Britain’s governing Conservative Party was under pressure Tuesday to return more than 10 million pounds to a donor who reportedly said that Diane Abbott, a prominent lawmaker, “should be shot,” and that looking at her made him “want to hate all Black women.”According to an investigation by The Guardian newspaper, Frank Hester, a health care technology entrepreneur, made the comments in 2019, at a meeting held at the offices of his company, The Phoenix Partnership. He has apologized but has not confirmed the Guardian’s account of what he said. Mr. Hester said on Monday that he “accepts that he was rude about Diane Abbot in a private meeting several years ago but his criticism had nothing to do with her gender nor color of skin,” in a statement released by his firm that misspelled her last name. The statement added that he had called Ms. Abbott twice “to try to apologize directly for the hurt he has caused her, and is deeply sorry for his remarks,” and that he wished “to make it clear that he regards racism as a poison which has no place in public life.”

In a statement to Reuters, Abbott said: “This is a very poor fake, either designed to insult the Mission, or attempted to embarrass me, or both. It is completely fake news.”The Palestinian diplomatic mission did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters found no reports, social media posts or other visual content about Abbott making a visit to the mission. There is no evidence Diane Abbott visited the Palestine Mission with a platter of pork as a gift.

British police have previously deployed live facial recognition at a number of large-scale public events, including the recent coronation of King Charles II. In a joint statement published on Friday, lawmakers from across the political spectrum said: "We call on UK police and private companies to immediately stop using live facial recognition for public surveillance." Signatories included veteran Conservative MP David Davis, Labour politicians Diane Abbott and John McDonnell, and Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey. "There must be an urgent stop to live facial recognition, parliamentary scrutiny, and a much wider democratic debate before we introduce such privacy-altering technology to British life."

There is also no evidence the alleged tweet in the screenshot exists, nor that it was posted and then later deleted. For example, her legitimate tweet about the alleged rape at the hotel was covered here, here and here. Diane Abbott told Reuters she did not post the follow-up tweet from the screenshot and there is no evidence it ever existed.
