The Supreme Court is considering a section of federal law that bars an individual subject to a domestic violence restraining order from possessing a firearm. But then the Supreme Court issued its Second Amendment decision in Bruen. The 6-3 Bruen decision broke along familiar conservative-liberal ideological lines. But Justice Brett Kavanaugh, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts, wrote separately to stress that the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. The Second Amendment is “neither a regulatory straitjacket nor a regulatory blank check,” Kavanaugh said.

Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter’s murder. The office told the Associated Press it was not immediately clear whether van der Sloot could face murder charges there. Joran van der Sloot (center) is transferred in a police car from the Ancon I jail in Lima, Peru, on June 8. She was last seen leaving a nightclub with van der Sloot and two other men. In court on Wednesday, Manasco said she considered van der Sloot’s “brutal murder of Natalee Holloway” in her decision to accept the plea agreement.

FILE PHOTO: The Silicon Valley Bank headquarters seen from the street in Santa Clara, California, U.S. March 13, 2023. The bank’s parent company, SVB Financial Group, entered bankruptcy on March 17. The Fed’s report concluded that SVB did not adequately hedge against risk, failed its own liquidity stress tests, and chased short-term profits at the expense of long-term stability. Rather than address these risks, the bank changed how it measured them, the report found. “I see this (Fed) report as being extraordinarily useful evidence to dangle in front of a judge or jury on class action lawsuits against accounting firms,” Cox said.
The Justice Department’s April 20 letter includes guidance for state and local police, prosecutors, judges and probation officers. Joanna Weiss, co-director of the Fines and Fees Justice Center, told me that the DOJ's voice is critical on these issues. The earlier memo included a section that laid out the principle that courts must not use bail practices that incarcerate people solely because they can’t afford a fee. The Justice Department didn't address my specific questions about why the section on bail was nixed. Lauren Jones, legal director at the National Center for Access to Justice, told me that there's clear overlap between cash bail practices and justice system fees.
"It's a pretty simple deception," said Shane Stansbury, a professor at Duke University School of Law and former Manhattan federal prosecutor. The debate matters to cryptocurrency companies because it could determine which agency regulates the trading of digital assets. Both have pleaded not guilty and argued the charges should be dismissed because insider trading charges must involve securities or commodities. In bringing wire fraud charges in both cases, prosecutors avoided taking a position on how cryptocurrencies or NFTs should be classified. It is unlikely Bankman-Fried's lawyers will attempt a similar argument because the wire fraud charges are more straightforward, Kasten said.
(Reuters) - The shooting death of teenager Michael Brown by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer prompted the U.S. Justice Department's most significant investigation of policing practices since the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement. The DOJ also pointed out that “police departments in surrounding municipalities and the County” have practices similar to Ferguson, although that issue was “beyond the scope” of the investigation. In fact, federal officials even considered opening another investigation of the St. Louis police department for similar problems, Reuters reported in October 2020. Ferguson officials expressed concerns that the reforms required to stop exploitative policing in their city would “cripple city finances,” Reuters reported in March 2016. (A measure to institute a modest property tax increase to fund the reforms didn't get the required two-thirds majority vote.)
