CNN —Syrian armed rebels have entered Aleppo just three days into their surprise offensive, marking the first time they have set foot in the country’s second largest city since government forces recaptured the city in 2016. Rebel forces launched a surprise attack this week, sweeping through several villages outside the city and reigniting conflict that had been largely static for years. “Our forces have begun entering the city of Aleppo,” said the newly formed rebel coalition, the Military Operations Command. Earlier Friday, the rebel group said it seized control of the Syrian government’s Military Scientific Research Center on the outskirts of Aleppo city after “intense clashes with the regime forces and Iranian militias.” It later shared a video of Syrian regime tanks leaving Aleppo as rebel forces advanced. Syrian opposition fighters enter the village of Anjara, west of Aleppo, on Thursday.

— As President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration solidifies its plan for mass deportations, local law enforcement agencies are preparing to ramp up a controversial program that allows them to partner with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It authorizes ICE to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the ability to perform certain functions of an immigration officer. According to ICE, as of May 2024, law enforcement agencies in 21 states participated in the program. Other critics have also said the 287(g) program merely serves as a political messaging tool for conservative sheriffs. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits the use of city resources in immigration enforcement.

Nordstrom on Tuesday beat Wall Street's quarterly sales expectations, as revenue grew about 4% year over year from shoppers buying clothing, shoes and activewear at both the company's namesake department store and its off-price chain. Compared with the second quarter, women's apparel, shoes and men's apparel sales in the fiscal third quarter also grew sequentially. Comparable sales increased 4% across Nordstrom's two brands, its namesake and its off-price chain, Nordstrom Rack. That easily topped analysts' expectations for 0.7% gains in comparable sales, according to StreetAccount. Nordstrom's sales growth, while modest, is notable at a time when sales of discretionary merchandise and the luxury category have been under pressure.

CNN —Israel and Lebanon have accepted a US-backed proposal to end the 13-month border conflict that spiraled into an all-out war in September with Hezbollah. What the deal entailsThe deal stipulates a 60-day cessation of hostilities, which negotiators have described as the foundation of a lasting truce. On September 27, Israel killed Hezbollah’s long-time leader Nasrallah in a massive attack in the southern suburbs of Beirut, upending the truce talks. Since October 2023, Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel have killed 47 Israeli civilians and 31 security forces in Israel. Palestinians in Gaza are unlikely to find respite if a Lebanon deal is signed, according to a regional analyst.

Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden at almost every turn on the handling of the US southern border, as the state grappled with multiple border surges. Abbott described the upcoming border actions as a coordinated effort between border states and Washington. Texas officials and federal officials have historically worked together on the US-Mexico border. Texas state officials tout the work of their operation, arguing it served as a deterrent, and federal officials cite Biden’s executive action that levied harsher consequences for border crossers. “Texas has really been a lab for how mass round-ups of immigrants would work and how you can practically do it,” said Kristin Etter, the director of policy and legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council.

CNN —Where the high hills of the occupied West Bank tumble into the Jordan valley, half a dozen heavy Israeli diggers pound the ancient rocks around the Palestinian village of Bardala. Such evictions are common in the West Bank, according to the United Nations. During a visit to Israel in 2017, the former governor of Arkansas told reporters: “There is no such thing as a West Bank. The eviction notice Israeli officials handed to a Palestinian farmer near the village of Bardala in the occupied West Bank, ordering him to leave his land. The hard reality in Bardala, as elsewhere in the occupied West Bank, is that even before Trump’s approaching inauguration, the Palestinian state had become a distant dream.

In a year of landmark elections, my country’s presidential vote last month flew under the radar. And perhaps with good reason: Uruguay’s balloting was marked by unexciting candidates and their lackluster attempts to entice undecided voters to the polls. An uneventful vote seems preferable to the deep polarization that has surrounded presidential elections over the past year in countries like El Salvador, Argentina, Venezuela and even the United States. And young Uruguayans are afflicted by many problems. As it did in other countries, the Covid-19 pandemic left Uruguay in the grip of a mental-health crisis that hit this group hard.

The more Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is cast as an international pariah, the more many Israelis appear to embrace him. The arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court on Thursday for Mr. Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, on accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip spurred a wave of outrage and condemnation across Israel’s political spectrum. “It is embarrassing to see Netanyahu and Gallant in the same place as Muammar el-Qaddafi, Slobodan Milosevic, Ratko Mladic and several African dictators,” wrote Sima Kadmon, a political columnist and longtime Netanyahu critic, in the Friday editions of the popular Yediot Ahronot newspaper. Still, she added, “the allegations of anti-Israel-ism are understandable. Perhaps even antisemitism.”Despite deep domestic polarization, analysts said, most Israelis were likely to rally around Mr. Netanyahu’s repudiation of the court’s decision, which he denounced as “antisemitic" for “falsely accusing” the democratically elected prime minister of Israel.

CNN —A high-ranking member of a Mexican drug cartel who allegedly faked his own death and has been living in California under a fake name is now facing federal charges, the US Justice Department announced Thursday. He also allegedly kidnapped two members of the Mexican Navy as part of an attempt to release his mother-in-law, El Mencho’s wife, after her arrest by Mexican authorities. El Mencho then allegedly helped Gutierrez-Ochoa fake his death to evade Mexican law enforcement by telling his associates that he had killed Gutierrez-Ochoa for lying. The Justice Department charged El Mencho in 2022 with leading the effort to manufacture and distribute fentanyl for importation into the US. He has not been arrested, and the State Department is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction.

Deportation often hinges on diplomacy – and has been a steep challenge for the US when dealing with countries where there are frosty relations. Taken together, it’s a return to a hardline approach meant to get countries receiving deportees to comply and attempt to curb migration. But sources close to and involved in discussions argue they’ve identified the incentives and pressure points to have countries cooperate. The executive actions and reviews underway by the Trump team include the return of the program informally known as “remain in Mexico,” which requires migrants to stay in Mexico during their immigration proceedings in the US. “A second-term Trump administration will expand ‘burden-sharing’ deals with Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that cut off pathways to the US for asylum-seekers.

Law enforcement missed critical opportunities to prevent a 2022 mass shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado, a pair of lawsuits filed over the weekend allege. The suits claim that the massacre at Club Q in Colorado Springs, which killed five people and injured at least 19, could have been averted if authorities had enforced Colorado’s red flag law. The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners and former El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder are named as defendants in the suits, which accuse them of negligence and, in the case of the deceased victims, wrongful death. A spokesperson for El Paso County declined to comment on the allegations, citing the pending litigation. The El Paso County defendants “willfully and wantonly ignored the shooter’s warning signs,” the legal documents say.

CNN —Victims and family members of those killed in the 2022 mass shooting at the LGBTQIA+ Club Q in Colorado Springs have sued the El Paso County Board of Commissioners and others, alleging authorities could have prevented the shooting if they had enforced the state’s “red flag law” against the gunman. One was filed by the families of the dead victims and five victims themselves – a second was filed by Barrett Hudson, who sustained seven gunshot wounds. “The shooter had a history of violent threats and behavior that clearly warranted intervention,” the suits say. The suits allege that, despite the shooter’s “history of violent threats and behavior that clearly warranted prevention … El Paso County law enforcement failed to invoke the Red Flag Law, in light of policies against its use.”In 2019, a year before the law came into effect, the Board of El Paso County Commissioners approved a resolution to designate the county a so-called Second Amendment Sanctuary.
