions. Dozens of times a day, Lucas Oliveira climbs trees to bring down heavy bunches of açaí.

One of the biggest reasons we chose this particular name is because it wasn't popular, and now it's becoming trendy. AdvertisementAdvertisementJames Neave, head of data science at Adzuna, compares soft skills to people skills. Selker said that because soft skills can be observed, they can be measured, even if somewhat subjectively. Measuring soft skills can then become more like evaluating hard skills. AdvertisementAdvertisement"It really is a shift in thinking then to say, 'Can we observe these soft skills?" The pandemic meant that many Gen Zers, as they started their careers, didn't get the face-to-face interactions at work that might have allowed them to further develop their soft skills.

The U.S. is leading the way in artificial intelligence and generative AI jobs, according to data from the global job search platform Adzuna. Neave says generalist workers can build their AI skills, and boost their employability, in three steps:First, get to know the most popular AI tools. "Once you feel confident enough using it, seek out and find any way to use it in your day-to-day work," Neave says. It's a good idea to check with your manager about your company's policy on using AI in your work before doing so. And get a clear understanding of what you're allowed to input into generative AI tools and what you're not.

Close to half of Ukrainian refugees in Germany hope to stay
  + stars: | 2023-07-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BERLIN, July 12 (Reuters) - Of the more than 1 million Ukrainian refugees who came to Germany to escape the war, 44% would like to stay in the country, according to a survey published on Wednesday. This was higher than the 39% of Ukrainian refugees who said they were planning to stay in a previous survey published in late summer 2022. The reason given for this was high participation in integration and language courses, intended to boost employability. Half of the Ukrainian women who came to Germany as refugees after Russia's invasion of the country in early 2022 have at least one child. The survey, which includes the responses of 7,000 Ukrainian refugees living in Germany, is a joint effort of the DIW Berlin institute, the IAB, the ministry for migration and refugees as well as the federal institute for population research.

LONDON, June 13 (Reuters) - IKEA is training call centre workers to become interior design advisers as the Swedish furniture giant aims to offer more home improvement services and hand run-of-the-mill customer queries to an artificial intelligence bot called Billie. In April, IKEA expanded its interior design services to the UK and United States, after previous launches in parts of Europe, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere. In the UK, customers pay 25 pounds ($31.44) for a 45-60 minute interior design advice video call and suggested product list, and can pay 125 pounds for three workspace design consultations, a floorplan and 3D visuals. Sales by phone or video of products and services through Ingka's remote interior design channel accounted for 1.3 billion euros ($1.40 billion) of revenue in Ingka's 2022 financial year - 3.3% of the total. These virtual services require significant investment, she said, to ensure items' colours, textures and sizes are accurately reflected and to minimise returns.

Goldman Sachs estimates 300 million jobs could be affected by AI. A new report from Goldman Sachs reckons generative AI models like OpenAI's GPT-4 could impact 300 million full-time jobs globally. OpenAI's apparent willingness to roll out advanced AI models as soon as they're ready points more to a future where the tech replaces vast swathes of the workforce. History dictates that innovation with the power to disrupt and eliminate jobs typically paves the way for new fields, in time. A 2020 report from the World Economic Forum predicted AI will displace 85 million jobs by 2025, and create 97 million new ones.
Some employees are "career cushioning" to protect themselves in case they are made redundant. "They're using 'career cushioning' as an insurance policy to set themselves up for success should they need to in the future." In professional life, "career cushioning" means workers will start to look for other jobs while still in their current roles. Cushioning not only gives employees professional security but can also soften the emotional blow of being laid off. For a lot of people, career cushioning is an exercise in building confidence, LinkedIn's Davies said.

A long-term illness crisis is threatening the UK economy

Leon Neal/Getty ImagesLONDON — Along with sky-high inflation and energy costs, a Brexit-related trade tailspin and a recession in progress, the U.K. economy is being hammered by record numbers of workers reporting long-term sickness. Unlike other major economies, recent U.K. data shows no sign that these lost workers are returning to the labor market, even as inflation and energy costs exert huge pressure on household finances. The U.K. avoided mass job losses during the Covid-19 pandemic as the government's furlough program subsidized businesses to retain workers. "The U.K. was particularly vulnerable because of austerity — NHS waiting lists were rising sharply, and performance/satisfaction was falling sharply, well before the pandemic," Portes said. However, the report noted that this isn't a recent phenomenon, and the waiting list has been growing rapidly since 2012.watch now

Cushioning not only gives employees professional security but can also soften the emotional blow of being laid off. After years working for nonprofits, I am nearing age 60 without a pension or retirement savings. While financial help is only "supposed to" flow from parent to child in North America, that hasn't been the case for me. Or rather it would be, if I didn't have a daughter with whom I have an exceptional relationship. Much has been written lately about how only those millennials who can go to the bank of mom or dad will ever buy homes. As we've navigated our way through this mutual-aid arrangement, my daughter has persuaded me to stop doing the math.
This article is part of the "Financing a Sustainable Future" series exploring how companies take steps to set and fund sustainable goals. A LinkedIn survey found just one in 67 paid jobs in the US offered remote work in 2020, and that number this year grew to one in six. The labor shortage is compelling companies to boost pay. Low-complexity jobs will inevitably be automated, given the acute labor shortage, and the real opportunity will be in training people to take on higher-order responsibilities, which will allow enterprises to scale business purposefully. Remote work means more people otherwise limited by their circumstances — like caregiving adults, students, and people with disabilities or in rural areas — can now be included in the nontraditional American workforce and gig economy.
