Speaking at Reuters Events Automotive USA 2023 conference, Ganesh Iyer, chief executive officer of Nio USA, said the company is considering "any kind of partnerships" in North America. Nio also needs to build infrastructure before bringing electric vehicles to North America, he said. Nio sees an "immersive user experience" as a differentiator for the brand, Iyer said.

Nio's ET5 stands on display at the Central China International Auto Show on May 25, 2023, in Wuhan, China. Chinese electric carmaker Nio plans to cut 10% of its workforce amid "fierce competition," CEO William Li said Friday. This is a tough but necessary decision against the fierce competition." Like many Chinese electric vehicle startups, Nio has been hit by weak consumer sentiment in the world's second-largest economy, stiff competition and a price war kicked off by Elon Musk's Tesla. Nio first resisted any price declines, but ultimately carried one out in June.

But the company has started assessing dealers in key European markets, two of the sources said, after the company's president last month said sales in Europe were not meeting expectations. One person said Nio had found that Europe had its "peculiarities", without elaborating, and that the company was planning to expand into more European countries. Its Firefly project, however, is evaluating its channel model for Europe, including direct sales, agency or dealers. Nio, which ranks ninth by sales volume among manufacturers of electric and hybrid cars in China, does not break down its sales in Europe. Nio does not use dealers in China but instead relies on a direct sales model similar to one pioneered by Tesla (TSLA.O).

I was in town for an event by Chinese electric car company Nio , which was vying with Huawei's big Connect conference for literal space and attention in a week of tech news. Electric car manufacturers are abuzz In the world of electric cars alone, Baidu -backed startup Jidu launched its car on Tuesday afternoon; Xpeng also unveiled its new G9 electric SUV. Nio, which had just wrapped its fifth car release in four months the prior week, launched a smartphone on Thursday. [1/2] A Nio ET5 electric vehicle is displayed at the Chinese EV maker's showroom in Shanghai, China, February 3, 2023. The investigation launched on Wednesday will determine if punitive tariffs are warranted to protect EU producers from what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described as a "flood" of cheaper Chinese EV imports. "It is a naked protectionist act that will seriously disrupt and distort the global automotive industry and supply chain, including the EU, and will have a negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations." The probe, initiated by the European Commission and not from any industry complaint, will further irritate a tense relationship with China partly strained by trade and investment imbalances. Alternatively, punitive tariffs on imports from China could accelerate Chinese EV makers' plans to build in Europe, analysts said, raising competition for domestic carmakers. "Volkswagen could gain from lower mass-market competition, but is the most exposed ... premium OEMs ...face the risk of retaliation and might see their China-export plans sent awry," he added. By 1210 GMT, the STOXX Europe 600 Auto (.SXAP) index was down 1.46%, while the broader market was steady. BMW, which exports the iX3 from China and plans to export the Mini from 2024, fell 2.08%, with Mercedes-Benz down 1.56% and Volkswagen down 1.83%. Stocks of carmakers Renault and Stellantis, which are less exposed to the Chinese market than their German counterparts, saw smaller dips of 1.33% and 0.81% respectively.

Here are the big questions about the move, which led to a slide in shares of Chinese EV makers on Thursday:WHY EXPORT TO EUROPE AND HOW MUCH HAS IT GROWN? That is mainly due to Beijing's decade-old industry promotion policy of incentives and subsidies that enabled China to become the world's biggest EV market and control the global EV supply chain, including raw materials. The single largest exporter is Tesla, accounting for 40% of China's EV exports between January and April, U.S. thinktank the Center for Strategic and International Studies says. Chinese state subsidies for electric and hybrid vehicles totalled $57 billion between 2016 and 2022, consultants AlixPartners have estimated. It paid out nearly $15 billion to encourage EV purchases through 2021, China Merchants Bank International has estimated.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT URSULA VON DER LEYEN"Global markets are now flooded with cheaper electric cars. "So I can announce today that the Commission is launching an anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles coming from China. UK TRADE MINISTER KEMI BADENOCH"I think it just highlights the difficulties that all countries are having with the supply chain for electric vehicles. "China's apparent advantage and cost-competitive imports are already impacting European auto makers' domestic market share, with a massive surge in electric vehicle imports in recent years. At the same time, the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is also a game-changer in the electric vehicle value chain.

Western automakers are rattled, with Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Peugeot-to-Fiat carmaker Stellantis (STLAM.MI), warning last month of an "invasion" of cheap Chinese EVs in Europe. But Chinese brands are likely to struggle to sell cars in Europe as cheaply as at home. CONSUMER TRUSTWhile some Chinese brands, such as MG, are well known in Europe, others like XPeng (9868.HK) and Nio need to build trust. Surveys indicate most potential EV buyers in Europe do not recognise Chinese brands. But among those aware of Chinese brands, 1% or fewer would consider buying one.

