Who Was Harriet Tubman? A Historian Sifts the Clues.

“Where others saw shut doors and unscalable brick walls, she dreamed into being tunnels and ladders,” the historian Tiya Miles writes in “Night Flyer,” a short biography of Tubman that is the first in a new series, called Significations and edited by Henry Louis Gates Jr., about notable Black figures. For decades after her death in 1913, Tubman’s extraordinary life was mostly relegated to books for children and young adults. Thorough, probing biographies by the historians Catherine Clinton and Kate Clifford Larson were published two decades ago. More recently, Tubman was the subject of a Hollywood biopic and “She Came to Slay,” an illustrated volume by the historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar, featuring a drawing of a pistol-toting Tubman on the cover. Perhaps inevitably, all the pop-cultural attention has been double-edged, commemorating Tubman’s formidable accomplishments while also making it harder to discern who she actually was.

The highest court in sports sanctioned Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for doping violations at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The ruling set the stage for U.S. skaters to receive gold medals after they finished second behind Valieva and her teammates in the team competition. When Valieva's case first erupted, the IOC decided not to award medals from the event while the skaters were in Beijing. But what the Valieva case exposed was the fact that, even 10 years after Sochi, things are still not back to "normal” in Russia.

MADRID (AP) — The latest international break is proving costly for several European clubs, including Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both teams will be depleted by the injury absences of important players affected by the “FIFA virus” while on duty with their national teams. Media in Spain and other countries refer to injuries sustained on international duty as the “FIFA virus.” And the injury to Gavi is another example. Camavinga started all four of Madrid’s Champions League games and appeared in all 13 of its Spanish league matches this season. FIFA approved its insurance program for clubs when Bayern Munich official Karl-Heinz Rummenigge complained after Arjen Robben got injured with the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Both men are patients at Penn Memory Center in Philadelphia, which began this mentorship program for caregivers in September. Dr. Dunbar, a nurse-practitioner who lives in Wallingford, Pa., is younger, at 61, but has coped with caregiving for far longer: Her husband, Jeffrey Draine, 60, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2017. Philip Sadtler, 80, received his diagnosis just two years ago, so his wife has long lists of questions about what lies ahead. How can she handle the guilt of leaving him at home sometimes while she volunteers or sees friends? How long can the couple, who live in Berwyn, Pa., continue traveling to California to visit their daughter and her family?

But for Marks, winning the world title was the culmination of years of hard work, a goal that had formed in her mind even before she became the youngest surfer to qualify for the Championship Tour aged 15. Cromwell’s rule plays an important formal role in Bayesian statistics but it is important for any exercise in prediction and analysis. SOFT LANDING CONDITIONSI have written elsewhere the global economy is on course for a significant mid-cycle slowdown if not a cycle-ending recession. Multiple conditions would need to be satisfied, and none violated, for a soft landing to occur. The soft landing scenario is so tricky to pull off and therefore so improbable it has been called “immaculate disinflation” by some forecasters. Nevertheless, the probability of a soft landing is far from zero.
A video showed a fighter jet crash landing at a military base in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday. The pilot was forced to eject from the F-35B aircraft after it spun out of control. The plane was landing at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth on Thursday when things went wrong. The aircraft, however, was being flown by a "US government pilot" at the time of the crash, he said. The next year, a Japanese F-35A crashed into the sea; however, the crash was attributed to pilot error.
Business groups have urged courts to find that the natural disaster exemption extends to the pandemic because employers had no choice but to lay off workers when state and local governments forced businesses to close. Nor did lawyers for three former employees of the company who had sued over pandemic-related layoffs. A federal judge in Houston had denied the plaintiffs' motion for summary judgment, saying COVID-19 qualified as a natural disaster because it was not caused by humans and had infected millions of people. The court said Congress could have included terms such as "disease, pandemic or virus" in the WARN Act, and their absence suggested they were deliberately excluded. The case is U.S. Well Services Inc v. Easom, U.S. Supreme Court, No.
