Online marketplace behemoth eBay said it plans to no longer accept American Express , citing what the company says are "unacceptably high fees" and that customers have other payment options to shop online. It's a notable blow to American Express, whose customers are often the most attractive among merchants and spend the most money per month on their cards. "After careful consideration, eBay has decided to no longer accept American Express globally effective Aug. 17 due to the unacceptably high fees American Express charges for processing credit card transactions," said eBay spokesman Scott Overland, in a statement. Overland said that eBay customers have become aware of new ways to pay for items, making payments more competitive than ever before, and AmEx was no longer a necessary partner for eBay. "We know that the vast majority of eBay customers are willing to use alternative payment options to continue enjoying buying and selling on our marketplace," Overland said.

New Delhi CNN —Narendra Modi has declared victory in India’s election but he’ll need the support of smaller parties to govern, a shock result that could make it harder for him to pass major economic reforms. Experts have highlighted land reform as an example of policies that might now be tougher for Modi to implement. India will need to address those issues if it is to capitalize on the massive rethink underway among companies on supply chains. Despite the surprise electoral setback for Modi’s right-wing, Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), experts say the world’s fastest growing major economy will continue to live up to its billing. The party’s underperformance led to a plunge on India’s stock market, which had its worst day in four years Tuesday.

RFK Jr. may have already peaked in the presidential race

CNN —Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is perhaps the biggest X factor remaining in the presidential race. That’s better than any third-party or independent candidate has polled in an individual survey at this stage in the cycle since Ross Perot in 1996. Biden is likely aware that Kennedy voters tend to skew younger – a demographic that traditionally leans Democratic. Perhaps more concerning for the independent candidate is what’s going on under the hood. He’d previously never had a net negative favorable rating in the double digits.

A gas stock and an e-commerce giant were among the stocks being talked about by analysts on Wednesday. The introduction of 2nm, a new generation of chips that are faster and consume less power than previous chips, should lead demand higher for the global semicap industry, analyst Simon Coles wrote in a note. The analyst said Amazon will continue to see growth ahead, however, as it views the e-commerce giant as a strong AI beneficiary. The company sought to expand abroad by applying for an Irish banking license, which would have given the bank access to the European Union market. AMSTERDAM — Digital bank Starling will not re-apply for a European Union banking license and instead pursue international expansion through its software business, the incoming CEO said, in a diverging approach to overseas growth from some of its rivals. Raman Bhatia outlined the company's international expansion plans on Wednesday, in his first public remarks since his appointment as CEO in March, taking over from founder Anne Boden. Bhatia said that the company has no plans to re-apply for the EU banking license to push into new countries. Instead, international expansion will be driven by Engine, a software platform that Starling sells to other companies, so they can set up their own digital banks.

Meta Meta remains a good investment at its current price, said Adam Coons, portfolio manager at Winthrop Capital Management. In 2025, that revenue growth is set for a 12% increase and earnings growth for 15%. That would put Meta's multiples at 26 times 2024's earnings and 23 times 2025's earnings, according to Coons. Of those seven stocks, Mizuho said its investment rating on Lowe's and PayPal were also above the Street consensus. Mizuho analyst David Bellinger's $280 price target implies that the stock could rally 29% from its Monday closing price. "We view Lowe's as decisively well-positioned as home improvement demand recovers and unleashes outsized, double-digit earnings expansion in the process," the analyst wrote. Similarly, financial technology platform PayPal has risen only about 4% this year, leaving its valuation "compelling" at current prices, according to Mizuho analyst Dan Dolev. AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot explained in a Tuesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer why the drugmaker believes it can almost double revenue by 2030. The pharmaceutical giant also plans to release 20 new drugs by 2030, half of which will treat cancer, Soriot said. The company recently released promising results about several of its cancer drugs at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting, including ones for lung and breast cancers. Soriot said researchers are quickly developing new and promising cancer treatments. He said new cell therapies have the potential to cure patients, and he also pointed to antibody-drug conjugates — which, unlike chemotherapy, aim to target cancer cells while sparing healthy ones.

CNN —Sales of new electric vehicles have started to slow, but the opposite is happening with used EVs. The used car sales website Carvana saw its used EV sales more than double since last year. While increases in used EV sales are huge, they still make up a small portion of overall used vehicle sales. Used EVs still cost more, on average, than used gas-powered vehicles, but they cost a lot less than new EVs. While prices for new EVs average around $63,000, prices for used ones average around $36,000, according to Cars.com.

The fundraising round was led by an undisclosed Southeast Asian sovereign wealth fund and backed by venture capital firms BOND, NewView Capital, and Tribe Capital. That marks a 30% discount to its previous valuation of $2 billion, which the firm notched in 2022 when it last raised external venture capital. Nanu said his company's down round was the result of a broader depression in public market valuations of fintech companies. He noted the example of Stripe, which raised a $95 billion valuation in the heady days of 2021 before slashing its value to $50 billion and then boosting its valuation to $65 billion in secondary share transactions. "Banks have gone from, crypto is hot, to not crypto, to crypto," he added.

Mike Blake | ReutersSince 2019, immigration has added 2 million workers to the U.S. labor supply, according to an April analysis by Tedeschi. Without immigrants, Tedeschi estimated that the size of the U.S. labor supply would have shrunk by 1.2 million during that period. The short answer is that this executive order will probably not increase inflation. Some experts say the executive order could bring down costs by smoothing out the U.S.-Mexico supply chain. Biden's executive order could help clear some of these supply chain bottlenecks.

DETROIT – Ford Motor's U.S. new vehicle sales rose 11.2% last month compared with May of last year, boosted by strong sales growth for all-electric and hybrid models. The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported roughly 65% increases in sales of both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The boost to EV sales is a conundrum for investors. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Ford reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, up 5.6% compared with the same time period in 2023.

The scary secret behind the boom in data centers
  + stars: | 2024-06-04 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +10 min
Last year all the data centers in the world had room for 10.1 zettabytes of information — roughly 456 billion Wikipedias. And with the rise of artificial intelligence, which requires vast quantities of data and power, the global capacity of data centers is expected to double by 2027. Data centers are more than just vast digital warehouses. The more data centers those companies have, the more of those services they can offer, and the more storage and number-crunching capacity they can provide. Over time, economists warn, AI startups will inevitably lose out to the tech giants that control the data centers.

Major League Baseball permanently banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano on Tuesday for placing hundreds of bets on baseball, including wagers on the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was a member of the team last season. MLB’s Department of Investigations found Marcano placed 387 baseball bets, including 231 MLB-related bets, through a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023, the league said. The Department of Investigations found all four players placed MLB-related bets while in the minors. MLB said a legal sports betting operator informed the league in March that it had “identified past baseball betting activity” from accounts connected to multiple players.
