As the cruise ship approached New York on Saturday, it was found to be carrying a grim, and unexpected, catch: The corpse of a 44-foot-long endangered whale, draped across its bow. The whale, which marine authorities described as a sei whale, is known for its rapid swimming and preference for deep waters, far from the coast. Its body was discovered as the ship neared the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and the authorities were “immediately notified,” said MSC Cruises, which owns the ship. “We will continue to evaluate and update our procedures with our partners and the authorities,” she said. Marine authorities said that they had towed the animal, estimated to weigh some 50,000 pounds, from the bow, and transferred it by boat to a beach in Sandy Hook, N.J., where they conducted a necropsy on Tuesday.

Gino DiGiovanni Jr., a member of the local board of aldermen, beat Mayor Richard Dziekan by just 10 votes — 202 to 192 — which triggered an automatic recount, set for noon on Friday. The rise of Mr. DiGiovanni, 42, has astonished leaders in Connecticut, where 59 percent of voters cast their ballots for Joseph R. Biden Jr. in 2020. His win is also notable for Derby, an old mill city of just over 12,000 people. The presidential race was close: Mr. Biden beat Donald J. Trump in Derby by four points. So was the 2021 race for mayor: Mr. Dziekan beat his Democratic opponent by just 48 votes.

DERBY, Conn. (AP) — A Republican primary between the incumbent mayor of Connecticut’s smallest city and an alderman facing criminal charges that he entered the U.S. Capitol with a mob of rioters appeared Tuesday to be headed for a recount. Final unofficial results showed a tight contest in the race in Derby, a city of 12,400 people about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of New York City. Races decided by less than 20 votes trigger an automatic recount. Town Clerk Marc J. Garofalo said on Facebook a recount in this race will likely be held Friday. Regardless of the final Republican primary results, Dziekan has said he will appear on the November ballot as a non-affiliated candidate.

CNN Business —The cost of a New York City taxi ride is expected to increase by nearly 23% by the end of 2022, marking the first taxi fare increase in a decade, according to a unanimous vote held Tuesday by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. Additionally, the base rate for New York City cabs is expected to rise from $2.50 to $3.00, while rush hour surcharges will increase from $1 to $2.50. Gross income of TLC drivers is projected to increase by 33% due to the newly approved fare increases, which are expected to go into effect shortly before the end of this year. “Raising taxi fare rates and minimum pay for high-volume drivers is the right thing to do for our city. “I think part of it and part of our idea with increasing the taxi fare is that the financial compensation just isn’t there.
WASHINGTON — An elected official in Connecticut has admitted for the first time publicly that he entered the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot. "I was there I went inside there, and, you know, I didn’t damage or break anything," DiGiovanni told NBC Connecticut following a recent Board of Aldermen meeting. That footage also indicated he entered the Capitol near where some of the most brutal violence took place. Nearly 900 people have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 attack, but there are still hundreds more arrests expected. DiGiovanni was elected to local office in Derby, a small city near New Haven, about 10 months after the Jan. 6 attack.
