CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The U.S. government and nearly 30 conservative world leaders on Saturday condemned the decision of Venezuela’s highest court to block the presidential candidacy of opposition leader María Corina Machado. “The United States is currently reviewing our Venezuela sanctions policy, based on this development and the recent political targeting of democratic opposition candidates and civil society,” U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement. Machado insisted throughout the campaign that she never received official notification of the ban and said voters, not ruling-party loyalists, were the rightful decision-makers of her candidacy. The ruling came more than three months after Maduro and the U.S.-backed opposition reached a deal to work on basic conditions for a fair election. The deal led Washington to ease some economic sanctions on Venezuela's oil, gas and mining sectors.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Neighborhoods in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state remained flooded Monday more than a day after torrential rains that killed at least 11 people. Some people drowned and were killed in landslides, while at least three died after being electrocuted. Authorities intervened in over 200 incidents due to the flooding across the state, according to a statement from Rio’s civil defense. Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology had warned Thursday of the potential for heavy rain in Rio, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais due to a combination of heat, humidity and areas of low pressure in the atmosphere. BOGOTA, May 16 (Reuters) - Deforestation in Colombia during 2022 is forecast to have fallen by up to 10% versus the previous year, Environment Minister Susana Muhamad said on Tuesday, citing significant decreases in the country's Amazon. Deforestation in Colombia in 2021 rose 1.5% versus the previous year to 1,741 square kilometers (430,218 acres), representing an area twice the size of New York City. A 10% decrease in deforestation would take the total area of forest destroyed during 2022 in Colombia to below the 1,589 square kilometers registered in 2019, the first full year of the administration of former President Ivan Duque. Between 2001 and 2021, more than 31,000 square kilometers of forest were destroyed in Colombia, of which some 18,600 square kilometers were deforested in the country's Amazon. Colombia's government will publish full deforestation figures for 2022 in June, Muhamad said.

Peste 19 protestari au decedat şi alte câteva sute au fost grav rănite, în urma protestelor ce au avut loc în ultimele zile în Columbia. Protestele au început acum mai bine de o săptămână în Bogota pentru a se opune reformei fiscale, propuse de către Guvernul lui Iván Duque. Cea mai afectată zonă a fost regiunea Cali, acolo unde s-au înregistrat şi cele mai multe decese. Uniunea Europeanu, ONU, dar şi diferite organizaţii non-guvernamentale au reacţionat în ceea ce priveşte criza columbiană şi au criticat aspru modul în care poliţia s-a comportat cu protestatarii. Născută în orașul Barranquilla din departamentul Atlántico, cântăreața columbiană a reacționat după tragediile din țara sa natală.

Zeci de oameni au fost răniţi în Columbia în cursul unor ample proteste împotriva reformei fiscale care au dus la ciocniri cu forţele de ordine, în mai multe oraşe din ţară, relatează agerpres. Cel puţin 42 de poliţişti au fost răniţi în violenţe, a afirmat ministrul columbian de interne Daniel Palacios. În capitala Bogota şi la Cali, autoturisme şi autobuze au fost atacate, iar mai multe staţii de autobuz au fost vandalizate. Potrivit ziarului El Tiempo, 50.000 de columbieni au ieşit în stradă în diferite oraşe din statul sud-american. Peste 2.800.000 de infectări şi 72.000 decese au fost raportate în total până acum în statul sud-american cu 50 de milioane de locuitori.

Un primar din Venezuela a început să marcheze cu simboluri de avertizare de culoare roșie casele persoanelor bolnave de COVID-19. „Ne protejăm oamenii”, a spus Luis Duque, primarul din Sucre, Yaracuy, în timp ce prezenta marcajul cu un cerc roșu pe o hârtie albă. Duque a spus că administrația sa îi va amenda pe cei care nu respectă carantina cu echivalentul a 9 dolari, adică salariul minim pe câteva luni din Venezuela hiperinflaționistă. Ministerul informației din Venezuela și Duque nu au comentat pentru Reuters aceste decizii.
