Carter Smith/Bloomberg NewsSYDNEY—U.S. investment firm EIG Global Energy Partners is closing in on a deal for a liquefied natural gas asset worth several billion dollars, as it raises bets on demand for the fuel amid a reordering of energy supply chains triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Chief Executive R. Blair Thomas said EIG’s MidOcean Energy unit is working on the deal in parallel with an effort to buy Australia’s Origin Energy as part of a consortium led by Brookfield Asset Management. MidOcean would acquire Origin’s 27.5% stake in the Australia Pacific LNG project in eastern Australia if the consortium’s nearly $11 billion offer for the company is successful.

“I fell in love very quickly," said Emerson, host and producer of the University of Texas podcast “Lady Bird.” “She kept surprising me." The podcast, which was released earlier this year, is among several recent projects using Johnson's own lyrical voice to offer a new look at the first lady who died in 2007. Other projects include a documentary titled “The Lady Bird Diaries” that premieres Monday on Hulu and an exhibit in Austin at the presidential library for her husband, Lyndon B. Johnson, who died in 1973. Lady Bird Johnson began recording an audio diary in the tumultuous days after her husband became president following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Among events the documentary recounts is Johnson’s tour of the South aboard a train named the “Lady Bird Special” before the 1964 election.

What It’s Like to Write an MLK Jr. Biography
  + stars: | 2023-06-16 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Jonathan Eig’s book “King: A Life” is the first comprehensive biography in decades of Martin Luther King Jr., drawing on reams of interviews and newly uncovered archival materials to paint a fuller picture of the civil rights leader than we have received before. “This is a very human, and quite humane, portrait,” our critic Dwight Garner wrote in his review. “I was a newspaper reporter for a long, long time — and you know, working on daily stories, if you got five days to work on a story, it was a luxury. It took me two years to find, even though I knew it was out there, this unpublished autobiography that Martin Luther King’s father wrote. So stuff like that just gets me really, really pumped up.”We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review’s podcast in general.

Opinion | How to Fix the National Drug Shortage

If a drug manufacturer wants to supply a hospital, nursing home or other institution, it has almost no choice but to go through one of these organizations. The manufacturers pay fees to the group purchasing organization for access to its customers. The fees paid by manufacturers might ordinarily be considered illegal kickbacks under the federal anti-kickback law. That safe harbor sticks in the craw of the group purchasing organizations’ critics. “It’s the biggest scam in America, in my opinion,” Phillip Zweig, the executive director and co-founder of Physicians Against Drug Shortages, told me.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, long a contentious backdrop to the history of civil rights and anti-racist activism in America, is under new scrutiny after the bombshell news that a quote denigrating Malcolm X, published in Playboy and attributed to King, is apparently fraudulent. This new information adds to the ongoing rethinking of the relationship between King and Malcolm X. Of course, this is not to suggest that we stop teaching “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” since all memoir and autobiography is an act of literary creation. The complexity of his relationship to Malcolm X is handled judiciously. Balancing the bitter and beautiful parts of the relationship between King and Malcolm X helps us come to terms with past and contemporary historical traumas.
The New Definitive Biography of Martin Luther King Jr.

KING: A Life, by Jonathan EigGrowing up, he was called Little Mike, after his father, the Baptist minister Michael King. Only in college did he drop his first name and began to introduce himself as Martin Luther King Jr. This was after his father visited Germany and, inspired by accounts of the reform-minded 16th-century friar Martin Luther, adopted his name. King Jr. was born in 1929. One writer, quoted by Jonathan Eig in his supple, penetrating, heartstring-pulling and compulsively readable new biography, “King: A Life,” called it “the richest Negro street in the world.”Eig’s is the first comprehensive biography of King in three decades.
