WASHINGTON — The White House on Monday announced it is designating 31 technology hubs in an effort to improve American competitiveness in the technology sector. The hubs will be able to compete for $40 million to $75 million each in grants, the White House said. The move was authorized under the CHIPS and Science Act, the White House said, which President Joe Biden frequently touts as a highlight of his economic agenda. It also authorized $10 billion to invest in technology hubs nationwide, according to the administration. The hubs focus on a wide range of technological areas, including quantum computing, artificial intelligence, clean energy, medicine and biotechnology.

When COVID forced kids into remote school, the city of Las Vegas learned many couldn't get online. A grant helped officials build a private 5G network that connected hundreds of students for free. "So we successfully hooked up several hundred students onto our private 5G network, which gave them connectivity from their homes through the city's network to their schools." This would be supplemented by commercial carriers such as Verizon and AT&T in areas where the private network wouldn't reach. Looking ahead, Ahmed sees many use cases for a private 5G network and expects them to grow in popularity as cities harness the power of artificial intelligence to create safer environments.

Cities and regions left behind by bygone industries can now apply for funding to revitalize jobs. The Biden administration is opening up applications for its Recompete Pilot Program. Under that program, a handful of "distressed communities" can receive at least $20 million. It's called the Recompete Pilot Program, and it's meant to pump funds into economically distressed areas. According to research from Timothy J. Bartik for the Brookings Institute, nearly a sixth of the country's population lives in distressed communities.
