Read previewLawyers in the Donald Trump hush-money trial spent Tuesday afternoon in a spirited battle over this question: what will the judge tell jurors right before they begin their deliberations next week? The jury charge is so important, so sacrosanct, that Merchan will order the doors to his courtroom sealed for its duration, with no one in the well or audience allowed to enter or leave. AdvertisementThe jury charge for this single felony should be easy, right? But it's not the only law jurors must understand and weigh when they begin deliberations as early as Wednesday. Or can some jurors find that Trump conspired to violate tax law, while other jurors see the falsification of National Enquirer business records as the central offense?

Betye Saar Remains Guided by the Spirit

The American assemblage artist Betye Saar spent her childhood salvaging lost, discarded and forgotten things, like small glass beads, broken necklaces and scraps of colored paper left in trash bins or littering the ground where she walked. “My daughter Tracye calls me a hoarder who found her calling,” Saar says. Some of the objects that Saar collects have sat unused in her converted-garage studio for years before finding their way into one of her artworks. Saar considers this selection process to be a sacred one. “I’ve always felt that old objects hold a power,” she says.

These robust gains come after a lackluster year for energy stocks. The energy sector fell roughly 5% in 2023, underperforming the broader S&P 500’s double-digit gains as concerns about the global economy hurt energy demand. Some investors say that energy stocks are poised for more gains, given the continued geopolitical turmoil and the US economy’s resilience. Energy stocks often do well when the economy is strong, since there’s more energy demand to fuel goods- and services production. Plug Power shares have slipped 34% this year, SolarEdge Technologies shares have tumbled 25% and Enphase Energy shares have slid 8%.

Could Trump’s Properties Really Be Seized?
  + stars: | 2024-03-24 | by ( Rukmini Callimachi | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Rejected by more than two dozen bond companies, Donald J. Trump has so far been unable to come up with the nearly half-a-billion dollar penalty owed by Monday in his civil fraud trial. Just days before the deadline, the former president’s social media company completed a merger — a move that is poised to pump an estimated $3 billion into Mr. Trump’s coffers. That is more than enough to cover the $454 million penalty that he owes to the state of New York, but the merger restricts him from selling his shares for six months, or using them as a collateral against a loan. Unless those rules are waived to allow him to tap the infusion of cash, Mr. Trump faces the possibility that the state’s attorney general will move to freeze some of his bank accounts and attempt to seize his properties in the city where he made his name as a real estate developer. Lawyers specializing in bankruptcies, foreclosures and corporate insolvency warn that getting control over, and trying to liquidate, any of the former president’s flagship properties is an uphill battle.

CNN —After a first intervention for the fashion house’s seismic creative director John Galliano failed, Dior’s then-CEO Sidney Toledano staged a second, more serious one. ETImage “Barbie” is up for eight awards but is only the favorite for best original song. So while the Oscars have traditionally celebrated prestige films, Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster was undeniable, scoring eight Oscar nominations. Billie Eilish’s heart-wringing track “What Was I Made For?” won song of the year at the Grammys, and it is the front-runner in its Oscars category. And in 2003, Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” scored 10 nominations but no trophies. The best potential parallel to “Barbie” may be Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” which was nominated for eight Oscars and walked away with only best song.

The artist Joel Hernandez, 39, first worked with papier-mâché as an 8-year-old, soon after moving from Mexico to rural Indiana. His parents had gone looking for piñatas — a staple of their family celebrations — at local stores but had come up short. Hernandez, now based in San Francisco, is just one of the contemporary craftspeople using papier-mâché in new and provocative ways. And while each has a different approach to the medium, they share an appreciation for its democratic and economic nature. Making papier-mâché, after all, requires nothing more than a few pantry items, some trash and a bit of imagination.