REUTERS/Aly SongSHANGHAI, March 28 (Reuters) - Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio Inc (9866.HK) began trial operation on Tuesday of faster, more efficient battery swapping stations in China in its push to make battery swapping a viable alternative to rival EV makers' rapid-charging technology. Tesla's (TSLA.O) rapid-charging Supercharger allows EV users to top up vehicles to a range of 200 miles in 15 minutes. Rival Tesla has dismissed battery swapping as "riddled with problems and not suitable for widescale use". Nio, which has set a target of 2,300 battery swapping stations globally by year-end, had 1,323 in operation as of March 23, Shen said. It aims for 900 of the latest power swap stations to be operating this year, he added.
Goldman Sachs says the development of electric vehicles — and the companies involved in this — are set to see "considerable growth" through 2030. According to Goldman, this EV ecosystem includes auto manufacturers, battery makers, software developers, and companies involved in charging infrastructure and power semiconductors. "We think these companies should be able to tap [Inflation Reduction Act] opportunities as the battery market becomes more concentrated," Goldman wrote. Upside of 120% Goldman is also buy-rated Chinese EV maker Nio and gives it gives massive potential upside — among the highest of all of its stock picks in the report. "We see risk-reward for the stock as skewed to the upside," Goldman added.
As electric cars become increasingly popular, a new manufacturing technique that could make them more affordable is garnering interest, according to Morgan Stanley. Asian automakers are outsourcing this process which could benefit three leading parts suppliers, according to Morgan Stanley: The investment bank is overweight on Wencan, which it says has taken the lead in this sector. As a result, Morgan Stanley expects the Shanghai-listed buy-rated stock to rise by 18% to 78 Chinese Yuan ($11.5) over the next 12 months. Another Zhejiang-based car parts maker, Tuopu, is expected to "aggressively" expand into unibody manufacturing, the bank said. Morgan Stanley is similarly "equal-weight" on Xusheng , which recently won orders from BYD and has extensive know-how in aluminum casting.
The financial services company should see 20% per-share earnings growth in both 2023 and 2024, according to Deutsche Bank. Deutsche Bank expects its ET5 mid-size sedan to become a top-selling model within six months as supply issues get worked out while demand remains strong. Deutsche's $21 price target implies Nio could rally 97.6% from where it closed Wednesday. The company should see a margin recovery in 2023 as headwinds related inflation and supply chain ease, Deutsche Bank said. Deutsche's price target of $266 implies the stock should gain a relatively modest 1.6% over the next 12 months.

With the ET5 now available, Nio is working to increase production and shorten customer waiting times, Li said. Nio said that investors should expect it to deliver 43,000 and 48,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter, generating total revenue between RMB17,368 million ($2.4 billion) and RMB19,225 million ($2.7 billion).
China's Nio resumes production at its two Hefei factories

[1/4] A Nio ES8 electric SUV changing its battery is seen inside a power station at a JAC Motors-NIO plant in Hefei, Anhui province, China December 14, 2018. REUTERS/Yilei SunBEIJING, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio (9866.HK) said on Thursday it has resumed production at its two factories in the eastern city of Hefei, after COVID-19 curbs disrupted operations and delayed deliveries. "Production is resumed at the moment," said a company representative, declining to say whether it was a full or partial resumption. Nio said on Wednesday it had suspended production because of COVID curbs, leading to delays in deliveries when sales are booming, triggering a steep drop in its shares. Nio sold 10,059 cars last month, nearly three times its sales from October 2021, after introducing new models such as ET5.
Chinese Nio electric car is seen at Nio's first European plant and power swap station in Biatorbagy, Hungary, September 16, 2022. Prices range from around 50,000-70,000 euros ($49,000-$69,000), depending on the car's range and whether customers buy or rent the battery. Nio will stick to direct sales in existing markets in part due to less attractive taxation on subscription models in Norway and restrictions around licence plates in China, Li said. "The advantage of our business separating the car from the battery is that we may reach economies of scale for the batteries faster than the cars," Li said. "In the long-run we believe any top company in the automotive industry will soon have in-house battery production," Li said.
Nio’s battery swap stations also promise to send drivers out with a new, fully-charged battery in just a few minutes, faster than current charging alternatives. In China, Nio set up a company with partners including battery giant CATL to buy the battery packs for leasing and then collect subscription fees from Nio users. Over the past year, Nio has been experimenting with battery leasing and swapping in Norway for its ES8, an electric-drive SUV. The company has sold 800 of the SUVs and installed two swapping stations in Norway, executives said. Nearly all the buyers in Norway and more than half in China have opted for battery leasing, said Shen Fei, Nio's vice-president for power management.
