The James Webb telescope captured an image of M51, a galaxy 27 million light-years away. An image of M51 – also known as NGC 5194 or the Whirlpool Galaxy – taken by the James Webb Telescope. NASA/ESA/JWSTAstronomers hope the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will shed new light on how stars form in galaxies other than Milky Way. Before Webb came along, the Hubble telescope provided a glimpse of star formation in galaxies such as M51. Dark red regions show the cosmic dust that permeates the M51 galaxy in this zoomed in image from the James Webb telescope.

Astronomers have spotted a "once-in-a-lifetime" comet shaped like the Millennium Falcon. The comet will make its closest approach to the sun next year, just weeks after a solar eclipse. The comet, known as Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, abruptly brightened 100-fold on July 20 as plumes of debris and ice were blasted off it into space. While it may be possible to see the comet with the naked eye, Miles advised using binoculars. A decades-old mysteryAstronomers aren't sure exactly why Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, which orbits the sun every 71 years, has brightened so drastically in recent weeks.

RFE/RL's Serhiy Nuzhnenko was one of the first photojournalists to enter the town of Bucha after Russian troops rolled in — and came back the year after to see it transformed. A main street in Bucha photographed on March 1, 2022, during a pause in fighting, and then again more than a year later in May 2023. Serhiy Nuzhnenko/RadioSvoboda.org/RFE/RL/InsiderHe returned to take photographs of the exact same sites where he had captured the horrors of the war a year earlier. City officials said more than 450 bodies of civilians were recovered from the Bucha after Russia's invasion, according to Politico.
