CNN —Federal agents arrested two Mexican alleged cartel bosses on Thursday, including Joaquin Guzmán López, the son of infamous cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, in one of the biggest victories for US law enforcement in recent years. Zambada is a co-founder of the Sinaloa cartel. He faces charges in the US for conspiracy to import and distribute drugs, along with his brother Joaquín Guzmán López. Gavin Newsom signed a law Saturday to bolster eviction protections for renters and close a loophole in an existing law that has allowed landlords to circumvent the state’s rent cap. The move updates a 2019 landmark law that created rules around evictions and establishing a rent cap at 5% plus the inflation rate, with a 10% maximum. Under the 2019 law, landlords can evict tenants for “at fault” or “no fault” reasons. Renters’ advocates said some landlords have exploited the “no fault” evictions to get around the state’s rent cap. Under the new law, landlords moving into their units or renting to family also must identify the people moving in.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The former mayor of Mexico City will be the dominant ruling party’s presidential candidate, moving the country closer to electing its first ever female president next year. The decision driven by polls of Morena party members means that Claudia Sheinbaum will run as the party’s candidate in the June presidential election. Mexico’s constitution bars outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from a second six-year term. Sheinbaum is a close ally of the popular López Obrador and as Morena’s candidate she will enjoy a distinct advantage in June. López Obrador had said that he would let the party faithful decide its candidate.
