Press a button on the steering wheel rim and the lights turn turquoise blue. Then you no longer have to hold the steering wheel or watch the road. (Mercedes declined to say how many German drivers have purchased Drive Pilot, though, so it’s unclear how impressive that really is.) Drive Pilot responded the way many automated driving systems do in these sorts of situations. I had assumed that, when I turned Drive Pilot off, it would return to that semi-autonomous mode.

Drive Pilot can take over in traffic jams, letting you kick back, watch a movie, or read a book. Drive Pilot will be available in the electric EQS, shown here, as well as the gas-powered S-Class sedan. Over time, Mercedes plans to teach Drive Pilot to function in more places and at higher speeds. One lidar sensor actually helps Drive Pilot see in 3D, the other is just for symmetry. For people subjected to that sort of treatment daily — or, tragically, twice a day — Drive Pilot could be a game changer.

Ola Kaellenius's comments come as Mercedes-Benz disclosed more details about its newest electric vehicle architecture, the CLA compact electric sedan, which will launch next year and target 30% to 35% more driving range. "The variable costs for an electric car are higher. It will remain that way for the foreseeable future," Kaellenius told journalists at the IAA car show in Munich, adding higher costs could not be passed on to customers on a like for like basis. Variable costs weighing on the price tag of EV production include raw materials for batteries, software development, and electricity prices. Batteries for the CLA will be produced by key supplier CATL (300750.SZ) and ACC, in which Mercedes owns a third.

While charging and fueling trucks cost the same, other cars and their electric counterparts differ. It's not yet cheaper to charge some electric cars than to fuel them with gas, a new study suggests. It's not yet cheaper to charge many electric cars than it would be to fuel their gas-powered counterparts up with gas, a new study indicates. Trucks cost about the same to fuel and charge, while entry and midlevel cars and SUVs cost more to charge at home and in public than they do to fuel at a gas station, the group found. Luxury-segment EVs may cost less to charge at home than their gas counterparts would cost to fuel.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles on Thursday approved Mercedes-Benz 's automated driving system on designated highways under certain conditions without the active control of a driver. But the German carmaker beat Tesla to become the first carmaker to receive authorization to sell or lease cars with an automated driving system to the public in California. The 'DRIVE PILOT' system can only operate on highways during daylight at speeds not exceeding 40 miles per hour, the DMV said. Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz also received an approval to deploy advanced automated driving systems on Nevada's roads.

Austin Evans said he decided to sell his Tesla Model Y over a variety of small build defects. Evans replaced the Tesla with a Mercedes EQS, which he said feels like a private jet. Tech YouTuber Austin Evans sold his family's 2021 Tesla Model Y because he was fed up with a myriad of quality concerns. In the video, Evans also provided a sneak peek at his new family car, a Mercedes EQS SUV. Evans is one of many Tesla owners to describe quality control issues with the EVs, including issues with panel alignment on the car, paint jobs, and leaks in the cabin.
Production ramped up slowly, but by 2017, Tesla was selling more than 100,000 a year of the Model S and its SUV sibling, the Model X. Similarly, pricing for the Model X SUV starts at about $98,000 but the smaller Model Y starts at just $47,000. Still, much like the S-class for Mercedes-Benz, the Model S remains Tesla’s flagship model, representing the brand. In fact, within its competitive class, the Tesla Model S and X are good sellers. By this point in their long lives, the Tesla Model S and X have become a stream of fairly steady profits, said Cox.

Its Drive Pilot feature allows drivers to not pay attention to the road in certain situations. Drive Pilot is a "really big deal," Bryant Walker-Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina who specializes in autonomous vehicles, told Insider. There are some caveats: When Drive Pilot hits roads later in 2023, it will only work on certain freeways in Nevada and only at speeds under 40 mph. Still, Drive Pilot isn't sparking a revolution in the way people drive — or don't — just yet.
