Before kids, I couldn't figure out why parents would buy light up shoes or character clothing for their children. I was not prepared for the joy character items bring my daughterMy daughter loves clothes and gets excited when any new item gets delivered. But the day her new Ariel bathing suit arrived was a level of excitement that I've never seen before. A few months before the Ariel bathing suit, we were in Target. It's why I subsequently sought out an Ariel bathing suit because I knew it would make her over the moon.

But after visiting 17 countries, there's one little luxury I can't go without when flying: checking a bag. I find that my carry-on bag is practically tied to me while I'm in the airport, which can become annoying. Avoiding this anxiety-inducing exercise and not rushing to board is a little luxury worth the price of checking a bag. Opting for a large checked bag means I can pack everything I want to bring on my tripI can pack tons of different outfits in my checked bag. But if you ask me, checking a bag is a relatively easy way to have a better travel experience.

AdvertisementI think it's common for new college graduates to want to wait for their dream job or something they're passionate about to come along. That's not realistic and, in my experience, typically means their parents still have to support them. My dream job was to work for a popular Southern lifestyle magazine, but the job would have started as a six-month unpaid internship. Had my parents supported me through this, I wouldn't have become self-sufficient as quickly, and it wouldn't have set a great boundary. AdvertisementEven though it meant lots of trade-offs for what I wanted to do after college, I'm glad my parents made it clear that they wouldn't financially support me after I graduated.

After my kids were born, my love for online grocery ordering grew even more. While I used to use a grocery delivery service nearly every week, I only use it in a pinch now. On top of that, there can be things like pick-up fees, service fees, delivery charges, and tips if you use a grocery delivery service. All of this means that I end up having to go to the grocery store anyway, usually stressed because I was counting on the grocery delivery service to save time. Using a grocery delivery service can save time and energy, but it also comes with added costs and, oftentimes, frustration.

Instead, I scour the internet and local consignment sales to find clothes secondhand and then resell them after they're done wearing them. Being the default parent often gets a bad rap. It's a lot of physical and mental work and can be stressful, and I often see people complaining about being the default parent. Doing all of the things a default parent does can easily fill a full day. AdvertisementI'm nearing four years as the default parent, and quite frankly, I excel at it. The tradeoffs have been worth it, and I feel fortunate that I had a say in choosing to be the default parent.

There's a long standing debate about whether people should take their kids to a bar or if they should leave them at home. Pre-kids, I believed kids should stay homeI used to be in the camp that kids should stay home and that bars should just be for adults. Elliott Harrell didn't understand why parents brought their kids to happy hour until she had her own kids. Courtesy Elliott HarrellI try to pick spots where my kids will disrupt patrons the leastEven though I support parents taking kids to bars, I do think that parents should consider which spots will be better for kids. Taking our kids to happy hour is a way for us to get a change of scenery and be social without having the struggle of finding a babysitter.

Most people know me as Elliott Harrell, but that wasn't my actual name until recently. Initially, I thought I'd use Elliott Harrell socially and my given legal name when mandated and that everything would be fine. Elliott Harrell changed her name after having her second child. My name was legally changed over three months ago and since then I've been working on getting things like my license, passport, and even my Costco card changed over. AdvertisementEven though I'm still in the depths of paperwork hell, I'm so glad I decided to move forward with the process.

On a recent work trip to New York City, I had dinner with my boss. It was a far cry from what work dinners used to look like when I traveled. My first business trip was a sales conference in San Diego in 2009. For the next 10 years or so, every time I took a business trip, I reveled in all of the late-night activities. Swapping business dinners for lunches still means I get dedicated face time with people, but it also means that I can enjoy a break from parenthood while I'm away.

Getting a traditional Mother's Day gift means I am still doing chores that day. But when it comes to celebrating Mother's Day, there's just one thing I want, and it's not a bath bomb, candle, or picture frame. For Mother's Day, I really just want time by myself away from my girls. Mother's Day is about showing appreciation for everything moms do, but it's also a day meant for reflecting on motherhood. Having time away for Mother's Day would remind me that despite the endless chores and messes and tears, being a mom really is the best.
