Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Collars, Captured by Camera

In the soft stillness of a museum gallery, you could forget that the photographs on the walls around you were shot under time pressure. Six minutes each, the photographer Elinor Carucci told me. The photographs, on view at the Jewish Museum in Manhattan, are haunting, almost three-dimensional images of collars and necklaces that belonged to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court.

Every year, researchers in economics are awarded the Nobel Prize, alongside a hefty sum in winnings. All you have to do is bag a Nobel Prize. Franco Modigliani, an MIT professor who nabbed the Nobel in economics in 1985 , got about $225,000 in winnings. But, ultimately, he wanted to spend his winnings according to his own research on people's saving and spending habits. So when he was asked how he'd spend what was, in 2017 dollars, around $1.1 million in winnings, Thaler told reporters : "I will try to spend it as irrationally as possible."

‘Madonna’ Review: The Material on the Girl

Madonna in a downtown Manhattan loft, December 1982. Photo: Peter Noble/Redferns/Getty ImagesIn February 1927, the British novelist Elinor Glyn published a short story in Cosmopolitan magazine that would define the then-nascent culture of celebrity. Glyn’s story explored the concept of It: the mysterious, ineffable, possibly magical quality that stars and other screen luminaries have and ordinary people don’t. Sex appeal, personal charisma, beauty—all of these contribute to It, but It is much more. And so not only a star, but an ideology of stardom, was born.

STOCKHOLM, Oct 9 (Reuters) - American economic historian Claudia Goldin won the 2023 Nobel economics prize for her work examining wage inequality between men and women, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said on Monday. "This year's Laureate in the Economic Sciences, Claudia Goldin, provided the first comprehensive account of women's earnings and labour market participation through the centuries," the prize-giving body said in a statement. Goldin, who in 1990 became the first woman to be tenured at the Harvard economics department, is only the third woman to win the Nobel economics prize. "Claudia Goldin's discoveries have vast societal implications," said Randi Hjalmarsson, member of the Economic Prize committee. As with the other Nobel prizes, the vast majority of the economics awards have gone to men.

CLSA thinks China could emerge as the second-largest artificial intelligence market, and the firm is eyeing a tranche of stocks to play the growth. "While the USA is a strong leader, China is putting up a fight and we believe it will become the world's second-largest AI market with over 6% share of global US$1tn AI spending by 2026," the note said. For exposure to the future AI growth in China, Leung highlighted Baidu and Alibaba , while calling out Tencent as the premier play — a trio of stocks the firm dubbed "BAT." "We believe Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent are the best positioned to lead China's AI innovation," Leung said. All three companies are the dominant developers of large language models in China, Leung added, and already have a tight grip over the necessary data and IT to grow further.

GLASGOW, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen maintained his stranglehold on track cycling's sprint discipline as he made it five world titles in succession in the individual event on Monday. Having powered the Dutch to team sprint gold earlier in the meet and, with the keirin to come on Tuesday, he could leave Glasgow having matched the record 14 world titles of French sprint king Arnaud Tournant. Host nation Britain also enjoyed another impressive day at the Chris Hoy Velodrome to top the medals table. He has won five sprint titles in a row, five of the last six in team sprint and three of the last three in keirin. "My legs are still screaming," Barker said after adding the madison to the team pursuit gold she won last week.

The Art of Being a Flâneur

I followed the river toward the Uffizi Gallery where I stopped, enchanted by the scene below. It’s “a search for the delectable, delicious, almost gustatory delights of the moment,” as they put it. Other times, an object or architectural detail that piques your interest — a gate, a gargoyle — provides a portal to another time. Stories of vanished ages can be triggered by a single stone, then explored back home through books and websites. Being in a big city among so many strangers can be at turns exhilarating and disturbing.

The findings in the ambitious Zoonomia Project identified parts of the genome functionally important in people and other mammals and showed how certain mutations can cause disease. The project revealed the genetics of uncommon mammalian traits like hibernation and showed how the sense of smell varies widely. The researchers said the findings on hibernation genetics could inform human therapeutics, critical care and long-distance space flight. The most primitive species was the venomous burrowing insect-eater Hispaniola solenodon, closely related to mammals alive during the dinosaur age. In terms of human differences from other mammals, the study pointed to regions associated with developmental and neurological genes.
I’m about to start Rebecca Makkai’s “I Have Some Questions for You.” I just finished “Still Pictures,” by Janet Malcolm. Yesterday afternoon I read a graphic memoir, “Gender Queer,” by Maia Kobabe, the most banned book in the country right now. Books I’ve finished but still in the pile: “Ms. A train is good but how often am I on a train these days? So maybe the best place for reading is sitting on my balcony overlooking the ocean (I know, right?).
NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - A lawyer for Juan Orlando Hernandez, the former Honduran president who is facing U.S. drugs and weapons charges, on Tuesday accused the Central American country's current government of setting up obstacles to his defense. In a hearing on Hernandez's case in Manhattan federal court, defense lawyer Raymond Colon said individuals in Honduras he was hoping to speak with were "being intimidated," without providing evidence. Gerardo Torres, Honduras' deputy foreign minister, denied Colon's claims. "I don't know where that accusation against the government of Honduras comes from," Torres told Reuters. Honduran President Xiomara Castro, a leftist who replaced Hernandez last year after beating a candidate from his right-leaning National Party, has pledged to tackle corruption.

For many people, the best thing to do is to leave a narcissist and cut them out of their life. If this isn't possible there are some tactics you can use to stop the argument escalating. If the narcissist is physically abusive, the tiniest inconvenience can cause them to throw things or even strike their partner. According to Greenberg, a narcissist will not be comfortable with the idea that they started an argument over something trivial, so it's best to just move on. Remember to put yourself firstMost experts believe being in a romantic relationship with a narcissist is an emotionally draining, damaging process.
