CNN —Uber is shutting down its alcohol delivery app, Drizly, just three years after acquiring it for $1.1 billion. The alcohol delivery service operated as a standalone app, and its marketplace was to be integrated into Uber’s delivery app, Uber Eats. In an effort to ramp up its competitive edge in the delivery business, Uber also purchased another delivery company, Postmates, for $2.65 billion a few months before it acquired Drizly. Uber’s ridesharing business has bounced back in recent quarters, though. In November, Uber reported gross bookings for the third quarter that beat the company’s own expectations.

Lyft's app will now feature ads when a user is booking a ride and during the trip. Its main competitor, Uber, launched video ads on several of its apps back in June. "Lifestyle" is based on locations users "like to visit such as sports games, restaurants, gyms, etc," a spokesperson for Lyft told Insider in an email. All riders will see ads on the app, but they have the option to reject sharing "their behavioral and demographic data," the Lyft spokesperson said. Greenberger told the Journal that Lyft also intends on incorporating video ads on its app before year's end.

Consumers are choosing prosecco over Champagne and opting for cheaper tequila amid economic uncertainty. Still, the Champagne industry is on track to beat its sales record thanks to higher-income drinkers. The premium alcohol business saw a boom in 2021 thanks to traveling and partying finally being back on the table. Sales of Champagne also reached a record high of $5.7 billion in 2021, 14% higher than the pre-pandemic record, Reuters reported. But before you feel too bad for the Champagne industry, don't worry — it's still on track to beat its 2021 sales record, David Chatillon, chairman of the Union of Champagne Houses, told Reuters.
Nick Schrock, creator of orchestration tool Dagster and CEO of Elementl, is moving into a new role. Elementl runs the Dagster tool, an emerging product that competes with Airflow and Prefect. A hot open source project many thought was primed to unseat a data juggernaut is now shifting its leadership as it reckons with increased competition in the race to own a critical piece of data infrastructure. And while there likely remains room for an independent orchestration tool, insiders say it's unclear whether one will be able to substantially challenge Airflow. And there's consistent buzz among insiders over whether Dbt Labs will launch its own proper orchestration product.
This week, Samuel Adams maker Boston Beer debuted Loma Vista Tequila Soda, a ready-to-drink tequila cocktail in both lime and mango flavors. Last year was the 12th consecutive year spirits have taken away market share from beer in the total U.S. alcoholic beverage market, according to a report earlier this year from the Distilled Spirits Council, a national trade organization. The beer category, which includes hard seltzer, accounted for 42% of the U.S. beverage alcohol market in 2021, while spirits accounted for 41%, according to DISCUS. At this trajectory, spirits are pegged to overtake beer in market share in the next few years, even though beer sales have grown. The downward trend of beer market share has also been reflected on the online ordering and alcohol delivery platform Drizly.

REUTERS/Allison DinnerWASHINGTON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - The online liquor market Drizly settled with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over a data breach that exposed information about 2.5 million people, the agency said Monday. Under terms of the settlement, Drizly is required to destroy unnecessary data, restrict what it collects and requires Chief Executive James Rellas to follow certain data security practices. The agency said that the company and Rellas were informed about security problems long before Drizly was hacked and failed to address the problems. Drizly, which offers liquor delivery in more than 30 states, is owned by Uber (UBER.N). "Drizly & Rellas were alerted to security problems 2 years before the breach, yet they failed to act.

In a new proposed settlement, the Federal Trade Commission is seeking to hold a tech CEO accountable to specific security standards, even if he moves to a new company. The FTC claims that despite being alerted to the security concerns two years before the breach, Drizly and Rellas did not do enough to protect their users' information. In a statement, Wilson wrote that naming Rellas will not result in putting "the market on notice that the FTC will use its resources to target lax data security practices." But it later dropped him from the complaint after the company said Zuckerberg would not try to personally buy Within. "We take consumer privacy and security very seriously at Drizly, and are happy to put this 2020 event behind us," a Drizly spokesperson said in a statement.
Uber Ads General Manager Mark Grether said ads should maker users' journeys cheaper. Uber now offers an array of ad formats throughout the Uber and Uber Eats apps, and also on emails, cartops, and in-car tablets. The retail ads on Uber Eats can be bought via a self-service platform; Uber app ads are currently sold directly to advertisers by its sales team, though Uber eventually plans to make those ads purchasable through automation. Uber Ads General Manager Mark Grether said the addition of ads would ultimately make rides cheaper for consumers, though he declined to say by how much. He said marketers have been impressed by Uber Ads average click-through rate, which he said is 3% — above the industry average of around 0.35% for display ads .
It also would create a big player in so-called retail media, one of advertising’s fastest-growing sectors. Kroger and Albertsons entered the retail advertising market in 2015 and 2021, respectively. Kroger and Albertsons don’t break out the ad revenue generated by their Kroger Precision Marketing and Albertsons Media Collective divisions. The merger of Kroger and Albertsons would create a fourth market leader at more than 13% market share, Mr. Lipsman said. For marketers, that would help simplify the retail ad market for consumer-goods brands and other advertisers who currently confront a rapidly increasing number of offerings.
, said in a statement that Drizly is one of the few places where her company can run multimedia ad campaigns. The database allows the company to charge above-market rates for ad placements, according to Mr. Patel. The company also hired Gina Hardy as its first chief customer officer to oversee all marketing operations. Mr. Patel declined to comment on specific growth goals for Drizly, but said the company sees significant potential in its advertising platform, which is independent of its parent company’s Uber Eats ad business. Drizly sales grew 517% from September 2019 to September 2021, according to market-research firm Bloomberg Second Measure.
