CNN —By now, the famed photographer Gregory Crewdson’s well-oiled, large-scale shoots are well documented. Gregory CrewdsonCrewdson nods to the Hitchcock classic “Vertigo” and the female lead’s doubled self in this photograph from his most recent series, “Eveningside,” from 2021-22. For the series, the photographer returned to Adams, Massachusetts, and transformed vacant storefronts, revisiting locations from earlier series. With Crewdson’s work, he added: “It’s completely staged, and every detail is thought through. It’s that moment — not the final picture — that he’s always chasing, he reiterated on the call.

Much of 20th-century classical music owes a deep thanks to jazz. And while on paper, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s concert at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday night was organized for a festival at the hall, Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice, the subtext was American jazz. All three of the composers on the program (Stravinsky, Weill and Gershwin) loved and, to one extent or another, made references to the style in their music. Weill, who left Europe for the United States after the fall of the Weimar Republic, was also steeped in jazz. The orchestra staked out rhythmic details with crystalline precision and saw each phrase through with patience and a rich sound.

An AI-generated image of the late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole is currently showing up as the top search result on Google when you search his name. Business Insider searched for "Israel Kamakawiwoʻole" on Sunday evening and found the AI-generated images continuing to appear as the top search results. Noah Giansiracusa, a professor at Bentley University, pointed out on X that the AI-generated images show Kamakawiwoʻole playing a guitar. Google told 404 Media a day later that it had removed the AI-generated image from search results.

“Is It Good Enough to Fool My Gallerist?” David Salle, one of America’s most thoughtful painters, hoped an A.I. “We are sending the machine to art school,” Salle quipped, before expounding on the principles of light, shadow, depth and volume that good painting requires. Safe to say that nobody would mistake this image for a Salle painting. Salle’s style has changed over the years, which made capturing his essence a little more challenging for an algorithm. Put through the blender of a machine, Salle’s art becomes a remix: a pastiche of pastiches.

Anne Hartley’s brick house in Ebony, Va., overlooks windswept fields, a Methodist church, a general store and the intersection of two country roads, a pastoral setting that evokes an Edward Hopper painting or a faded postcard from the South. Now this scene is being threatened, Ms. Hartley said, by a plan to build what every small American town seems to have: a Dollar General. A descendant of one of Ebony’s founding families, Ms. Hartley says the discount store — which would be built next to her home — will create traffic problems in the area, with people drawn to the brand’s signature yellow sign and its aisles filled with inexpensive food and household staples. Beyond the store itself, Ms. Hartley and many others with ties to Ebony think it will open the door to additional development that will spoil the character of their tiny, rural community of about 230 people. The name of their website and the rallying cry for their campaign against the Dollar General is “Keep Ebony Country.”
