Melissa & Doug had a situation. For decades, the American toy brand had leaned heavily on factories in China to make its products — wooden puzzles, stuffed animals, play mats. Melissa & Doug was eager to shift some production to other countries. The Melissa & Doug executive was surprised to see that the plant could make high-quality wooden toys, at prices comparable to those in China. Late last year, Sunlord completed its first batch of products for Melissa & Doug, a modest order of about 10,000 items, and now is cranking out 25,000 per month.

Bill Hayes, an actor and singer whose 2,141 episodes of “Days of Our Lives” over five and a half decades constituted the daytime drama version of an ultramarathon, and whose top-selling 1955 single, “The Ballad of Davy Crockett,” remains seared into the memories of the baby boom generation, died on Jan. 12 at his home in Studio City, Calif. His wife and longtime co-star, Susan Seaforth Hayes, confirmed his death. To soap opera fans, Mr. Hayes was a staple of weekday afternoons from the days of rabbit-ear antennas into the streaming era. He began his tenure on the long-running NBC show in 1970. His character, Doug Williams, was a suave and slippery con artist who, after leaving prison, found himself padding through the maze of the plot twists, double-crosses and big reveals that day after day drew viewers back to the fictional Midwestern town of Salem.

ATLANTA (AP) — When rapper Young Thug goes to trial later this month on gang and racketeering charges, prosecutors will be allowed to use rap lyrics as evidence against him, a judge ruled Thursday. Young Thug, whose given name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, was indicted last year along with more than two dozen others. Young Thug has had enormous success as a rapper and has his own music label, Young Stoner Life. All of the defendants were accused of conspiring to violate the anti-racketeering law, and the indictment includes rap lyrics that prosecutors allege are overt acts “in furtherance of the conspiracy.”“The question is not rap lyrics. The question is gang lyrics,” prosecutor Mike Carlson told the judge during a hearing Wednesday, later adding.

CNN —After his team’s first victory earlier this month, University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders said something remarkable. Are you referring to the S & P index itself, or one of the variations, and which symbol(s)? Thanks, Doug W. There are many exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the S & P 500 . The top three by assets under management, in order from largest to smallest, would be the State Street Global Advisors' SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) , BlackRock's iShares Core S & P 500 ETF (IVV) , and the Vanguard S & P 500 ETF (VOO) . As mentioned in the question, there are lots of ETFs that track the S & P 500, so by no means are these three the only games in town. Volume usually does pick up outside of normal trading hours when an event takes place, such as an earnings release.

The Deep-Water Horizon oil spill, severe pollution in the Niger Delta and Amazon deforestation, could be examples of ecocide, said Jojo Mehta, co-founder and executive director of Stop Ecocide International. A number of others have debated doing the same, including Brazil, Canada, Kenya, the Maldives and the UK, according to Stop Ecocide International. “It is not a question of whether ecocide will become part of international criminal law, it’s only a question of when,” Sands said. A working group, including Thunberg, has also been established to draw attention to the environmental impact of war. If ecocide were an international crime, it could give the process more authority, some experts say.

CNN —Stone-faced and walking, it was an unusually muted reaction from a golfer who had just shot the first hole-in-one of his PGA Tour career and the 51st in US Open history. Then Matt Fitzpatrick, the defending champion, realized and quickly made up for lost time. Having started from the 10th hole, Fitzpatrick shot five consecutive pars before arriving at the adjusted 115-yard 15th hole. “As soon as I hit it I thought that it’s got a good chance of going close,” Fitzpatrick told reporters. The quartet of Doug Weaver, Mark Wiebe, Jerry Pate and Nick Price navigated the 159-yard 6th hole in one swing, and all during the second round.

