MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Losing a game at the Basketball World Cup, the U.S. national team said, was quite the wake-up call. The Americans turned words into actions and handed the Italians their worst loss in a global tournament — the World Cup or the Olympics — in nearly 45 years. “They created very good shots and they made them.”It was the quarterfinal round where it all went wrong for the U.S. at the World Cup four years ago in China. Italy had beaten the U.S. only twice in 14 previous tries at the senior men’s national level, both times at the world championships — which FIBA now calls the World Cup. … Guaranteed no worse than eighth place, this will be Italy's best World Cup showing since finishing sixth in 1998.

Republican lawmakers resuscitated the bill after a previous attempt failed at the committee level. youthIf the measure becomes law, Louisiana would join 17 states that have enacted bans or severe restrictions this year on access to transition care for minors, all part of a broader effort by conservative lawmakers to regulate the lives of transgender or gender-nonconforming young people. The state has an estimated 4,000 transgender teenagers, according to a report published last year by the Williams Institute, an L.G.B.T.Q. Under the terms of the bill, young people already receiving this treatment would be allowed to temporarily continue it to avoid an abrupt halt, but that window would close at the end of 2023. The bill, he said at the time, “was going to become law whether or not I signed it or vetoed it.”

Mike Edwards believes that markets haven't fully priced in the upside from China's reopening. In the long run, Edwards said that China can maintain its global presence even without the US. The end of China's zero-COVID policy and the country's subsequent economic reopening has undoubtedly been one of the biggest tailwinds for markets so far this year. But while investors have welcomed this news with open arms, Mike Edwards — deputy chief investment officer at Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers — doesn't believe that they've realized yet just how much upside the reopening of the Chinese economy could bring the stock market. Europe's outperformance over the US so far this year can, in part, be attributed to its significantly larger exposure to the Chinese economy.
