Sherman Lin, chairman and CEO of Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation attributed the strong gains on the Taiwan Weighted Index to "the AI revolution." So it means, actually, Taiwan plays [a] very crucial role in AI supply chain and also the semiconductor industry," said Lin. Taiwan also held nearly 80% market share in extreme ultraviolet generation processes, such as 7-nanometer and more advanced technology, said TrendForce. A top Dutch government minister said he's confident the country's coveted chip-equipment maker ASML will remain in the Netherlands following threats from the company to move its operations abroad. Steven van Weyenberg, the Netherlands' finance minister, told CNBC's Karen Tso on Thursday that he isn't worried by ASML's statements threatening to leave the country. The company makes extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) machines, which are critical to the semiconductor industry for manufacturing integrated circuits. "I think many people, many countries would love to welcome ASML, but I think they're strongly embedded in the Netherlands," Van Weyenberg told CNBC Thursday. "I'm very optimistic about ASML's future and that it will be within the Netherlands," he said.

Chip stocks fell on Wednesday after ASML, a key developer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, said that bookings fell by 61% sequentially during the first quarter, a steeper drop than investors had expected. During trading on Wednesday, AMD's stock fell over 4%, Nvidia shares fell about 3%, Intel shares fell nearly 2% and Qualcomm was off 2%. But the biggest drop affected chip technology firm Arm , which was trading nearly 10% lower on Wednesday. ASML fell over 8% on a day when the entire S&P 500 index was only down less than 1%. ASML also said that it expected that government subsidies for chip factories, such as the CHIPS Act in the U.S., would boost its sales.

Intel shares fell 4% at one point in extended trading on Tuesday after the company revealed long-awaited financials for its semiconductor manufacturing business, commonly called the foundry business, in a SEC filing. Intel said its foundry business recorded an operating loss of $7 billion in 2023 on sales of $18.9 billion. That's a wider loss than the $5.2 billion Intel reported in its foundry business in 2022 on $25.7 billion in sales. "Intel Foundry is going to drive considerable earnings growth for Intel over time. 2024 is the trough for foundry operating losses," Gelsinger said on a call with investors on Tuesday.

Investors are debating the recovery path for the chip industry which has been hit by a slowdown in demand for electronics such as smartphones and PCs. "We had projected an upturn in the second half of the year and as we've highlighted here we're no longer expecting that upturn," JSR CEO Eric Johnson told a news conference. Operating profit was 3.4 billion yen in the second quarter, following a loss of 6.1 billion yen three months earlier. Production of the current Bolt is set to end in December, but GM has said a revamped version is on the way. General Motors surprised investors – and EV fans – when it said in July that the little Chevrolet Bolt EV will be revamped, rather than killed off entirely at the end of 2023 as originally planned. Launched in late 2016 and originally aimed at the ride-sharing market, the Bolt had never sold as well as GM had originally hoped. That sales surge is a big part of why GM decided to keep the Bolt around.

Domestic equipment manufacturers, such as toolmaker Naura (002371.SZ) and etching equipment maker AMEC, are winning a much higher proportion of tenders from Chinese foundries than in previous years, as chipmakers race to replace foreign-made equipment with domestically made alternatives, research showed. "There is definitely huge progress happening in the Chinese semiconductor equipment space, as reflected in the strong revenue growth metrics," he said. The Huatai Securities report revealed that for the first eight months of 2023, only one tender for lithography equipment was awarded to a Chinese company, out of many bids. "Local players still lack capability to supply a full set of equipment, such as EUV," said Nori Chiou, investment director at White Oak Capital, saying Chinese manufacturers are focused on covering mature node equipment. "It’s a long way to go to see advanced semiconductor equipment made in China."

Bank of America is confident in semiconductor equipment maker ASML Holding as a long-term play despite the company's mixed earnings report. The Dutch technology firm reported slightly weaker-than-expected net sales for third quarter and a net profit that was about in line with an LSEG consensus forecast. Those figures — €6.67 billion for net sales and €1.89 billion in net sales — represent quarter-over-quarter declines. ☆ GM postpones electric truck production

CNN —General Motors is putting off adding a second factory for production of its electric pickups until late 2025, the automaker announced Tuesday. But GM had planned to start producing the electric pickups at an additional Michigan factory, Orion Assembly just north of Detroit, as well. Instead, when those electric vehicles go out of production at the end of this year, the factory will not shift quickly to making the trucks. General MotorsGM’s decision will result in fewer electric pickups being built next year but the automaker declined to discuss the extent of a reduction. GM had announced, in 2022, that it would spend $4 billion to convert Orion Assembly to make the electric trucks.

The latest "nanoimprint lithography" system is Canon's challenge to Dutch firm ASML , which dominates the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machine space. ASML's tools are required to make the most advanced chips such as those in the latest Apple iPhones which are manufactured by Taiwan's TSMC . For context, the A17 Pro chip inside Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, is a 3nm semiconductor. Both TSMC and South Korea's Samsung, the two biggest advanced chip manufacturing companies, are aiming to make 2nm chips in 2025.

The effort in Ireland is Intel’s first attempt at high-volume manufacturing using EUV technology. Beyond its existing facilities in Ireland, Intel plans to build a big chip complex in Germany and semiconductor assembly and test facility in Poland. The new factory will double Intel’s manufacturing space in Ireland, where it is one of the country’s largest multinational employers with 4,900 people, around half its European workforce.

☆ Chipmaker ASML to set up base in Japan's Hokkaido to support new Rapidus plant

An ASML spokesperson said the company will have a customer support team for Rapidus, but could not immediately confirm staff numbers. Nikkei, which first reported the news, said that 50 ASML engineers will install an ASML "EUV" machine on a prototype line in Chitose City, Hokkaido. "We always have engineers that support our systems in our customers' fabs," the ASML spokesperson said, referring to customers' factories. TSMC, Samsung, Intel and memory chip specialists SK Hynix and Micron currently manufacture using ASML's EUV tools. The Nikkei report said ASML is also expanding its existing support base for TSMC, which is building a major plant in Kumamoto in Japan.