Oscar Levant, the troubled midcentury musician and wag, often said he’d erased “the fine line between genius and insanity.”He says it again, or a version of it, in “Good Night, Oscar,” the unconvincing biographical fantasia that opened Monday at the Belasco Theater. But on the evidence of the character as written, and especially as impersonated by Sean Hayes in a gloomy if accurate performance, Levant doesn’t erase the line so much as fudge it. Certainly the play, by Doug Wright, fails to make much of a case for the genius part of the joke. Instead, it offers a spray of Levant’s most famous quips, like the one about Elizabeth Taylor: “Always a bride, never a bridesmaid.” And instead of dramatizing how marvelous Levant was, it just says so repeatedly. Mostly it’s just a cry; Levant doesn’t seem brilliant but ill.
Asked by a reporter this week what took so long, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was blunt: "There are probably a variety of reasons - probably none of them good." "The reality is, there's such great talent at that position, Black and white," Goodell said at his annual state-of-the-league media briefing. He told the New York Times that year that Black quarterbacks had not "been given the opportunity and the patience" their white counterparts had. "I never felt it was thing where people said it was harder to win with Black quarterbacks, it was more about durability. 'A PROUD MOMENT'At Super Bowl 57, Hurts will be only the eighth Black quarterback to start the title game.
Now, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will be the first Black QBs to face off in a Super Bowl. Hurts aims to become the fourth Black QB to win the Super Bowl, joining Williams, Mahomes and Russell Wilson. Steve McNair, Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Wilson also started in the Super Bowl and lost. “I don’t think we have any cigars, but we’ll be ready to go at the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said, poking fun at Joe Burrow’s penchant for puffing those after big wins. Whether it’s Hurts or Mahomes, it’s another victory for the Black QBs who were overlooked throughout the years.

New York CNN Business —Billionaire investor Leon Black has been sued by a woman alleging he “brutal[ly]” raped her at Jeffrey Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse in spring 2002. Wigdor filed Pierson’s complaint Monday under New York’s Adult Survivors Act. The firm’s Doug Wigdor helped advocate for the new law, which was passed in May and went into effect last week. After that he called again and asked to see her, according to the complaint, but Pierson refused to see him again. In 2008, Epstein pled guilty in Florida to two felony offenses: procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution and solicitation of prostitution.
WILMINGTON, Del, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Adult sexual abuse victims in New York will get an opportunity to sue over decades-old allegations beginning Thursday when a law revives a range of cases including ones against hospitals, Wall Street banks and former U.S. President Donald Trump. New York's Adult Survivors Act creates a one-year period when victims can file lawsuits that otherwise would have been barred because the case was too old. It was modeled on the state's Child Victims Act that revived old claims over child sex abuse and led to thousands of lawsuits against schools, churches and youth organizations. The number of adult cases is likely to be lower than cases involving children, said Jeff Herman, an attorney who represents victims of sexual abuse. One challenge for adult abuse cases is determining consent, said Herman.
Early last month, members of Amazon's secretive in-house research lab, Grand Challenge, were called into an unexpected video meeting. Weibel announced 3 of the 5 projects Grand Challenge was working on would shut down, effective immediately. When other team employees wanted to collaborate with the team, they needed additional approvals from its leadership. Amazon Glow was among the Grand Challenge projects to be discontinued at the end of this year. Getting support promoting Grand Challenge projects was a challenge too.
Many plaintiffs' firms pay somewhere in between. Despite more law firms increasingly paying their top earners like professional athletes, many law school grads only make between $50,000 and $80,000 a year. Things do appear to be changing as more plaintiffs firms seek to compete with Big Law firm talent. But firms like Edelson that pay as much as Big Law firms are the exception. For more information on how these law firms pay, see our table below:Do you have more information on how plaintiffs' firms pay their lawyers?

Amazon's Grand Challenge division recently shut down three confidential projects, a cost-cutting move that shocked and disappointed members of the secretive moonshots lab, Insider has learned. Two healthcare projects survived the cull. The healthcare projects that survived are a new type of at-home fertility-monitoring device and a therapeutic treatment to protect against antibiotic resistance, these people said. The decision to keep two healthcare projects reflects CEO Andy Jassy's ambition in this field. Glow, a video-calling device that Amazon shut down earlier this month, was also part of the broader Grand Challenge team.
In the 2020 election cycle, retirees gave hundreds of millions of dollars to federal candidates. Crystal Snow, a 60-year-old retired business owner, also donated hundreds of times to Republican groups ahead of the 2020 election, according to federal records. Snow told Insider she donated according to her Christian values and did so exclusively online, including to the likes of Sens. By the 2020 election cycle, retirees accounted for more than $1 in every $5, amounting to more than $378 million. Retirees are responsible for a greater and greater share of large political contributions, federal campaign finance data indicates.
